I've noticed a fair few, especially recent joiners asking questions about the respective laptops they should buy, play the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI. I thought I'd make a thread for us to all get together, discuss the game, etc.
I'd like those who do play to post a few things, like their character(s) name(s), server(s), and things about their character, ie: race, job, alliance, etc.
My name on FFXI, as it is on here, is Reize, I have three characters, Reize, Reizel and Vaughn, the first was the first character I created, I'm debating between him and the second to keep as my main, an Elvaan warrior playing since December '03, yet still never got above level 50. ^^; His alliance is to San d'Oria, he's rank 6 and resides on the Titan server.
The second is also a Warrior, but a lower leveled one, whose alliance is to Bastok, rank 2, and the main thing he does now is run around Bastok and level Alchemy, currently level 70.5.
The third is a San d'Orian Tarutaru who I tried to make my main at one point but ultimately turned him into a mule.
I've played, and still currently play on the PC and I don't plan on changing.
Iwould like this thread to go on for a while and discuss many different things if enough members of NBR play. I've even thought of things such as creating new characters on a server no one else is on, if we don't occupy them all, and creating a NBR member linkshell. ^^
I'm not sure how this will turn out, I'll post more things on my idea later, like posting news updates here, as well as useful links and fun stuff pertaining to FFXI as well.
I want to see how this turns out for a bit and then really get it all started. =)
My best regards,
Reize

I used to play, but now I am into WoW. FFXI was a great game, but when I first played it the controls were lagged and stuff, so I didn't get into it as much. I played up to a 28 Black Mage...I don't remember the server though. Been along time since I logged in.
-
right now my cousin and i are both on Valefor server. i have "Lamshot" who is a Hume Male, 30 paladin/30 warrior/15 monk/2 ranger everything else is level 1...rank 2 (needs to do 2-3 to rank up to 3).
Also in the lineup i have "Dooms" who is a 21blm/7whm (underleved sub..i know, i hardly play him)..only reason i keep him, is so when i do level him..he already has drain from a year ago (when it goes 20k..now its hovering at around 250k).

