Asus A8Jr 14.1-inch laptop features new ATI X2300 graphics

With the kind of elaborate cooling schemes and power supplies now demanded by top-of-the-line desktop graphics cards, we've rather given up hope of having a truly "cutting edge" graphics experience stuffed into an even somewhat portable laptop. That said, we do the best we can, and ATI's new X2300 Mobility Radeon graphics that Asus is featuring in its new A8Jr laptops sound promising, even if the main thrust of the card is enhanced performance-per-watt. Otherwise, the A8Jr looks to be well specced, but not a lot of surprises: there's a full range of Core 2 Duo processors, the Intel 945PM Express chipset, 802.11 a/b/g Intel PRO WiFi, optional Bluetooth 2.0, an ExpressCard slot, and a nice complement of video outputs, including TV-out, DVI and VGA. The computer measures 1.4 to 1.5-inches-ish thick and weighs 5.3 pounds with a 6 cell battery pack. Unfortunately, no word on display resolution on that 14.1-inch LCD, or any specifics on release date or price -- though it better be soon, 'cause this little guy is packing Windows XP, and that's not going to look so hot a week from now.

Thanks for the info on this! It's exciting indeed.
Santa Rosa is coming out in April-May, so I don't see why not.

Is the X2300 the equivalent in the 2*** lineup as the X1300 is in the 1*** lineup?

Yup thats about right, Man when they come out with the x2600 then I will jump on it (hopefully with santa rosa) Nvidia will have a similar approach to 8400=7400, 8600=7600 and so on.

Its kinda interesting to notice though that the Asus A8 series is becoming the testing ground for their GPUs-Go7700 and X1700 anyone?

I'd imagone the 2300 will be as powerful as an X1400 maybe more?

Maybe, Its hard to tell until I know the amount of pixel shaders, ram speed etc. But judging by the past that will most likely be the case.

EDIT: perhaps as powerful but definitely not more so.

Looking at the numbering, the X2300 would be the budget level GPU for the
X2k series. Without final pipelines and clock info, it's only a wild guess that it would be placed somewhere between X1300 and X1400 (I can't imagine it being wayyy faster than X1400).

*sigh* Enthusiast level GPUs still a long way to go.

I don't know why you all say this, the X300 was much better than the 9200, and the X1300 is much better than the X300.

This quote from ASUStek makes me think that it will have even better performance than the Mx1900

although if we go by the way ATI makes cards, i suppose this would make the x2300 the entry level ATI dx10 card.

so does this mean we will be seeing a fair amount of dx 10 laptop cards
    sooner than q3?

According to a site I recently saw, both nVidia and ATi were planning to release mobile DX10 solutions by the end of Q1.

Judging from past iterations of the A8 series it should at least beat a go 7600. R falls between M and S.

Er, they use quotes like this for everything more powerful than a GMA950. ;)
Doesn't mean anything, and I'm willing to bet quite a lot of money it won't beat an x1900 of any kind... ;)

Dont even try to attach a value to the letters in an asus model.

    a8jm is a 7600 go. a8ja is an x1600. a8jc is a 7300 go. x1600 is more than a 7300
the letter isnt in order of power. Im almost sure its random. I dont know of any link between the letter and the gpu other than thats the letter they choose.
