See sig below. Is this great for Crysis 3(future gaming)?
-
If you can afford it, I don't think it matters. But I would make sure it can OC the CPU 20-25 %
-
I hate to say it, but you are getting ripped off by Dell....

It's hard to predict what the future will bring. For all we know, we might all end up struggling to connect our laptops to 4k or 8k television displays, etc., at some point.
However, Crysis 3 is set to release in 2013 and your new machine should make quick work of any game at 1080p resolution for the next several years.
Also, the AMD 7000m series cards have hardware acceleration support for Partially Resident Textures, which I imagine will improve performance on id Tech 6 and similar future game engines using megatexture technology. -
How much did you pay for that?

Megacharge Custom User Title
Congrats, that's a beastly rig that will perform great, well into the future. -
How can you say it without knowing the price yet.
With 7970cf and 500ssd I dont think he got ripped off. Might still be a bit expensive than other brands but if he really like it then its worth it.
Edit: Yes its not a rip off. SSD and the extra 7970 for the CF alone can be about $1200 already. Its like having a base M18x for about $1600 then just add the cost of a normal HDD. Its not far from the price of the base M17x with 7970m. -
Seeing that you are also a Dellienware owner, I find it pointless to engage in arguement regarding the horrid price markup that Dell practices.
-
Now, now let's all play nice... don't get into a flame war like I did in another thread...
-
I guess I can say the same with you being a non-alienware owner but thats not my point. Saying that he got ripped off without knowing how much his unit cost is kind of stupid.
I know he can get a cheaper equivalent in Sager but is that what he wants? My point is you have to know the facts first. If he can afford it then for him its peanuts.
Many people refer to the posted AW price in the website without knowing that you can actually get a more reasonable setup if you know how to bring the price down and just get the upgrades you want somewhere.
Anyway, this is not between us lol. If you really think he got ripped off then site an example. Put something from Sager with similar specs and let us see how much higher his AW laptop is in terms of pricing.
Then we can say if its too expensive. -
That's a pretty nice deal. I know firsthand how powerful the 7970M is, but two of them? Definitely beast.
I think the "AW is overpriced" thing is overblown. If you do your research and get a discount, you can get a good deal on one. I got my M17x R4 for $1964, final price (not including the SSD). Not much more than a comparable NP9170, especially considering most Sager buyers don't have to pay tax. I might have gotten a Sager myself, but their keyboard layout is crap. AW's keyboards are just about perfect. The cooling performance is phenomenal too. When browsing the internet with the GPU turned off, it's literally silent 90% of the time. I have my storage HDD set to turn off after 5 minutes of idle and the CPU fan is off most of the time. -
There's no reason to flame. I don't see anyone trying to force you to buy an Alienware.
-
Also, the fact that it's preloaded with an OS could make it a little more expensive than the Sager's from a base price.
Also, Xfire 7970M's are not offered in Sagers, so there is absolutely no other laptop to compare OP's M18x to in order to consider it "overpriced".
Either way, an M17x with a 7970M, i7-3610QM, 256GB SSD, 1080p 60Hz Display, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM will cost $2294.
A Sager NP9170 with that will cost $1864 (however, there was no 256GB SSD option, only a 240GB SSD, so comparism might be a little skewed).
However, AW has a much better sound system (i think...) Creative Sound Blaster with THX Software versus Onkyo. AW also has more backlight options, while I believe Sager only has... what, 8 colors? I dont recall correctly, but nowhere near the amount AW offers.
AW also has more personalizing options as well.
The thing is, you can't really compare the two laptops, since AW offers more options that Sager doesn't offer, so you can't really deem one "overpriced".
Either way, both Sager and Dell's customer support is terrible, soo... -
Great system. I hear 7970M CF is just about able to play Tetris in 1080p with Ultra settings. Quite an achievement.
No seriously, you are able to play all games in max settings for years to come
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
I don't see how he could have picked up that machine for significantly less anywhere else. It's expensive, but it's not a rip off.
-
What if I told you you could get an equally kitted AW M17x-R4 for merely +$100 on a same spec Clevo?
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
tetris? bah not even that demanding compared to minesweeper at 1440p, might have to play on high though
-
Ripoff or not.. that how Alienwares always have been
Haha dont tell him that
Also to the OP.. why did you go with Windows 7 Premium with such a machine... I'm oddly confused :O -
It's an awesome system, welcome to the Alienware family.
-
Why not...?
-
You are not kidding? I would assume you were with the amount of full stops/periods you've managed to squeeze in there
but ok lets stop the fun.
Windows 7 Home Premium ONLY supports the following:
- 16 GB of physical memory (RAM)
- NO remote desktop... sadly
I use this.. he probably doesn't but still
really Cloudfire? (no offense).. I would presume you would know things like this.. heh -
I got no money but can I upgrade in the future? I got MS office 2010 though.
-
Whats wrong with 16GB Max jaug? That is more than enough, even for seriously hardcore users.
OP have 8GB which also is more than enough and he have room for additional 8GB.
Not long ago it was 4GB that was the "gotta have" with RAM. 6 months ago or somthing it was 8GB. Have we gone to 32GB now? Guess I`m getting old and not able to keep up
Haven`t heard about that remote desktop thingy before though -
Sure you can
but don't do that not necessary
also your version of MS office doesn't change the slightest thing.
Oh yes it's enough alright, just asking the OP, also a max of 192GB of RAM on the Windows 7 Editions above the Premium one is quite high.. consider being future proof.. anyways not everyone does CAD work like me
aw man..
And the remote thingy, never mind.. it's for servers etc -
Thank you, brother.
-
Ah, I see jaug, AutoCAD. Yeah legit reason for moar RAM I guess
-
That is some kind of monster you bought there, congratulations!
-
I got my M17X with just one 7970m about a week ago and its stupid fast, i can only immagine what 2 of these in cross fire would do. Thats a monster system!!!!!!!!! Never mind the haters, these are the same people that spend $200 month on cell phone bill and then tell you your getting ripped off. If you keep your laptop for just 2 years it will cost you about $116 a month.
-
I know. I am just waiting for my alien tech laptop and official drivers to support CF.
-
Maybe 4 years time a mid range gpu will be as powerful as your 7970m lol.
-
How did you get that so CHEAP, dude? >.<
-
Nice, around the same price I paid for my Panther 2.0
CrossfireX 7970M, i7 960 desktop processor, 12 gigs ram, 500gb HDD (got SSDs at home)
Paid $2679 -
My only question is why an M18x over a desktop?
He can't overclock the 3720QM. -
Alienwares are easier to steal.
-
Possibly wrong. M17x-R4's with 3720QMs and 3820QMs can be overclocked by 400 mhz in bios. M18x will almost undoubtedly have the same feature.
-

