Ehh, for what is out and will be coming out, i don't think it's worth it.
    Here's my options on things:
Pro's: Very Good graphics, love the fire. Like the weapons and the vehicals are easy to drive, and you get a good senery to look at while driving
Con's: All misson's are the same for each group, such as all the wepons dealers you just have to blow a convoy up, ect... Annoying AI (they don't like to die, only with machine guns and such, not sinpers)

overall, i dont think it's worth it, Make note this is for the 360. I also didn't buy, but simple let my friend barrow GoW2 for the week, and he let me get this.

from what i've heard, every mission can be boiled down to:

    20min driving/travelling, 2min shooting.

...and that's about it. if you're a graphics fanatic, go for it, the visuals are stunning, but the gameplay isn't quite up to scratch.

played the game on ps3 but still relevant.

game looks great. now that we got that out of the way...

if you like to do the same thing OVER and OVER and OVER again and drive for 5 minutes (real time) to get to a mission, go for it. lol.

    way to open and repetitive.

IMHO ? Not worth buying. Unless you like bad car simulator. :/
Kinda boring driving around and around doing the same missions again and again. And what is most frustrating this brown color of EVERYTHING. Sad and ugly!

I didn't play it, but maybe this will help:

My co-workers and I are all pretty serious gamers. Two of them bought Far Cry 2, and for the next two days, all they talked about was how it was so awesome.
After that, they stopped. I asked what happened, and they said the got bored, it was too repetitive.

ok thanks guys, I reckon I may try the demo when my notebook comes, just to make sure whether I like it or not! I'm not all into repetitiveness, and I'm sure I'm not alone!
Some of you mentioned what's coming out, game wise, can you enlighten me please? I'm a bit out of the upcoming release scene.
    Thanks

you either get an open sandbox type game, where travel is required, or a linear game, where your forced down a set path, and it's always exactly the same.
I guess not everyone can be happy.

This game is pretty fun, but I agree, it does get repetitive after some time. While there are many ways to approach any given situation, and also different elements you can use to get the job done, there really isn't a whole lot new in the game as you progress. the side missions are always the same thing pretty much, and the main missions don't really feel like anything new as you go along. The AI is frustratingly retarded and some things should be fixed, notably the AI's driving tactics.

It seems their main goal is to run you over, and kill you instantly. All too often I'm looking at the scenery, or running across a bridge only to look to my right for no more than 5 seconds to look out at the river, and I'll be randomly run over without ever hearing or seeing a car approaching. AI can also drive almost twice as fast as you can, so you NEVER have a chance at outrunning them, and if you get out of the car to get rid of the people chasing you, you'll probably end up getting run over the second you jump out like I always do. It wouldn't bother me if only getting run over didn't kill you instantly no matter how much health you have. It doesn't really make sense, this guy can take 30 bullets to the chest, but can't survive being hit by a car at 15mph?

To me, it's a good game though, worth $50, but I know alot of people would disagree with that.

About running it on your 9800mGS, I don't know, I've never used one of those cards or anything similar, but I'd guess all max settings in native resolution but with medium shadows for smooth gameplay.

Really the driving is not a huge issue. You drive for maybe 3 minutes to a cool location and play a mission. The driving is just part of the exploring, now suck it up and buy :)

I have to chime in for the affirmative, i.e. it IS worth it side. I haven't played much of it yet, but so far it's interesting me far more, whilst disappointing me far less than the other games I got recently: Crysis Warhead, Dead Space, Red Alert 3 and Civ4: Colonization. Dead Space has simply atrocious controls, and a mouse response that is abysmal no matter what I do. I've recently found a tool that claims to fix that, and I really hope it works. Red Alert 3 needs you to absolutely master the dual ablities of each unit and all the hotkeys to manage building, attacking, scouting, harvesting simultaneously WAY more than C&C3 did. Crysis Warhead is nice, but just doesn't grab me somehow - I think for that game you really do need to have impressive hardware so you can enjoy it by firing up its pretty scenery. And Colonization somehow seems hollow compared to the original, which is quite an achievement. There are actually way fewer possibilities for playing and winning this game than in the original, and as a consequence, instead of playing the game to enjoy playing the game, everything has to be geared towards winning. No game should be exclusively about that.

