Ubisoft let them out for free now, ad supported but who freaking cares?

what does "ad supported" mean?

 

I guess it means that there are ads in the game, such as how EA has ads everywhere in their games.

 

The difference is that this version of the game is free, whereas BF2142 cost $49.99 plus taxes.

I don't know what's worse, developers including ads with a release, or sneaking them in after the fact (ex. SWAT4 and Counter-Strike). The advertisements aren't tastefully done, they're just placed where they get the most view time.

 

The game will download advertisements from companies that wish to advertise to gamers. For instance, loading screens might be replaced by a picture of the gecko from Geico Auto Insurance. Soda machines in a game displaying a generic label in the normal version might display a Pepsi logo in the free version. Weapons crates might have, "Bob's pistol emporium" or some such thing written on them.

Advertisements could be integrated into the environment, as in my Pepsi vending machine example, or thrown into captive audience moments such as loading screens. Or, they could do both.

I think this is a great idea! As long as the ads are done tastefully and don't kill performance, I'd prefer to install Farcry as this advertising version. I already own Farcry, but in my opinion, a little bit of artistic advertising actually ADDS immersion.

 

Hmmm, the FilePlanet download is crawling at ~90KB/s. This'll take at least 8 hours.

 

rly? for me it started at that and then got faster and faster and now im at 150KB/s after about 2 hours. and i only have like 2:45 left...

 

It's climbed to ~170KB/s. I wish this was on a torrent though, I max out at 1850KB/s.

oh yeah, if you never played far cry, play it... it's an awesome game.

 

No wonder when I was trying to do stuff on gamershell servers were really busy. I was wondering why since the bioshock, moh, and wic demos died down. Its available on gamershell.com Servers are full but when server are decently free you get pretty good download speeds.

this free far cry includes multiplayer?

 

Downloaded and installed Far Cry. It is the complete (and fully-patched) retail version, and does indeed include multiplayer.

The ads are not in-game as far as I can tell, but there are ads on the menus and stuff:

Also, you have to sign up for a free account on UBIsoft.com, and they probably send you spam or whatever, so be sure to use an e-mail address besides your main one.

Sounds like a good deal.

Some people have been complaining, through, that you need a CD Key for multiplayer? Can someone debunk this?


And could someone upload the files to MegaShare or Rapidshare? These download speeds are **** slow.

well that sucks, i already played the game, the only reason i'd download it now is to have multiplayer. is no multiplayer confirmed?

chances are if far cry multi doesnt work ghost recon wont as well THAT SUCKS

 

yes, really sucks. they should include multiplayer to get a fanbase going for their online community, even if the game is old, it would still do good for ubisoft in the future.

Yeah, LAN mode works fine. It's only when you click on the "internet" tab - then you have to input your UBIsoft.com name and password, and then it asks for your CD key (which, obviously, you don't have).

Hopefully there will be some kind of update to fix this - I doubt they did it on purpose.

 

i can see them doing this on purpose just to make you buy the game if you want to play online ;\

You mean X3100? Yeah, Ghost Recon is old.

And Far Cry can be played on lower resolutions no problem (800x600).
