Hey everyone, well I'm getting a new laptop, and now I can max out all my PC games! except one... so I was thinking of a getting a single player game when I don't have online, and I can only get one...so my question is which single player game is by far the most impressive on the PC while maxed? most fun? and will keep me entertained for some while?

My vote is for Mass Effect! I had a blast playing that game
This is the order that Gamespot ranks them in:
1. Fallout 3
2. Mass Effect
3. Far Cry 2 -

I'd say Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 is repetitive as hell, although the game's environment is amazing.
-

Fallout 3
Although mass effect is good. -
Mass Effect is a game you just can't go without playing.
-
My personal preference would be:
1. Fallout 3
2. FarCry 2
3. Mass Effect -
Fallout 3. I thought Mass Effect on PC was horrible.
-
-
My vote is also for Mass Effect, but it depends on what kind of game you like best as those three are all rather different.
-
Farcry 2 if you're not a mangina
-
Fallout 3 is absolutely amazing.
(I've heard good things about Mass Effect as well).
However Far Cry 2 is useless... I can't stand the game. That's my own opinion of course and I'm sure others might disagree with me. For me, it was a total waste of money. -

^ Yes, I bought FC2 on STEAM so I can't even sell it!
-
Mass Effect
Fallout 3
Farcry 2
Nice lappy btw -
Fallout 3 The other two are the King and Queen of ultra boring.
-
mass effect no questions asked, the story and the mechanics of the best rpg games combined with the excitement of fps games. and it has great replay value as well, I personally played through the game 4 times. such a good game. fallout3 is really good as well, but it does get lonely and the game feels long and empty (great last man on earth feel)

Mass Effect by a longshot. Everyone I've introduced the game to has basically replayed it almost immediately after beating it the first time. Combat and so on may not seem that good on your first run, but is actually surprisingly deep, especially when you start ramping the difficulty level and are forced to make some real decisions with how you level characters.
Fallout 3's replay value is marred heavily by the level cap and the same skill issue Oblivion had (there are certain skills you more or less HAVE to level/max). My girlfriend doesn't mind it, but the repetitive environments drove me insane, too.
Far Cry 2 I haven't had a chance at yet. Still working on FEAR 2. -

Far Cry 2 Even Dough My Computer Stuttered With It I Though It Was Amazing
Graphics- 9.5/10
Game Play- 9.0/10 -
Your comparing Apple to Oranges here...I have all three, so here's my judgement.
Far Cry 2 is an FPS, Fallout 3 really isn't one, and neither is Mass Effect. If you like guns, and games that let you shoot a lot of things in an African savanna/jungle setting with awesome gun mechanics, then get Far Cry 2. The gun play will make up for the repetitive game play. Fallout 3 is really good because it's a deep RPG/FPS hybrid. However, it's almost impossible to really play as an FPS since the shooting mechanics really suck, so your stuck with using VATS (which isn't a bad thing). The greatest strength of FO3 is the exploration feature, so if your not into exploring creepy, huge random structures then don't get it. The main story line is really short and not the most impressive either. Finally, Mass Effect is an RPG, except is has much more of a 3rd person shooter feel to it. Unlike FO3, you basically have to play the game out as a FPS like game. The gameplay is pretty solid, and while the gun play isn't that great, driving around in the Mako will make up for it. The graphics are also really quite good, with a great space opera background and storyline. I can't say it's as open environment as they advertise it, especially compared to FO3...so it does kinda play like a linear/corridor shooter sometimes especially on the required levels. But, I loved every minute of playing it, including the ending which is just awesome.
All in all, I had the most fun playing Far Cry 2 since you could pick it up and play it for short periods of time and just have fun blowing the heck out of poor dudes in Africa or blowing random cars, etc. Some of the best explosions in a game yet in there. However, if you want more length I think Mass Effect fits the bill pretty decently. -

