Fallout 76, Hitman 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Battlefield 5: What do these games have in common? Besides being AAA 3rd party games, they all FLOPPED in terms of sales and are now discounted. What went wrong with these 4 huge titles, and what does it say about BIG third party games going forward? Let's talk!

It might have been best for game developers to stick with AMD because those games were fantastic even if AMD didn't fill their stomachs with money. Now, with RTX tie-up they filled up their stomachs with money just one time and games flopped because RTX drivers aren't 100% perfect, Ray tracing effects are too much and looks artificial.

I like it a lot. But there are a lot of people who think it's meh.
I left a few notes what I think about it in the "what are you playing" thread. Basically it's more exploration less shooting this time.

    Graphics wise its great.
Story wise it's all over the place and given it's last in the series, it should have finished on a more definitive message.
IMHO, I cannot recognize Jonah in SOTTR, he is not Jonah from rise and original.

The modelling of uranutu and other characters like Rourke also seemed rushed.
    YMMV.

What's the deal with Bethesda/ Fallout '76 right now?

What's the overall story? Are they getting Reddit EA'd? What else did they do wrong apart from the bag thing?"

In more detail, from professional reviewers, buyer reviews, footage and testing, a multitude of bad design choices, crippling bugs and even bad collectors items (possibly false advertising) are named.
    Bugs:
    • Massive damage bug where dropping an enemy (including PVP) causes their health to instantly reverse, thus you drop them to 0 health and then after that your shots heal them in reverse, until they're back to 100%, then it bounces back. You can see this in the AngryJoe review often
    • Final boss, a retooled Skyrim dragon with comically bad AI, randomly disappears, animations glitch and a lot of letdown
    • Finale involves dropping nukes, using more than 1 causes server crashes
    • Random disconnects and server problems
    • Awful framerate and lag issues, and movement tied to framerate (confirmed by another redditor, thanks)
    • The main cookie-cutter enemies like Ghouls randomly stop animating and T-pose and slide around, but can still damage you
    • Enemies that become invincible in doorways (and stop moving/working) can trap players in buildings
    • Base materials randomly vanishing
    • Invisible walls appearing, sometimes appearing around you in multiple angles trapping you in place
    • Falling through the map, objects not being solid, objects becoming uninteractable (including quest objects)
    • Quests failing
    • All sorts of exploits for getting endless XP or infinite items are being found already. Who knows how many total there are
    • Enemies trap themselves in buildings often especially if they "pop in" there. Great way to kill boss creatures granted they don't bug out and become invincible
    • Hit detection problems, mainly because of the archaic PS2-era engine
    • Enemies pop up in front of you at random sometimes, different than just the graphical popup that happens in games (and especially this one), but the actual enemy doesn't exist until you're near it
    • AI considered the worst of Gamebryo releases, which is saying a lot
    • The VATS system is now real-time, and accuracy glitches around often dropping to 0 then 95% then 0
    • A crippling stuck-character bug that effected NPCs (at settlements) from Fallout 4 that was never fixed is just ported. I don't know how it effects this game though, haven't seen footage.
I'm forgetting some I know, these are just the ones I remember right now