Dell charges a fortune on Ram and harddrive upgrades. So first trick is to get the base config, but load up on the 1080p screen and upgraded vid card...then upgrade the harddrive and ram yourself at a fraction of the cost. CPU's are also plentiful on Ebay for a fraction too.
and the other trick is that you never pay retail price on alienware. Visit the forum for the tips and tricks
It isn't possibly wrong, it is absolutely wrong. Ivy Bridge Allows the user to up the multi 4x in non-xm processors. This is implemented in the Alienware bios....so that means that the 3720 will go to 4ghz single core and the 3820 will go to 4.1ghz single core. This has already been confirmed in the m17x R4 and will definitely be implemented in the m18x R2. It is an Intel feature, not an alienware thing -
show me a laptop other than a retard strong monster from Falcon northwest that gets the performance of the M18x r2 and I will eat my own foot. Seriously. Ill stick it in a George Foreman grill and go to town.
-
You got a power hungry i7 960 45nm 130w tdp cpu when a 3612qm 35w cpu is slightly faster.
-
Getawayfrommelucas Notebook Evangelist
Look @ any Sager.
I want pictures btw
PS. I'm happy for the OP -
Not seeing any with a dual graphics setup, let alone 7970's.
-
Getawayfrommelucas Notebook Evangelist
That's probably because they're sold out. -
I have checked all the major sellers and they don't have any even listed as an option. all either single 670's or 675's...
-
I'm not sure what country you are looking for these major resellers in but Xotic, Mythlogic and Malibal (of course Sager itself) all have the 7970m as the option as of this writing. With the 7970m problems, they may remove the option for a few days but as of this writing, that upgrade is still an option. dual no sure.
-
There's not even anything special about Falcon NW, they're just another Clevo reseller. The M18x isn't special, though, you can get the same thing from most Clevo resellers, though I wouldn't go so far as to call the AW a ripoff. If that's what he wants, it's what he wants.
-
So is there no other option besides the M18x R2 for a dual 7970M Crossfire setup? If yes, a link would be helpful.
-
Karamazovmm Overthinking? Always!
the p270wm is currently being redesigned/solving issues/ whatever, its been recalled.
According to the resellers there was a model supposed to come with dual gpus at the 17'' format, replacing the p180hm -
I heard that one too. There is a 17'' model that will replace the old 18'' that they had and it will be able to do CF/SLI. It is expected to be released in November. I was told this by a reseller.
-
November?
So basically until the end of the year the M18x R2 has no real opponent. -
True, by maybe Windows 8 is a factor.. or maybe the 680M is another factor... or maybe CF support... or maybe SLI support... there are a few factors that could be of benefit to wait... maybe even ivy bridge second gen will be out by then... nobody really knows for sure
Finally gave in. Bought this beast.