Now Far Cry 2 is rather astonishingly pretty even on my 8600M GT: 1280x800 all high except shadows and shaders on medium....wow. Africa has this great feel to it that the jungles of Far Cry and Crysis don't. You really feel that you are in this environment so much more than in those former two, and the game I recall most whilst playing Far Cry 2 is GTA San Andreas. There's that sort of do-anything, complete all the side missions if you want to feel.

I may be revising my opinion because of the potentially annoying need to get malaria tablets all the time, as well as this repetition people keep mentioning, but the first 3 hours have been captivating. I'm not one for all-out RPGs like Fallout 3, and I don't ever multiplayer with PC so I'm not into Left 4 Dead. That's a good bunch of games where Far Cry 2 has risen to the top!

Story Line and guns are pretty much Fallout 3. Farcry 2 would be too hardcore for you.

@Arom, its a matter of taste, if you are into FPS games, this game is heaven on earth, if not, and just like some linear shooting, then the game isnt for you, since its way too Open :D

Never trust pro game reviewers, like most movie reviewers. Movie critics don't seem to like movies that people actually find enjoyable (remember all those god-awful depressing movie Oscars last year, when the wonderful Juno got barely one?). Many game reviewers will have only so much info about a title, or they have got some incentive to post a good review, or they simply haven't the time to explore a game for a full review. Pay attention to what people who PLAY the games say - we're the ones shelling out money, so we're less forgiving than reviewers who get to try games with no loss of investment, and we're the ones who will likely be able to fully explore a game, with no limit on how long we can play before forming an opinion.

I don't know what's meant by this. Maybe I'll get disappointed by the game later on when it's all familiar, as I said. But surely your first few hours of a game are going to almost always be the more interesting ones, especially with a game like Far Cry 2 when everything is new and pretty looking.

You get the drivethrough, getting to marvel at the beautiful scenery, the intro to the Jackal, escaping from the first battle. Then you start exploring around for the first time - on foot and in vehicles, finding your first safe house, first buddy(ies), first missions, first diamond briefcases, first look at the day-night system, first kills, first self-healing (pulling shrapnel out of your arm - HAH!). How could that first few hours NOT be a entertaining start? I happened to find those hours great, maybe others less so, but regardless, before you get familiar with everything I don't think it's unusual to find the start of a new game, well, novel enough to be exciting!

I was highly skeptical of the game before playing it. So I bought it used for $15. Now having played it for over a week I must admit I am really liking it. The missions can be a little repetitive but most of the complaints around I find to be petty imo. I am not saying the game is a perfect 10/10 but it is very fun and if I knew then what I know now, I would have paid full price for this game.

    • The open world is fantastic. Boat, drive, run, fly all over the place. The driving controls are good and I love the riverboats.
    • The gunplay and weapons are pretty decent. Lots of it so I hope you like shooting people (in video games ;))!
    • The graphics are fantastic. Rain/wind/sun/night/day, vegetation, landscapes, fire etc... The game world looks amazing and really adds a lot to the immersion. And it runs so well on my mid-range desktop.
    • The story and characters are a bit hit and miss. I actually care about my buddies. Sounds weird but when I accidentaly ran over one I was pissed. Then last night I blew the face off of my best buddy. I was horribly upset so i loaded a previous save point and did the mission over (yup I cheated).
    • Many people complain about the checkpoints and driving around. I am sorry but the driving around is not that bad. It is not nearly as long or tedious as people say (in my experience). And the checkpoints, pffft. It is not very hard to drive up to a check point with a jeep, man the turret and gun everyone down in a few seconds. In addition to hitting some explosives and letting ammo crates take care of some guys. It's kinda fun! Go figure shooting in a shooter is highly prevalent.
    • The AI is fine. Sometimes they can pick me off from behind bushes and what seems like 100s of yards away. That part sucks. But it is not all the time. Other than that they really try to flank you. I have been surrounded a couple times and high-tailed it outta there with only a thread of life left. The drivers are dumb though. They just ram you.