Mass Effect is one of the most enjoyable, well-crafted video games I have experienced in my twenty-odd years of video game playing.
-
hmmm...thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll probably go get Fallout 3, snce I just love exploring vast and huge wondrous structures as Theros said; "into exploring creepy, huge random structures"
also in Fallout 3, are there a lot of towns like in Oblivion? and can you go inside the buildings? -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yes its a big vast world, yes you can go into buildings (there is really only a few "towns" though. But it gets dull fast when the entire vast world all looks the same with the same landscape, textures, mood, and enemies.
Weapons are not too vast and the game just did not quite have enough pull to keep me into it.
Now per the thread title comparing each of those games is hard because none of them are the same kind of game or trying to do the same thing.
Fry Cry 2 - Your FPS game
Fallout 3 - Your exploration "oblivion" like game
Mass Effect - More of a RPG game
In fairness I can not rate FC2 since I have not played it yet but between Fallout 3 and Mass Effect. Its Mass Effect all the way, it will probably take longer to beat and its just a better done game.
You will find nothing but high ratings and good reviews of it. -
well atm here is the list of games I 100% will get, so I would like something different from these games:
-Crysis + Warhead
-Dawn of War 2
-The Witcher
-Red Alert 3 -
-
^ I don't have Clear Sky yet, but Shadow of Chernobyl is brilliant.
Mass Effect is $19.99 on Steam. Why the hell not? -
Mass Effect would be my choice. One of my favorite RPG games. Story is great and the action is great as well. The mixture of biotics (jedi-like "powers") and weapons is fantastic.
-
spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
I would say Mass effect with effects of Fallout3 and environment of Far cry2.
-
Fallout 3 has my vote for sure.
-
1. Mass Effect
$19.99 on Steam or at Retail
Great Storyline
Solid/Light RPG Experience
Solid Unreal 3 Graphics (uses modified Engine)
(I liked the novels too)
2. Fallout 3
Own it, haven't played it yet.
Doesn't use Oblivion's leveling system (I'm sorry, it just doesn't work for OCD perfectionists like me)
Part of the Excellent Fallout Universe
3. FarCry 2
This could've been #2 without the obnoxiously rapid enemy respawn system.
Great Graphics and Sound are incredibly immersive, not even considering the semi-decent storyline. -
Haven't played Mass Effect but preferred Fallout 3's overall gameplay and customisation features to FarCry 2 's tasteless package.
-
As said, they are all completely different types of games, you CAN NOT compare them.
FarCry2 was an Action/Stealth FPS, the fact that it wasn't completely forced and linear is why alot of people hated it, if you give people a vast landscape and some guns, but tell them they have to figure everything out themselves, they'll probably get bored and quit. It's a niche game, and unlike the first because the first had a very linear storyline. It can be alot of fun depending on your own playstyle. If you find it boring/hard/easy or whatever, then think about the situation and take another approach at it.
Mass effect is more of a slower, real time RPG that's very story driven, for me, it got kind of boring, too much talking, not enough actual thinking going on, it's like watching a really slow movie. But it's just not my type of game.
Fallout 3 is an action RPG with tons of exploration with a massive landscape, but most of it all has a very grey and dead look. Fallout 3 can be played as a normal FPS without the auto aim system VATS actually pretty well, but it just feels clunky. There's alot more gunplay in this game than there is storyline or talking, but it still gets to the point. I'd say Oblivion was alot more vast with MUCH more to do, but this game is still fun. -
Mass Effect is BY FAR the victor of these three. After that I would say Fallout 3 as I absolutely loved it, but not as much as Mass Effect. FarCry 2 I want to buy, but haven't yet as I have read such mixed reviews I don't know what to make of it.
-
Out of the 3 games being talked about, I'd go with ME, which is just KOTOR, dressed up differentely. FO3...................Boring ! And FC2, take out ammo transport, now assassinate so and so.....................rinse and repeat !
-
I'd say Mass Effect.
Don't consider buying Far Cry 2, except if you REALLY like repetitive games like Assassin's Creed. -
Well out of those three Far Cry 2 looks the best on maxed out settings, it can be quite repetitive though and there is a lot of driving. I really enjoyed both Mass Effect and Fallout 3 and would recommend getting both of them.
-
Another vote for mass effect from me.
Just simply an incredible game that deserves a few more plays. I know in a couple of years I'm going to pop it in and play it again like it was my first time through.
Fallout 3 for a close second. -
EDIT: JUST REALIZED THIS THEAD IS FROM MARCH 09...
Go for Fallout 3 or Mass Effect, I own all three.
Fallout 3 was a blast, and also has new DLCs, but you should be seeing a Fallout3+DLC GOTY edition of the game soon (Oct 13), maybe wait for that one, and grab Mass Effect for the meantime. Might wanna check out Bioshock as well.
-
I played farcry 2 and its sucks badly, so many bugs and glitches, enemies randomly respawing even though you have killed everybody in the villages, but it does have very good graphics and too bad it had so much potential
-
Mass Effect bar none.
-
Mass Effect, hands down.
-
lol u guys jsut brought back a thread thts about 6months old..
And my vote goes to Fallout 3.
-
My vote goes for Far Cry 2, first I thought it was boring, but the more I play the more I love it and the game looks definitely the best out of Fallout 3 and Mass Effect.
I enjoy the graphics in Far Cry 2 maxed out more than I do the Crysis graphics. -
Another vote for Mass Effect. Another great RPG is the Witcher (Enhanced Edition). Far Cry 2 has far too many flaws to be enjoyable.
-
spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
Fall out 3, no question on that!
-
Fallout 3 if you want more out of your money.
Mass Effect if you want a good story line and cool game.
Far Cry 2 if you want to throw money out the window while looking and some good graphics, just so you don't feel cheated. -
I say Mass Effect. Though neither of those games kept me interested for more than 4 hours into them.
I say go for Mass Effect. It kept me occupied for 4.5 hours. XD -
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Fallout 3 bored the hell out of me. One of those reminder games I buy on occasion that reminds me why I don't like RPGs, lol.
Never played Mass Effect.
Lots of guff around about Far Cry 2 but I had a blast with it. Lots of guns, combat style options and action! -
Best Single Player ? Try Far Cry 1 or STALKER. Both better than the 3 being mentioned in this thread !
-
Fallout 3 > everything else
-
Far Cry 2 is repetitive as hell and gets boring very fast. the only time it is fun is when u have the grenade launcher on the jeep and then you are pretty much unstopable
Far Cry 2, Fallout 3, or Mass Effect, best singleplayer?
