Hi all, been playing Fary Cry 2 yesterday and today, and today i decided to update to the 180.42 drivers for my 8600M GT, from Laptopvideo2go

After installing these drivers, i proceeded to start up the game, only to find it running in windowed mode, and fully blacked out (you can tell it is running though... the sound is still playing and you can hear it changing menu selection etc.) Others have reported these problems too i believe.

So, i Alt-Tabbed out of the game and closed it.

Not thinking much of it i checked the files properties, and tried enabling one of them called, "disable desktop composition"

    And this fixed it!

So, in short here are the instructions for this fix.

    1. Locate shortcut to game, right click and slecet properties.
    2. Navigate to Compatibility tab
    3. Under the Settings heading, check "disable desktop composition"
    4. Run the game!!

Let me know if this works for you!

    Good luck everyone :D

Yeah i see what you mean... no use!

Anyone any ideas why it crashes with this new driver release?

Isnt it supposed to be optimized for far cry 2?

I dont think the 8600M GT is supported w/ 180.42 drivers. On laptopvideo2go this is the list they give:

    GeForce GTX 280
    GeForce GTX 260
    GeForce 9800 GX2
    GeForce 9800 GTX+
    GeForce 9800 GTX
    GeForce 9800 GT
    GeForce 9600 GT
    GeForce 9600 GSO
    GeForce 9500 GT
    GeForce 9500 GS
    GeForce 9400 GT
    GeForce 9400
    GeForce 9300
    GeForce 9200
    GeForce 8800 Ultra
    GeForce 8800 GTX
    GeForce 8800 GTS 512
    GeForce 8800 GTS
    GeForce 8800 GT
    GeForce 8800 GS

And a post taken from the forums:

"This driver did not work on my XPS 1350 with a 8600M GT 512
I extracted the UK beta driver from the Nvidia site from the link then replaced the INF file with the modded one and ran the setup.exe. Once i started to play a game the screen freaked out on me."

Most of the drivers on laptopvideo2go are desktop drivers, that is nothing new. If you look on the nvidia website you'll see very few official drivers for mobile graphics cards.

This driver is optimized for FC 2 on desktop GPUs. If you read the fine print on just about any gamebox, it will tell you that mobile graphics cards may not be supported etc... etc..

So in short, until a better fix comes our way, this may be as good as it gets.

Have you tryied to press Alt+Enter while it's in window mode?
this should make the game back to full screen...

The fix i posted above works for me in this case! It removes windowed mode and blacked out screen.

Is it working for everybody else?

When trying to run the editor it still crashes though...

Im not sure, its hard to say really! Nothing noticeable with me anyway, however i am running the game in DX9 mode, and i think these drivers ae supposed to give a performance boost in DX10.

It is my opinion that if you havent upgraded to the 180.42 drivers yet, it maybe best to stick with the drivers you currently have and ait for something more stable (?) to come out. This is just my opinion anyway guys.

Is everyone getting the game to run ok with the fix in the above?

no, even if you have a desktop 8600 gt it probably won't work because it is only for 8800's and 9 series and 200 series, so nothing below or older than a 8800 is supported by the driver, desktop or laptop.

This is a better fix as you don't have to disable Aero and it works with any instance (i.e. benchmark tool):

    1) Open C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\My Games\Far Cry 2\GamerProfile.xml in Notepad

    2) Replace Maximized="0" with Maximized="1"

    3) Save and exit

This works for me too. I'm on the 8800M GTX and I had the black screen issue while using the 180.42 drivers. I started out with the 177.92 drivers though and those were totally fine.

The 180.42 works fine with me until I change the resolution to my native laptop screen which 1400x900 for my P-6860FX .
Once I change the resolution I get the black screen window .
Anybody suggest to downgrade the driver to something else ?

You might want to revert to an old driver as the disable desktop composition option has worked for many of us. Or try reinstalling FC2?

    Confused, 9600 GSO = 9600 GS?
