Getting a T series laptop this week and am choosing between various models. I have read a lot on this forum about FireGL cards "not being good for gaming" but wonder how much a difference this makes. So I could get a T42 with the Radeon 9600 (64MB) or a T43p with a FireGL V3200 (128MB). Is the FireGL disadvantage enough so that the 9600 is going to be better than the V3200?
T-Series come with the 9600, x300, FireGL T2, and FireGL V3200. Care to rank in gaming performance?
Thanks!
PS - I've read you can mod a 9600 to a FireGL T2, anyone know if you go the other way? Like V3200 to x600?

Nonsense. The FireGL is just as good for gaming as the non-FireGL card based on the same chipset. The FireGL T2 is a 9600 indeed. The FireGL V3200 is an X600 and it's going to outperform the 9600 a bit. Sometimes a lot due to the extra 64MB of RAM. X300 is definitely not more powerful than 9600, maybe even weaker.
However, the FireGL drivers are not optimized for gaming, so you may experience some issues (maybe none at all). In any case, you can use the corresponding Radeon drivers and it will be just like you have the Radeon card.
So: X300 < 9600 = T2 < V3200 -
Thanks for you info!
Just to ease my last bit of obsessing over my purchase of the T43p, do you think that would mean that the 128MB V3200 would be better than a straight 64MB X600. There is one fujitsu model that is still nagging at the edge of my mind... -
Yes, the 128MB will be better than the 64MB, and the IBM will be better than the Fujitsu.
