I was at the press conference. :)

It was definitely surprising.... my older brother and young sis are hyped about it since they were FFXI players.

I, on the other hand, am not as hyped.... especially seeing how epic "The Old Republic" is and having a good Q&A about it.

That and the new FF XIV will be on PS3 only apparently.

Mmm, I have mixed feelings about this. Having played the Final Fantasy franchise for years, I am not sure how playing a Final Fantasy MMO is going to go over with many hard core fans. I just hope Nobuo Uematsu writes the music for it.

    That would be awesome.

I have almost every Square RPG soundtrack.

Nobuo Uematsu and Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono series, Xeno series, etc.) are my favorite game music composers for epic scores. :)

PS3 only ruins it for me, I am a PC gamer. Even if I had PS3 already not sure I really feel a MMO on a console is the right place for it.

I guess if I want to get back into a MMO its going to be Aion, possibly the old republic.

I agree on the music, what do you guys think I listen too all night at work?

I bring my laptop and DJ game soundtracks and anime music :p

It IS on the PC. I don't know if I'll play it though. I will wait and see how much they changed from FFXI. I played it for 2 years, but it really needs a massive overhaul.

if its on other platforms, it makes the game more viable for more people to play together.

I think that was the theme of recent gaming expos... co-op gameplay and cross-platforming.

Ah then I will look at it more, while I enjoyed WoW overall more than FFXI. There were many things FFXI had to offer that WoW couldnt even imagine doing.

Now there is a new game maybe it will have the best of both worlds.

I am hyped for Knights of the Old Republic and Aion: The Tower of eternity.

Though FFXI lost its flavor after a while. I just could not like it. As much as i wanted to. I could not pull myself to like the game.

Unless this game has as combat system that is alot more action oriented like Aion and WoW. I don't see myself playing anytime soon.

The combat system is one of the things I liked on FFXI it took some skill and coridnation to be good. Chain attacks, magic burst. It was worlds above world of warcraft.

I liked the sub class system too, I had good times with sneak attack as a dark knight or dragoon.

The ability to have a sub class was one of the best features in that game. I just hope they keep it in the next!

I did the weekend betas. It seems not quite as deep as many mmorpgs so far, but for me personally, it has the right blend of playability and graphics to be a keeper - at least for a while.

FFXIV still sounds more interesting though.

It's pretty standard mmo fare...target mob, click skill on skill bar, etc. Nothing really novel here. There's a combo system, which basically just means certain skills can only be used after certain other skills, nothing too special though.

Overall, I haven't found the game too revolutionary, but then again, there's a lvl 10 cap this time around, so we miss out on most of the good stuff (you get your wings and your class change at lvl 10).

Hmmm...right now it seems between Mortal online, Aion, and FFXIV, for me to play for the long haul.

It will really be up to the combat system for me to decide which one I'll stick with. I didn't mind the combat system in WoW so much...but it was a little sluggish for me, especially with the global cd. After healing in Guildwars, anything slower than 1/2 second casts seems too long.

Aion's skill system is very similar to WoW's actually. There's a short global CD, and instant casts can be used while moving. I really didn't find anything too special about it. I just like the game because it has a good balance of graphics gameplay and the later levels look to be interesting (the PvPvE thing, holding territory, etc.)...

It's nowhere as good as the system in FFXI.

FFXI is one game I never worried about PVP, I dont even remember PVP in that game lol.

but I have seen various other mmo' fall apart due to weak pvp.

I remember Warhammer was supposed to be the great new pvp based MMO and I was in the beta and very disappointed.

Im kinda afraid Aion looks similar to how it worked, different graphics/classes/balance but still the same spam fest orgy type thing.

On that same token though look at WoW, the largest most popular MMO, people were quite content with the average graphics, they tried to up the scale for the expansions and now so many people are having problems playing the game.

They can care less if it looked all great, they just want it to run great, as a MMO is all about the experience and interaction.

that is true, and you are also right about the problems i remember hearing about the nightmarish shadow problems as well.

Still though could you imagine something like final fantasy XIII Graphics in real time on an MMO? That would be amazing :)

Yeah I think high graphics was the goal for AoC and it failed bad. I bet even now WoW has lost a lot of game time and maybe even subscribers as there computers are not running the game like it used too.

Fact of the matter is the vast majority of people by a very large margin have older/slower computers. We see more of us with nice machines as we are regulars on a technology forum, and even amongst us there are many with older/slower machines.

For a MMO to work as a massive multiplayer online game it first needs a massive amount of people playing :p

So basically for a MMO to use very advanced graphics I feel it would be the type that does not support or reward large groups, and that means not massive battlefields.

However, an MMO would succeed if it could make a game that's much more scalable than normal games. Look at the minimum and recommended specs for Dragon age: Origin, the gap is huge. That way they can still hit the masses, that can turn down the graphics, and still make the people happy that actually invested money in their pc.

Yes but scaling only goes so far, if you have crysis like grapics even a high end system is not going to handle a 500 man cluster fark.

Though I would prefer a game that uses small group pvp anyways, those massive orgy battles are no fun, you just kite around spamming AOE, or if your meele rush in and slice away hoping somebody heals you.

The skill level required and individual responsibility is just totally at a loss.

Im ok with a MMO with no PVP and just great PVE, I get my PVP in FPS games by shooting people in the head :D

I agree completely. I HATE the battlegrounds in WoW. I hate to keep going back to it, but GW pvp was perfect because you could play from 4v4 to 10v10 and it was all about coordination. The only real problem I had was that there was no open world pvp, because I do enjoy going on the occasional gank fest.

Gah yeah that was one of the worst experience to me was trying to camp rare spawns for items you were required to have to make it on a good team/guide. When people had programs to help them or also I heard the JP servers see the spawns like a full 1 or 2 seconds before you do making it near impossible to get the spawn.

One time I managed to pull the rare dragonfly thing on the beach and it was like one hit from dead as I had to solo it and I died :(

I agree, the respawn rate on some of the NM in FFXI is just ridiculous and add to that the fact that for some you need a full alliance to take it down and the last kicker, a low drop rate. Frustrating to say the least, but it makes the satisfaction of having the items that much more rewarding.

But, I'm an optimist and feel SE will find a compromise for FFIV.

I hope so too, I want to get back into it but cant donate my life and soul, it needs to be a bit more casual where only 2 hours of game time is enough to do something and leaving a team due to real life is not a death sentence to your team mates and your reputation.

I'd have to agree, whenever the new one comes out, i'll definately be taking more of a casual approach to the game. mainly just looking forward to playing with some of my old ls mates.
