Hey folks, I've been searching news about new Graphic card that will come by Nvidia, and found this Turkish site. I don't know if anyone sent before. They gathered lots of informations about the new GTX 480M card. I couldn't focus on translating ( University examinations :p), so used google translator.

There is the website: Nvidia'dan en h?zl? mobil GPU: Tüm detaylar?yla GeForce GTX 480M

GF100 high power consumption is needed considering the GPU, the GeForce GTX 480M graphics chip for desktop powered by a team compared to his brothers that it was inevitable changes and modifications. Desktop Replacement segment of the high-performance models used in the GeForce GTX 480M laptop, desktop versions as opposed to 250 Watt 100 Watt TDP as the set comes with a thermal design power. Characteristic of power consumption in spite of significant progress, 50 Watt TDP level compared with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, the value of power consumption is said to be two times higher.

Clock speed has been reduced a Radeon HD 5770 can accept as to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 against the clock speeds down a GeForce GTX 465 as the GeForce GTX 480M's first DirectX 11 to almost every test, the fastest mobile graphics solution to be achieved is claimed.

GeForce GTX 480M regarding yet by Nvidia picture no test results were published, though it is a high-performance notebook computers and mobile workstations to prepare Terrans Force named company, some performance figures that last uncovered. By the company published on the NVIDIA logo, where some documents, according DirectX 11 most important innovations is shown as Tessellation performance is concerned, the desktop similar to Nvidia's seriously fast to be managed and GeForce GTX 480M's, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870'e, managed to take much of a difference to the fifth floor said. Similar to other tests in the DirectX 11 supported the status did not change and at the Stone Giant 480M's fastest GeForce GTX ATI solution is 2.6 times higher performance is noted. The first test software for DirectX 11 as well as the situation changes and the Fermi-based Unigine'de 480M'in 1.5 times faster than the GeForce GTX you said. Last semester, one of the popular game open in the DirectX 11 support Metro 2033'de PhysX GeForce GTX 480M'in based measurements is 1.4 times faster, Alien vs. Predator 3, Dirt Cop 2 and STALKER DX11 games such as not changing the situation, the GeForce GTX 480M's is clearly the fastest mobile GPU is stressed. DirectX 11 also referred to as DirectX 10 performance 480M's will be between GTX 260 and GTX 275. In comparison the GeForce GTX 480M needed for this new generation 256 series of drivers, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 Catalyst 3.10 driver is used to indicate if there are benefits as well.

In addition to their own conclusions Force Nvidia Terrans company, their names published the results of some tests performed. Intel's six-core Core i7 980X processor and X58 chipset where the W88CU called 17.3-inch notebook model and carried out tests on the GeForce GTX 480M's 3DMark 2006, 18 731 points, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870'in the 15 373 points that Unigine test case of the change in scoring with 33.0 points FPS GeForce GTX 883 and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870's against to 480M 594-point scoring with 23.6 FPS said. Nvidia GeForce GTX 480M's documents prepared, the performance of the next technological solution that accordingly the claim is superior. Because the ATI solution is different from the GeForce GTX 480M's PhysX, 3DVision, CUDA C and CUDA C as well as additional features, indicating that the firm, Optimus technology and integrated graphics capabilities with Intel processors, iGPU external GPU between the load according to the automatic transmission, the only particular emphasis is on doing their own solutions. GeForce GTX 285M compared with the level of performance against the 25-watt TDP increased dramatically move up the GeForce GTX 480M, as Nvidia's fastest mobile graphics solution is able to put forward his claim. On the other hand, the GeForce GTX 480M introduction to the fastest mobile GPU, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870, the 50 watt level, the P than lower TDP, the two layers to higher processing power and lower costs with a stronger alternative will continue to be seem. With the GeForce GTX 480M's meanwhile launched flared up in the race between a laptop computer manufacturers. Clevo notebook manufacturer based in Taiwan, while introducing the first model equipped with the GeForce GTX 480M, clevo design firm based on the GeForce GTX Eurocom with 480M said it will sell the first laptop models.

Hey, at least they were somewhat honest and used Cat 10.3; on the desktop ones they used 1 year old ATi drivers.

There should be a huge gap.

Considering that the 480M costs, what, double the 5870M? If it doesn't significantly outperform the 5870M, then Nvidia has some explaining to do...

Yep, this is a typical marketing bull****. Did you see that for Metro 2033 (which btw is the most demanding game on the market today) it says 1.4 times better than MR5870? It doesn't actually give you the fps.
That's because Metro 2033 (all maxed out with DX11) gives you only about 10fps on average with MR5870CF. This means that if you use 480M SLI you'll get only about 15 fps average, which is still unplayable. Nice try nVidia...

Yeah, except at least on my 4870 the 10.3 drivers had major performance issues not present in any of the other 10.x series drivers, especially in DX10/10.1 mode. Surprise surprise, which driver set does nVidia use? Naturally they use the latest betas for their own cards...

Although the results are BS, we need to keep in mind the 5870M is only a desktop 5770, and that the GTX 480 is almost as good as the 5970.
The GTX 460M is bugging me a lot though

Honestly after the whole G84 and G86 fiasco and how instead of directly RMAing the units left the decision upto the Companies who sold them, I would never buy nvidia again. Which is why i'll be very happy with my soon ordered Gx640.

its quite funny to realise how much BS NVDIA gives ppl and there are ppl who actually fall for it.. like i did lol when i inexperienced... no more NVDIA BS and seriously , i doubt the GTX480M is even going to be close to a GTX460 even with a lower clock due to ferni's super power consumption..

But on topic, how much better (complete assumption) would gtx480m vs hd5870 MR? The first guess months ago was around 10%. Atleast thats what they did using the desktop as a pattern.