    • There are some annoyances in the game too. Like the map/monocule. It's very difficult to get used too. I am not a fan of how they implemented the monocule at all.
    • The missions can get repetitive, it would've been nice to have a bit more variety I think. But the open world does let you get creative about them, so I am liking that part.

All in all I am giving FC2 a strong 8.9/10 but I have not finished it yet. I previously gave it a slightly lower score but that was a while ago and I am still playing/liking it a lot so it deserves more.

This game doesn't default to a low saturation value like most other new games, like Gears of war. There's sliders in the video options to change the contrast, gamma, and saturation. You can make the game purplish if you so desire, but the game is definitely not "Brown", this game actually happens to be very bright and vivid, which is one of the things I really like about it. If it looks brown to you then either change these settings, or the color settings of your graphics card's control panel.

I think the game is actually pretty fun. The graphics are very nice, especially the vegetation, trees, and fire (although I must say, the water looks quite bland). Regardless, the game is full of driving, which I don't mind, especially since the bus stops cut your travel time down by a lot.

The most annoying thing to me is how you have to pass through all the little villages that have 5 or 6 AI guarding them no matter what mission your on. I normally travel through at least 2 on a mission (and then go through them on your way back), but it's not rare to have to go through more (it's also hard to circumnavigate these places because many are located in tight pathways). Also, the AI respawns fairly quickly. I was looking for my target after taking out a compound, and by the time I found and killed him, the AI were beginning to respawn again (~5 minutes).

Still, the game is fairly fun, but not worth $50. If you can find it cheaper, then go ahead and pick it up, as it isn't a bad game.

EDIT: After playing through more missions and getting farther through the game, I'm really liking it now. I only do the main missions, malaria missions, and weapons missions, and that's more than enough to keep me busy and having fun. I don't find it too repetitive at all. You can develop your own style of fighting (run + gun, snipe, stealth, etc.) and each mission, with its different settings and objectives, definitely make the game much more exciting. I take back what I said about the guard posts, as you get used to them (even the crowded ones). However, the random jeep thing is true, and you always have to be on guard. I've been able to counter this by staying in a car most of the time and periodically checking around me for approaching cars.

Yeach.. I'll play with the settings. Though it does not look like it has wrong settings but rather like it was designed that way. And all screen shots I saw looked the same to me on screen in work and at home...

And spradhan01 has the same feeling about the color so it's not my eyes. At least not mine only. :D

I also found the game repetitive and tedious with all the travelling. I don't feel that they managed to combine an FPS and free roaming properly. The game needs to be tighter.

I really hate the respawning checkpoints and also find that the AI is either extra crap or extremely good which is prety annoying.

Like someone else said, I absolutely HATE getting run over out of NOWHERE !! Im just walking around and looking about and all of a sudden, I hear a jeep revving loudly like 'vvvrrrrrrrrrrhhhh' just behind me, making me **** myself and then I get runover and die. 5% of the time I manage to dodge by jumping behind a car or rock but usually, I die because I don't know which direction its coming from.

i never got ran over with a jeep, completed the game on 2 different difficulties and got rammed only once..

Besides, open FPS are supposed to have long time travels and such.. thank god they gave you vehicles.. People where asking for an open FPS over and over, now that they've got it they;re saying its too open..

I don't really understand some of the complaints. I guess just different opinions, but I never had a problem with the graphics/color scheme. I think the game looks very good and has similarly high performance. I was running on high settings/resolution, some maybe that's the difference.

As for people saying it's repetitive, what did you expect? How is this structurally worse than any other FPS or even any other game period? A corridor shooter seems to me to be fairly repetitive. You do the same thing in RTSs, RPGs, etc. Maybe a game comes along and it's truly unique (and in the minority), but I think this is a lot of over blown criticism.

40+ gameplay hours, good graphics/sound, good AI. If you like FPS, and you have played all subsequent major releases, then you should buy this game.
