Just got a key to the Open Beta to XIV. And I'm wondering how the rest of you with laptops are handling this game.

Is it lagging too much, what settings are you using, etc.

The game's UI is horrible but the graphics are gorgeous. Have'nt played too much of it, due to the horrible controls which make it very hard to enjoy.

Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are.

Idk, i just wish the graphics were better optimized and the UI was smoother, right now its hard to enjoy with the extremely laggy mouse, and the unbearable studdery graphics :(

I got into the beta...woohoo!! By the way, what resolution are you playing? I'm having tough time getting the game to be full screen.

Played it for a bit, the laggy mouse issue sucks, as does the random crashes.

The whole system, UI and combat wise, seem very console oriented.

At fullscreen 1600 x 900, no AA, buffer size: resolution, shadow: standard, no ambient oclusion, no depth of field, texture quality: high, texture filtering: highest - fraps reports an average of 33fps; not bad I think :)

Sounds like buying a USB controller would be a wise decision

I got a code, registered the game and it tells me I need to download from the test site. I click on the site, login but it does not load anything, it returns saying "this site is for beta testers login" etc.

Where can I download the game?

I'm using the xbox 360 controller. I think one thing they need to include is the pre-set recommended configurations for the gamepads. I had to configure the whole thing myself.

The graphics can definitely use optimization. I'm running the game with half the options turned off in order to get a respectable framerate. I guess I will have to give up the 1080p resolution to get better performance.

Sorry about that!! Yea, i didn't read before posting...it changes periodically according to square-enix. Keep trying to get into the tester website, it takes a couple of attempts and it lets you through. Are you clicking on the next page?

    Welcome to open beta :)

A lot of other MMOs have done far worse, in my experience.

Luckily, my application, registration, installation and update expereince was as smooth as a baby's butt.

Is this one of those games that have monthly subscription fee? If so, why not just play WoW or something?

The game is really good, it's just the UI that impedes everyone from enjoying it BKS1987. It's better than wow, thats for sure, i want to like the game but rite now its impossible.

IMO it's quite a crap game, played for an hr in frustration and deleted it.

1.The control and UI is horrible, yes, having some animation of fading in and out when loading your menu is nice for the first couple of times, but after a while it just gets really annoying because you just want to the menu to come up instantly.

    2. The character movements are very rigid, no jumping whatsoever, it makes the game feel like crap.

    3. Very bad spawn rate design, there's like 10+ players camping for a single rabbit or something, and just walking a bit further up is the dodos that will completely pwn you.

The downloading was really frustrating but this is OPEN BETA and not the final release. You must have created your character in a full server. Have you even tried the other cities/areas/server? As an open beta tester, it's really up to you to tell SE what you think about the game.

You'll most likely run into downloading difficulties with the patches. If so, go to My Games > Final Fantasy XIV Beta Version > downloads > ffxiv-beta and you'll see two folders. When you're downloading the patch and you get timedout, you can download the patch using the files on the metainfo folder within the two folders that I've mention.