I think people are exaggerating how bad Nvidia's marketing is. While they do tricky stuff like starting the graphs at values other than 0, and it's possible they could do things like cherry-pick drivers for ATI, I doubt they would go so far as to straight-up lie.

One thing I have noticed is that they've avoided showing benchmarks for DirectX 10 performance, which suggests to me that it won't be spectacular. I've said around 15-20% elsewhere (in actual games) and I'm willing to stick by that figure.

Their DirectX 11 performance seems good, with around a 40% advantage in the games that make heavier use of tesselation, though I wonder how much this lead will change when AMD starts using its SPs to help there.

As I understand the uArch, turn tessellation off and the lead will only grow for the GF100-based cards, as Cypress/Juniper have a tesselation unit of fixed capacity that is separate from the SPs whereas GF100's tesselation is done on the same programmable units as everything else.

But yeah, I would love to see what a desktop 5870 shrunk to 100W draw could do, that would give us an apples^2 comparison.

Look in the near future for an ATi card which draws 100W, since laptops will be designed to be able to handle the 480M. That comparison will be interesting :) - will go a long way to proving whether Fermi is only faster because it draws more power.

It's not that simple. Consider a benchmark like Unigine Heaven with tessellation set to Extreme, where quite a lot - probably the majority, in fact - of the work to be done is tessellation. Presumably, what will occur in the AMD card is that for some portion of the time the SPs will simply sit idle waiting for the tessellation units to finish the job, while in GF100 they would be working the whole time on tessellation. If AMD were to use the idle SP time to help with tessellation, performance would improve.

Perhaps this will occur, though I doubt AMD will bother with new laptop cards until their next architecture. As for Fermi's power consumption, I think that question is quite clearly settled when you look at the desktop cards. Even the significantly weaker GTX 465 consumes more power than the HD 5870.

My bad, I thought it was still undecided :/ Re the 465, I read in the Anandtech review that since NV individually set Vcore for each there will be good & bad ones with regards to power consumption...

Wildly different clocks, GTX465 has same number of cores/ROPs/etc disabled as the 480M but the 480M has much reduced clocks so laptops with them don't melt :) And the 5770 desktop is about 20% faster clocked than the 5870M.

And until it *happens* I'll ignore marketing talk - "oh yeah don't buy that green mob's new card which has superior tessellation powa, we're gunna have drivers that will up ours soon, honest :) "

If it's that easy, they would've done that long ago? I heard there's some problem with the way AMD/ATI implement they're tesselation i.e. there's problem w/ architechture design. Something about the off-the-core SPs that they use causes communication problem of some sort (bandwidth problem?), so it's slower than NVDIA's. If I recall and understand the discussion correctly.

Indeed, things are likely to be a lot more complicated than they appear on the surface. No one can say what kind of a difference AMD could make with regards to tessellation performance until they actually do it.

Here is the actual article Engadget is referring to

    Hot Hardware GTX-480M

Look at the picture, the thing hardly fits in a D900 chasis. No way in hell is anyone going to be able to SLI these things.

Decent numbers though, although I don't think comparing the scores of a Dekstop CPU notebook to a stock G73 is exactly fair.

Hmm wonder if you can overclock that thing?

A lot of G73 and surely Clevo users including me game with 800/1100 overclock and can run vantage all day with it (Vantage temps topping out at 78C).
    - I chose 800/1100 since this is what my GPU is set at whenever I play BC2 lately to get my average 54 FPS with all settings high.

With that, the 480 is about 8% faster on Vantage, less depending on users. My score few months back was 9026 and I've seen higher from both G73 and Clevo users. So for GTX 480 to be impressive it would need some heavy overclocking ability.
    - But considering it takes 2 fans and fully encased in a copper heatsink body, doesn't seem much hope for that?

It takes 3 fans, unless one of those is for something else.

I assumed that one of the fans was for the i7 940?

I'd be a lot more interested in the temps running Vantage than the actual score myself.
    - Those caution high temperature parts stickers are awesome though.

Oh and noise. Those fans look really noisey.

Sidenote: la_guy_10 truly stands out as the king of morons.

Might need someone familiar with the D900 chasis to solve that one.

Well I guess you can call that success. Nvidia did manage to fit a high end GPU FERMI into a notebook. I don't like how they did it, but no denying it's there, so in the end, success. Hooray.

    - Hmm I'd like to see a comparison with a desktop. I'm guessing a desktop may win this round for quietness... and since this machine no way can be used mobile machine, even for web-browsing etc.. begs the question, why not just use a desktop?

Is the price for this machine worth it?
    - Especially since the desktop i7 seems to be way overkill considering the weak mobile GPU in comparison and current games. (BC2 uses around 35-40% of the i7 720QM, GPU definitely the bottleneck)

Price based on XoticPC for D900F
For this machine, might as well go with 1333 ram right? With XoticPC need to upgrade to i7 980 for that. Curious about that since a mobile i7 720QM supports 1333 ram.
    So with this setup
    I7 980
    6GB of 1333
    1 TB of 7200
    GTX 480M
    Windows 7 64
2 Year Parts/Labor warranty upgrade (The standard is just one year and well, if some part goes 2nd year, I can only imagine how much that will cost to replace, warranty upgrade a must IMO here).

    = $4,000

For performance less than a desktop that would cost $1,200 to build.

It's one less fan than the last gen D900 had. Though it still looks like it has the mountings for the 4th ;)

Looking carefully. It seems to me there are 2 fans for the i7 desktop. And that one fan is actually directly right on top of the GTX 480M since the 480M looks like it is 100% enclosed in a giant copper heatsink.

Build me a desktop that cost less than 1200 with 980X with X58 motherboard please.

The 980X alone is over 1000 dollars.