I've been an FFXIer since the original Beta testing in the summer of.... '03? While I seldom play these days, I've still got a few characters on Ragnarok. My main's highest level is 43 paladin, but these days I've been working on warrior (39) to level up with my girlfriend's character. Alot of times, we just run out in a group of two, fighting easy stuff....a slow way of levelling up, but is convenient when you've only got an hour or less to kill.
Got a couple of "mules", one being a galka whose name I got from the random name generator: Elderlycrawfish. I've obviously held onto that moniker ever since. -
So, we've got two players so far.. ^^;
Anyway, onto the discussion, two is enough, heck one is enough for me. =3
Game Spot recently reviewed the X-Box 360 version of FFXI, and gave it a 6/10, whereas the previous versions get an 8/10. They complained of things such as 'inexhorbitant monthly fees' (it's $12.95...) and 'no X-Box Live achievements' (how exactly are you going to pull that off on an MMORPG...) as well as the installation time '3 hours is unacceptable for a console game'
Honestly I think the reviewer is a complete idiot... I'd like to discuss this.
Here's the link to the review:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/finalfantasy11/review.html?sid=6148572
I honestly can't understand his views on this. It was good on other consoles, yet a port makes it horrible? He also thinks the people who play on the XBOX 360 should get some sort of bonus over PC and PS2 players... What kind of nonsense is that? -
Elderlycrawfish Notebook Consultant
I'll have to read that review later, but it does sound a bit silly. Complaining about fees and downloading times for an MMORPG is silly, and the fact that the reviewer thinks it unfitting for consoles is more a complaint of MMOs in general, not for FFXI specifically.
A port of a 3 year old game might not be the best usage of a spankin' new gaming system, but the game itself has held up well over the years, and hey, it's better then having someone make something like that horrible Everquest PS2 game.
As for perks, sheesh. Didn't demo/beta players on 360 get to transfer their characters over? That's quite a perk right there! -
They also get it a LOT cheaper than PC and PS2 players. PC players paid $80 at the LEAST currently, many payed $120($50 for original, $30 for CoP, $30 for ToAU). PS2 players had to pay nearly $200! They're complaining about a bad deal, ALL that for only $50! That makes up for a YEAR of monthly payments, these people really need to learn things like basic math...
-
Hello! Im Gaghiel from Phoenix ^^ a BlackMage 52, WHM 31, SMN 23, and currently Im playing as a Corsair lvl 23 (and loving it).
-
i think the 360 players have it great...yes they are mostly new players, but they have the best deal..$50 for ALL the expansion packs in one, and a 3 hour install/download...cry me a river..for me most things arent just a one time procedure...
that reviewer should really rethink that...you are playing an MMORPG that is updated almost weekly...so how can there not be a long install/download process?
pb,out. -
He thinks an over 20Gb game should start up and be on within seconds, because all the others that are a fraction of its size do too... -.-;
-
Just a little bump.... Along with some more discussion topics!
Does anyone else have the same mindset as me? with the three new jobs and the many people playing them, making the level areas PACKED and thus hurting overall experience gain... I've decided to continue leveling up my crafts and making money, so when things get back to normal I'll really stand out, being all-encompassingly prepared. Y'know..?
As a side-note, it's funny reading reviews on that site, obviously over half of the people on there haven't even played the game...
Stuff like "you have 4 nations to choose your alliance to when starting" hah... He thought you could start in Jeuno...
Everyone complaining about monthly fees then saying get WoW instead... If I'm not mistaken WoW is $20 /per month... Do these people know how to count?
Another guy said FFXI has no monthly fee, and MMORPGs w/o monthly fees suck... I swear the anonymity of the internet makes people's IQs drop significantly... -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
WoW is $15.99/month. I agree about the MMO's that are free...they don't have enough support or updates. FFXI was $12.99/month + $1 per character. Which isn't bad.
-
well if MMORPGs were free, and none of them charged fees, who am i to complain? HOWEVER..thats a caplocked however.. free MMORPGs IMO will not deliver the scheduled updates/maintenance/new content/bug fixes that you would get with a monthly subscription..that is what we are mainly paying for...our money helps them run their servers, it helps them pay support to help us, it pays for many things that many people do not notice. right now, i have 2 wow accounts, and one for FFXI..i like both, and will continue to play both..
if you have something against the monthly fees, then think of it this way..for me paying a monthly fee is almost equivalent to me buying lunch once per week in by my school...i spend anywhere from $8-13 per lunch, when i dont bring my lunch.
pb,out. -
I still don't play FF XI mainly of the thing called a credit card, lol. But I'm trying to get one and hopefully will join the FFXI community soon...I bought the game like a year ago and it's still inside the box, lol.
-
I wasn't saying MMORPGs w/o fees were as good, if you thought that, I was saying the guy was stupid enough and played so little if at all to not even know it had fees. =X
(Just in case you misunderstood)
EDIT:
zicky, if you like, when you get on I'll get a world pass for you(in-game item that gives you a code that allows a character to basically choose a server), show you around, teach you a thing or two, explain stuff, etc.
If you're interested, let me know. -

Getting back a little more on topic....
Question for CiD or anyone else: How do you like Corsair / the new jobs? I don't really play enough these days to justify rushing out to get the expansion, but it sounds like fun and something to do eventually.
Also, I haven't really been looking, but how are the quests to unlock the new jobs? I dig the easier-to-unlock quests of the pre-expansion jobs; the Zilart jobs were a bit more of a nuisance to unlock..... -
I'm not getting the expansion myself either, until I make some more money and turn Reizel into my main, I've decided.
Just curious why do you think a FFXI review isn't on topic? When I made this thread that was one thing I really wanted to discuss. ^^; -
I play FFXI as well, have played since it was released to North America. Server I play on is Diabolos... and you could say I play to much because my whm and rng are 75 and numerous other jobs at various levels.
Currently I still play it quite a bit because I have a semi static party with a few friends. Prior to the static I tried out Blue Mage, its an interesting job, but only got it up to 28 and stopped, job I'm working on with the static is summoner. -