Graphics and the infamous Gamebryo engine:
    • Gamebryo engine from the PS2 era used, graphics are some of the worst AAA of this generation in terms of just pure rendering. Putting it next to the DICE Frostbite engine for example of the recent Battlefield V even on consoles shows almost a generational discrepancy in power and efficiency
    • Visual filter effects are both overdone and bugged. A bloom effect is smeared across lit areas, mimicking the visual effects of a type of eye disease. "God rays" from the sun go through the ground and you can see sunset/sunrise rays through mountains. Backgrounds are blurred heavily, possibly to hide badly programmed LoD declines and pop-in
    • Pop-in is extremely bad
    • FOV is fixed on one value, which pisses off people who want it different. Can be changed by modifying files in the directory if you follow a guide.
    • Textures may only half-load or randomly start de-loading, remaining blurry until popping-in. Common thing in poorly-made games, but in this game it can actually happen in a place that's long since been loaded, not just in scene changes
    • Lots of asset flipping from FO4. Arguably it makes sense that a rock here would look like a rock there, but some reviewers have noted how cheap it is and also the claimed massive improvements of graphics is the most questionable here as these items can be compared to their copies in FO4
    • Animations are prone to twitching and glitching but even when they just work, they're far inferior and more fake looking than other AAA games like Red Dead 2, Battlefields and God of War etc.
    • Framerate and stuttering despite the relatively low texture quality and polygon counts, indicating bad optimization
    Design and Story:
    • Huge lack of real NPC-based story or living world of people, because of apparent engine limitations one programmer noted. Apparently the engine is too weak to process both "lots" of NPCs (by Bethesda standards) and multiplayer PCs at the same time. The main "NPC" characters are robot terminals
    • End game "nuke codes" can just be found on Reddit, which helps as the game is so buggy they can vanish in game for players anyways.
    • Quests are simplistic, often fetch quests or hunts. One of the things most made fun of and least liked about Fallout 4's quests were the repetitive settlement quests you repeat over and over. Fallout 76 astounded fans by taking those and making them the main quest system of Fallout 76
    • The quests stay the same and don't get more complex or "epic" for higher level players, unlike other RPGs where the fetch-quests and "kill the ants" quests are just at the start
    • The backstory and lore has been retconned and changed, including major dates apparently. The backstory is not compatible with the original Fallouts
    • (Subjective opinion) The flanderization of Fallout's 1950's thematics under Bethesda has only increased with this release, it's the most distant from the atmosphere of the first 2 classics where it was more of a flavouring on top of a semi-gothic Apocalypsepunk aesthetic. It retains the fewest influences of Fallout 1 and 2 in terms of look, sounds, music, art design and cultural feel. This could however be chalked up somewhat in Appalachia being made to feel this way much more than the rest of the wastes
    • Generally considered a poor soundscape and nobody has said positive things about the soundtrack except liking 1 song. The old engine might be to blame, as the other AAA games this generation use modern engines which can do layers of high-fidelity sound with acoustic simulations and geometry
    • PC controls considered the worst of the series, with unusual key binds probably because of poor porting of Console controls to PC. Menus are real time and poor to navigate
    • Voice chat always on, so the heavy breathing of one player, the background lawnmower of of another and side-argument with a wife for another player are heard even when you're supposed to be listening to an "important" holotape recording
    • Microtransactions based on "Atomic" points. Generally the concept of microtransactions that have become so common in gaming is disliked by most gamers. The banal things you can get, such as paint jobs, awful hair styles, blurry tattoos are shockingly pricey.
    • Todd made his usual big promises, including how the graphics would be amazing and improved multiple-fold. He also claimed it was not always-online.
    Collectors gear:
    • Expensive (up to 200 USD) editions come with a bag, T-51 helmet and a map. I don't have one though. The bag was advertised as being made of canvas, directly on the sales page. Reviews have said the bag is poor quality (as noted here) and not even canvas. There have been pictures of the actual flimsy, crinkled nylon bag posted already as proof. Some are thinking of actual lawsuits. Bethesda's twitter told purchasers they can provide proof of a poor-quality bag to get 500 in-game Atomic credits, which is about enough to buy the cheapest in-game cosmetics. An actual in-game postal bag costs 700.
EDIT: Thanks for all the support!

Nah its jsut the usual black friday sales, bit of a sensation topic. Fallout 76 obviously flopped, but BF5? Thats debatable, phsyical sales in the UK are 65% lower but no one knows as of this time if digital & subscription sales have increased. To put it in perspective, RDR2 which is this years biggest title also received huge discounts the past week.

My personal opiniosn regarding HItman 2 and BF5.

Hitman 2 is awesome, very well made game, a little light on map content though (just like 1) but it is well polished, plays great and most of all is great fun.

Battlefield 5 is better than I expected based on the alpha and beta of which I was a part of. Also a tad light on map content but it is very polished as of this time and already have 24 hours of fun in it. It is very immersive especially and truly feels like war.

To be honest based on my analysis I consider it just gaining views. negativity attracts mor eviews and especially youtubers gain from that. Both th enumbers from Yongyea and Dreamcastguy are based on 1 source As I said before, for example the source from Dreamcastguy only talks about the UK, and physical sales only. But physical sales have been on the decline for years. It would be likely that BF5 is selling less than BF1 but there is no credible indication of how much.YongYea his source was also based on one market researcher who has been wrong many times.

'BATTLEFIELD 5' PRICE DROP: SALES AT TARGET AND BEST BUY
BY BOB FEKETE ON 11/27/18 AT 3:06 PM
    https://www.newsweek.com/battlefield-5-price-drop-sale-target-best-buy-1233989

"Battlefield 5 may be a recent release, but if you act fast you’ll be able to buy it at a sharp discount. Best Buy and Target both have sales right now, with copies of Battlefield 5 going for as low at $30.
First up is Best Buy. Battlefield 5 is discounted down to $39.99 for the standard edition on PS4, PC and Xbox One. As an added perk, you also receive a free SteelBook case for PS4 and Xbox One orders. If you have a Gamers Club Unlocked account through Best Buy, your discount stacks on top of the sale, meaning Battlefield 5 drops down to $33.59, and this includes the SteelBook case. Best Buy does offer free shipping, but faster shipping comes with an added price.

