Anyone playing the recent Final Fantasy(s) for PC?
I'm so turned off buy the fact you must pay a monthly subscription.
Is it worth it?

Ah darn, I was so hoping this thread was about "square-enix announces FF12 or FF13 will be released for the PC" or something like that.
I also have heard from my friend that this MMORPG FF11 wasn't very fun / was buggy. I'd subscribe to the WoW expansion that will be out this month instead, FF11 is good just isn't worth paying for. -
That's what I heard, sorta, pretty-much --.
Basically I need a new RPG.
I really want Oblivion, but I don't think my 128mb Nivida GO 7600 will do a very good job. In addition, I notice a lot of reviews that claim 3.0ghz CPU is what gets an "enjoyable" exprience -- and I only have a 1.8 C2D. -
Oblivion is overrated anyway (And if you like Final Fantasy-kind of RPG's, you probably won't like Oblivion)
It's just a big sandbox with hundreds of almost identical quests and some really upside down game mechanics (Whatever you do, don't level up. It only makes the game harder). Oh, and of course, there seem to be roughly 5 different people in the game world. But each has been magically cloned 500 times.
Good fun for goofing around a week or two. But not much of a *game* as such. Just a big pretty, and repetetive, playground. -
So what would you suggest might be a good RPG for PC?

FF11?
Well, I had a go with it for about a month, wasn't really my thing...
Been a WoW-er for about a year now, loving it, perhaps a few friends also playing it and meeting new people in my guild and using vent made it so much better! -
. Not too many good RPGs for awile now. Dungeon Siege II was the last RPG i played and i liked it a lot. Oblivion is also great for about 45-60 hours before it starts to get repetitive and boring. Heroes of might and magic 5 is OK as well but not as good as legendary HoMM3. Gothic 3 is bad. The new WoW expansion looks to be good or the new guild wars are good subscription game options. Not too sure whats coming out but you can always check ign.com or gamespot.com for that.

Vampire: Bloodlines
- FPS/RPG style, great story/immersion; slow loading times, but your PC should be able to handle it.
Temple of Elemental Evil
- If you like a strategic style D&D turned based game. Make sure to get Circle of Eight user made patch/mod
Neverwinter Nights (2)
- Lots of user made content; D&D based also
- I haven't played 2, as my current comp can't handle it (once I get a new one...)
If your willing to overlook ancient graphics try Planescape: Torment for one of the, if not the, greatest CRPG stories ever. -
I play FFXI, its awesome if you have friends who play as well.
Otherwise it could get pretty boring ^.^ -
Well I looked more into Oblivion; a game I will someday get but not at the current price. Too much of a risk that it won't play too well on my system!
but I got Battlefield 2142 instead tonight at Best Buy. Played with it for an hour and enjoyed it but never ventured online yet. -
Oblivion will probably run pretty well on your computer actually, runs well on my X1600 256MB.
-
Final Fantasy III for the SNES FTW!!!
Also, I run Oblivion ony my X1600 OC'd and I still didn't like the frame rates. No grass, medium-highish settings. So I've stopped in my quest to save the world there. -
Or FF3 for the DS, I got it but have yet to open it, need to finish Harvest Moon DS first

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!

Emulation is possbile but I've read that you need at least a go7900gs to get FFXII running properly and even then, its not all full speed. -
Nethack, anyone?
Seriously though, the best RPG's are for the handhelds and consoles. I'm at level 60 in FFXII, and it's still eating up my time every night that it can. I'm also looking at getting a DS Lite and FFIII, FF:TA (any other good GBA/DS RPG's out there?) whenever it gets back in stock at pretty much any store. There's not a single one available for purchase in the Denver area from what I can see.
I'd recommend FFVII for the PC (you may need to work to get it running on XP... it was designed for Win95). I'd also suggest looking into emulators and ROM's if you have the console/handheld versions, so you can play them on your computer. -
Yeah, I have a few PSX emulators. Played FF7 over 30 times since it's been released. Played and beaten every FF1-10. Love them!

I should really get back to playing FFXII. Fantastic game, but I somehow stopped playing and never got around to picking it up again (I think my team is in the mid-40s). -

Since Pitabred mentioned FF: TA, I figured the strategy/semi-RPG genre was fair game as well.
On the horizon as well, as I understand is FF6 and FF:TA2, coming to a Gameboy near you!
And while somewhat unrelated, us PSP owners have a remake of the original Final Fantasy Tactics (new cutscenes! couple of new jobs!) to look forward to.