Not off-topic per se, but we were starting to generalize about MMOs in general and fees and whatnot. Fair game for the topic, but I thought I'd inject more FF goodness to go along with it!
Though to address your review points, I do agree that there was a... bit of a slant. I can understand why someone would have some beef over the pay/download dynamic for a console, but I hardly think it's fair to wave around the negative points without taking into consideration the upside as well. -
The main thing that bothered me... He gave the PC and PS2 versions both 8s.
He said somehow the gameplay got WORSE, the graphics were WORSE, the sound was WORSE, etc...
That makes no sense, whatsoever to me.. -
Maybe its something about expectations... that since he's playing on an Xbox360 the graphics, sound and possibly gameplay would just magically get better? Due to the hardware the Xbox360 has.
Of course they could have made the FFXI on the Xbox360 better, not by just allowing higher resolution and what not, but by recoding FFXI specifically for the Xbox360. But that is unrealistic because to code a separate version just for the Xbox360 is a lot of extra work which knowing Square-Enix, is to lazy to do. (Well maybe not lazy, but not willing to spend extra money and resources on.) -
They also want to ake the experience for everyone to be the same, otherwise it'd be unfair.
-
pb,out. -
Make the res on the PC version high enough and I think it looks better than the 360. ^.~

my notebook is 1536x1536..my desktop refuses to run FFXI (im assuming because of dual core, but i know of people who have no issues..ill get it fixed eventually)
i like this one ^_~
pb,out. -
Good luck with that.
So, what's everyone's opinion on FFXI Forums? Alla, KI, GameFAQs, Dreams in Vana'Diel, etc. -
Hey Elderly! Im loving the Corsair job, but these days there are a lot of people with the new job, si its difficult sometimes to get a decent party
The quest mmmh well they are difficult if you dont have friends that have jobs lvl 60+ because the new zones are really difficult and scary. I unlocked corsair with my blm lvl 52, a WHM lvl 66 a DRG lvl 75 and a WAR lvl 66 and we still died 2 timesbut that was because everybody wanted to know the new areas and fight the new mobs ¬_¬ lol
But if you can unlock them do it!, they give to the game a new breath and new things to do ^^ if you are in Phoneix send me a /tell and i'lbe glad to help you! -
I haven't checked the quests yet, which require difficult NMs if any? If they don't require then they're easily soloable, but I'm a sneak, I can make it anywhere with enough supplies just fine..
-
Hmm no they donte require any NM, well at least for Corsair I know you have to walk a little bit and watch all the cutscenes.
Lol the problem is that some enemies dont care if you have Sneak/deodorize/invisible on in the new areas, they agro even at lvl 75 thats why its difficult to get there.
You can solo it, but if sneak wears off in a bad place be carefull! ^^; -
Some regular mobs now have TrueSight?
Either way, it's not hard to sneak past them if you know what you're doing. -
i like Alla/KI(flame fest) mostly..i havent really seen any other good sites for FFXI lately..
pb,out. -
Alla was bought by IGe, so I no longer go there.. KI is okay, but their site loads really slow so I don't go there much either. i go to GameFAQs when I want to laugh at idiots. I mostly just go to my LS forums to talk about it..
-
I've heard this game takes a long time to install, so how long does it take to install??? I've read times from about a little more than hour up to a whole day!!! I have a ****py 128kbps connection, the thing is, the times I've heard, they never tell you how fast is their connection, just the type they have.
-
Well, on that slow of a connection, it'll be several hours, understand you're downloading over 15 GB (with all the expansions) off of SE's server. The installation itself isn't horrible, it'll probably take a few hoursd, then you download the updates, which are the bad part. All in all it's worth it though.

Here's a nice little website for you crafters:
http://www.titanictus.com/tools/guild/
Check online what items the guilds are asking for before logging on. Enjoy! -
Wow! 15 GB!!! That's a lot, hours you say...that will be weeks for me!!!!! I guess I'll have to go to a cybercafe and ask them to "loan" me their connection for a few hours. I don't have all the expansions though, only the first one. But 15 GB!!! That will certainly eat up my HDD.
-
With just the first one, it took me, and I did this just a few days ago, around 8 hours total.
-
hope you arent bringing your desktop to a internet cafe...lol...ps2 might be stretching it...but a notebook should be easily acceptable...most that i have seen either have wireless or wired specifically for notebooks.
yes the game is a HUGE download..on cable though it takes me roughly an hour and a half... (i have all the expansions installed via disc)
pb,out. -
I was listening to Penny Arcade's Podcast and I heard themsay that FFXI for the 360 sucked because of the graphics, and they mentioned nothing else, just said it sucked because of that... I thought the makers of Penny Arcade were a bit more intelligent than that...