Believe it or not, the price drops even lower if you’re buying from Target. Standard editions of Battlefield 5 for PS4 and Xbox One are $29.99 until Thursday. Unfortunately, the PC version of Battlefield 5 is not on sale at Target for some reason. Buying from Target also includes free two-day shipping. Target is not offering the same SteelBook case deal as Best Buy.

Both stores are not offering any discounts on Deluxe editions or digital versions of Battlefield 5. The only items on sale at both Target and Best Buy are physical copies of the standard edition.

If you really wanted the SteelBook case at the lowest price possible, it’s likely you can take Best Buy up on its price match guarantee offer. The company says it will match any prices on products from major retailers, and Target definitely counts as one of those. To take advantage of the price match, call 1-888-BEST-BUY or visit a store location for more assistance.
This price drop is the first major sale for Battlefield 5 since it was released one week ago (not counting all those early access release dates). It isn’t common to see a game this new on sale so fast, so be sure to act quickly if you are interested in either of these deals. It will probably be a few more months until we see Battlefield 5 offered at this price again..."

Both Target and Best Buy standard edition is currently $20 off @ $39.99:

No accounting for taste I guess. :)

I loved it, and I would recommend it to others as a fine example of American Western black humor.

It's not Blazing Saddles humor, the Ballad of Buster Scrugg's has a far finer darker edge.

How would you explain it to someone else? I don't think there is a good way to prepare one for such a series of stories, other than to suggest you try it, you might like it. :D

Of course there are the snippets of the movie on Youtube, trailers, and reviews to save you from the whole shebang in case it's not in your taste. Of course most of it contain spoilers that ruin the whole set up and delivery - pulling segments out of the lead up and sequence - which ruins it for me.

What story did you like, if any?

If you didn't like it, you might not like the other recommendation either - Mystery Science 3000 - it's got a similar sense of silly humor - with a solid base of bad SciFi movies used to hang the humor - so be warned. ;)

I won't put anything about it as it could spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it - but it's what I would certainly call "different"!

I thought you may have recommended it as its on a par with Fallout 76 :p

No, sorry, nothing is as bad as Fallout 76. :D

The meme used to roast the gaming companies was a scene from a story in the movie "Ballad of Buster Scruggs" - the Gallows scene of the Bank Robbery / Cattle Rustling story, that was the connection. Nothing other than it was an enjoyable American dark humor movie that I thought I would share.

Every one of the stories had an element of surprise, joy, tragedy, and contained the strong backbone of "life goes on" that exemplifies life as we think of it lived during the days of the pioneering old West that I found engaging and watchable. It's perhaps an acquired taste.

Do you enjoy Quentin Tarantino movies, like Pulp Fiction, or the Kill Bill series? Very different yet there are similarities in the humor and violence, toned down for Netflix as original content.

If you went in thinking it was a Fallout 76 kind of theme, that's likely why you were disappointed. Sorry about that. I guess I should have made it clear it was a dark Western themed series of stories.

Understood and each to their own I guess. I do enjoy Quentin Tarantino's movies as they often have a shocking twist, and I do see what you mean about the similarities in them to those stories. I thought it was going to be a comedy musical at first...!

Reminded me a bit of the 3 seasons of Fargo but then I suppose it would being the link to the Coen Brothers.

And no, thinking about it, it wasn't as bad as Fallout 76. :D

Yeah, I'm not really a "musicals" guy - even though I can get sucked into them - and I was about to switch shows at first myself, and then I got into the singing - especially the integrating of the horse and wild west scenery into the song, and then the juxtaposition of the "twit" persona vs his obvious talents, other than singing.

With only the first story having that "musical" feeling, if that's how you settled in your expectations for the rest of the stories I can see how one could be disappointed. Each story has it's own theme and setting, differently unique and requires a "reset" each time before you can settle in and enjoy it fully.

Some of it can be "hard to watch" for totally different reasons, so it may take a certain determination to stick with it at times, but I still enjoyed it all.

This trailer doesn't do it justice at all, but it does show some of the characters and settings from the movie, which doesn't at all prepare you for what's in store should you choose to watch it. :)

If you like your Cowboy flicks with an even darker edge, and lots more gruesomeness, then I can heartily recommend "The Hateful Eight" by Quentin Tarantino, also on Netflix:

Right now, it's literally a multiplayer mod for Fallout 4 with far less things to do, and I'm not even joking, that's literally it

There are plenty of people who did play it and rate it poorly.
As for me, after my disappointment with Fallout 4, no way I'm giving my money to Beth for this abomination...

