    Getting a Compal IFL90, and it comes with a 8600GT with 512MB GDDR2. Since it's MXM-II, I was wondering if there is a MXM-II card that is faster? Like a 8600GT with GDDR3 memory (256MB or higher).

I know the 8700GT is only MXM-III so that's out of the question.

people hope that an 8800 will be MXM II but i think they're dreaming. if the 8700 GT isn't, then i doubt there will be an 8800

the 8600 GT GDDR3 is the fastest MXM II

If I'm not mistaked 7900GS is MXM-II and it is much faster than a 8600GT.

It's not much faster. The 8600m GT GDDR3 performs nearly as good as the 7900 GS.

From what a Sager rep told me the Compal ILF90 is not a MxM configured system (like the Asus c90s and Sager Np5790). The slot/card in the ILF90 is Compal designed and specific, so you will not be able to upgrade your card unless Compal builds a new model that fits the IFL90 slot. :(

Does that mean you can take another MXM-II card and put it in another laptop? Sorry but I don't know much about this. How do you know if your laptop has this capability?

You know because if you buy a laptop with this capability, you are already pretty knowledgeable about computers, and wouldn't ask this question.

The 7900GS you're talking about was a one off from Arima. It shared it's height with Type II cards but it was wider both left and right.

And yes, there is a faster MXM-II card, it's the 256mb GDDR3 8600M-GT offered by Asus, but it won't be fast enough to be worth upgrading to. (And the compatibility is not 100% certain).

I think the reason the 8800 is beleived to be MXMII is it is supposed to be built on 65nm meaning it should be physically smaller, and draw less power. You can buy an MXM II 8600GT GDDR3 for the C90s, But Im not sure if its the normal MXM or some odd version of it (Someone said it was reversed somehow)

Well, Ice Tea isn't sure about compatibility, I believe because he couldn't get the 512mb C90 card to fit in a Uniwill MXM-II notebook. However the reversed form factor you're talking about is the one used in Asus' non-MXM modular notebooks, like the A8js and the V1s. Formfactor wise the C90s is a normal MXM-II (from what I gather).