Hi all, new poster here:
I used to play ffxi back during US PC release, and with the new expansion I'm eager to pick it up again. I was wondering if you guys play on your laptops, if you do what kind of card/processor/ram you have and how smooth does it run. specifically i was looking at the dell e1505 with 1.83 ghz core duo, x1400, and 1 gig of ram. I want to be able to play with most effects on and a decent framerate. If you guys have any screenshots of ffxi on your laptop that'd be great, thanks -
As for the laptop you are looking at, it is similar to what I have, except a better processor (Core Duo) and slightly better video card. The Core Duo, given its a dual core CPU, the clock speed is lower but I would suspect it is still faster then mine (not weighing in the dual core since FFXI does not directly benefit from dual core [Single threaded game]). As for the video card, the x1400 is based on roughly the same feature set as the MR9700 (4 pixel shaders) but improved and I believe faster clock rate.
So I would think its easily runable, just depends on how high of a resolution you wish to play. I play mine at 1024x768 with textures set at 1024x1024. But there is one thing to note, if you ever plan to do Beseiged or Dynamis, I would almost guarantee you there will be lag. So many players generally go that unless you have a really good system, you'll basically lag here and there. -
I'm able to nearly max most of the settings out a a Pentium 4-M 1.7GHz with 512MB PC2300 RAM and a Radeon mobility 7500, the E1505 is a TON better than that, so, yeah, you'll be able to max it out easily.
FFXI can benefit from the dual core, but really only if you use the windower, otherwise, it makes no difference.
Another thing, if you're picking it up again, did you delete your old chars and such? If so, if you like I can get you a world pass to my server and get you started again, a bit of financial help, nothing enormous, i'm not filthy rich, just some stuff to get you on your way, a linkshell to keep you company, etc.
As for besieged and dynamis, even the best PCs get lag there, it has to do with SE's servers being designed to be fair to all players, seeing as they run at 56k.
EDIT:
You said you were 'looking at', i'm guessing that means you haven't bought it yet, if you like, you could fill out the FAQ and we could try to find something that'd fit your needs well. -
Thanks for the replies! I still have my character on Bahamut, and so I'd likely just start from there, thanks though
. Still wondering what to play... How is the PLD field looking out there? Last time I remember that most people prefer nin tanks
.
-
It's still that way quite a bit, unfortunately...
You can still make it fine as a PLD though, regardless, tanks are scarce. -
i love being a PLD...i usually get invites as soon as i log in..when i tank, and the nin tries to voke off me...nothing happens
i always love that..and IMO they just dont do enough damage to hold hate that well (my experience is only up to yuhtunga jungle/yhoatar jungle)
pb,out. -
Later in the game, as well as in the 40s, Ninjas, good ones anyway, are extremely good DDs, they suck that early in the game, but when they get Ni nukes, while those are still powerful spinning the elemental wheel popping the mob for 90 dmg every 2 seconds adds up.
After that, when they're no longer as good, Ninjas become good through their Katanas, which become very powerful later in the game, and the rich guys can use the most powerful weapons in the game, Shurikens. -
Just thought I'd revive the thread again and add a bit to it.
I've recently decided that I'll most likely be spending this Summer making gil in FFXI so that I can actually not have to worry about it anymore. I'll be leveling crafts and I hope to, by 2007, have all crafts but fishing up to 60 and Goldsmithing up to 100. As well as have several million gil <_>;
However, if you knew me as long as my in-game friends have you'd know this plan will change soon enough =X -
Again I bump, again! Liiiiiiiiiiive!
Anyway...
Who's excited for the chocobo owning thing coming up?