I loved Fallout 4 and was hoping for a Fallout 5, moving the story on in some years and in another new location so there would be a ton of stuff to explore with a whole new load of quests and then expansions/DLC's to continue the story on.

Ok I grant you that FO4 had many flaws, and you had to follow certain frustrating storylines (like not being able to wipe out those damn Minutemen for example), not to mention that tedious DIMA's Memory Puzzle nonsense - but there were a lot of good parts in the game as well. I spent hundreds of hours playing it, making settlements and exploring the many bunkers and then purchasing the expansion packs, following the stories through to their end and getting companions to trust me - although they often kept getting stuck in places and getting me into fights I could have easily avoided solo!

Coming from playing Fallout New Vegas (which I didn't enjoy anyway as near as much), FO4 was like opening up a whole new world to me, and I even upgraded my gaming pc to play it :D

Having to wait all this time for the next installment of the Fallout series, then hearing the news that it was going to be online only, (but you could play it solo, really - why do you have to be online then?), and had PvP and no NPC's and went back in time (WTF?) was really disappointing to hear.

TBH I haven't played it myself, I actually cancelled my pre-order but I do have friends who have (and many of them have asked for a refund) and I've watched many reviews about it and seen a lot of the gameplay and sadly its not for me. Bethesda messed this one up - but if they did change tack and bring out a FO5 I would probably buy it!

So to console myself I'm off to kick my cat (gently) and I'll quote the old saying

"If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck". :p

In my case, my Fallout 4 experience was quite the opposite - boring story, butchered dialogue system and RPG elements, quests even worse than in Ubisoft games... And worst of them all - knowing Obsidian will never work on FO sequel again...
But that's okay, Bethesda will shove "war never changes" quotes and Pip/Vault/Fallout (whichever name it is) boy into player throats without realizing what Fallout really is about...

Now if you will excuse me, I need to calm myself down with some music...

I'm hoping for Fallout 5 too.

RE: Fallout 76 - As soon as they said no NPC's and Open World with no stories - you make your own - I thought it was going to be a "lame" duck, which is certainly how it's turned out - along with the usual Bethesda screw-up's.

It won't even be a good candidate for purchase when the price drops after it's old, as without the servers it's useless. No long term prospects for sales, another genius idea. :)

    Nice songs indeed.

    But Fallout 1/2 soundtrack...
I love traveling through the wasteland, filled with destruction and sadness, seeing what used to be a great civilization, now turned to dust. And although many try to rebuild, and there seems to be hope that one day we might forget the tragedy of the past, and start living and breathing freely again, yet even in these hard times people still try to kill one another... War... War never changes...
And all this to the eerie music of FO1/2...
Holly hell, the game atmosphere just went over 9000!

Yup. JC4 is getting destroyed in the reviews on steam.

A Just Cause game with no grenades, no C4, no pistols, no duel welding, less destruction, and worse graphics than its predecessors just proves that developers on these AAA games are getting lazier and lazier. I bet JC4 will be on sale for 50% off during the winter sale on steam.

    Where do I start?

    1. Fallout76 was a dumpster fire from the beginning. It's one thing to launch a low effort title, and its' another to launch the same in a broken state. Unforgivable.

    2. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider: This is a big, fat middle finger to these who've followed the franchise in the last two releases. ROTTR and Tomb Raider 2013 were excellent, and stuck out to the core mechanics the titles are known for. This half-polished turd that is shadow of the tomb raider is an ambitious failure, in many ways: It introduces nothing new, and at this point, should've been a DLC for ROTTR at best. And the RPG mechanics barely mesh in together. A broken mess that also went on sale shortly after launch, much to the chagrin of pre-orders.

    3. I cannot speak for the rest such as Just Cause 4. I've barely, if at all, played the sequels. However, there are reports that it has questionable performance issues that haven't been fixed (yet).

Lots of good games on steam that I never had time to play. I'm thinking I've got years of gaming stockpiled there without even downloading some old favorites on the cheap and replaying them. I'm way past tired of the corporate mentality involved in making customers things to be used instead of prospective buyers of a product and I've been voting with my wallet. I haven't bought any of these new games or others not mentioned that follow the same practices and I'm not going to; loot boxes, day one dlc, and so on, all non starters. Not getting my money at full price, half price, or any price at all.
