So PC Gamer's released the first Dragon Age 2 review and from all accounts it sounds like a winner. Here's a copy paste of the cliffnotes from kingjezza on the bioware forums: Choose Language | BioWare Social Network

Do you HAVE to play DAO before playing DA2? I know some games you do or should and others have a totally different story.

Excellent, thanks for posting this. I am really excited for this game, I really hope it can live up to the huge name Origins made for itself.

Rodknee, I don't think it would be an issue if you hadn't played Origins, separate plot lines of course, but I think everything would piece together much better if you had played Origins.

I almost scored a copy of DAOU for $19.98 with free shipping at the EA Store during their facebook flash deal this afternoon. I had the 360 version in my cart and when I went to checkout the coupon expired.

I believe this video shows finished in game for 20 minutes or more, the whole video is 54 minutes long though, shows quite a bit of detail into the finished game though.

Would the laptop below be able to handle Dragon Age 2 fairly well? What kind of fps would I be able to expect if I played it at high settings e.g. with DirectX 11?

    Sager NP 8130:

    15.6” 1080p Matte Screen
nVidia GeForce GTX 460M GPU with 1.5GB GDDR5
    Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM Sandy Bridge
    8GB DDR3 1333 Ram
    500GB 7200rpm SATA 300 Hard Disk Drive

    Thanks.

My honest opinon of Dragons Age of Consoles (and according to the early review) DAO2 is that it is very pretty CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE BOOK.

    Example:
YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR CAMP AND ORCS ARE INVADING
To fight with your Mage, turn to page 39
To fight with your archers, turn to page 44

No matter what you do you are always going to have to fight the ORCS invading your camp. (This is my point). The graphics are great but speaking for myself i am yearning for more open world, RPG style play. Im sure DAO2 will be nominated for Game Of The Year.

    Just my .02

Then there's great games out there for you too. Check out Two Worlds II or Divinity II: The Dragon Knight Saga.

As skeptical as I am, for some reason I have DA2 preordered. I want to be their on day one, to see what Dragon Age has really become. I need to hurry up to finish Awakenings first.

After playing the witcher, dao just seemed underwhelming.
After playing mass effect 2, dao just seemed dated.

Makes me kina reluctant to try da2

I'm leaning towards doing a '5 hours in' review for you guys, since I'm going the guinea pig route.

Why don't you wait until it is out!. These assumptions your making off of a twenty minute video (colored dialogue is stupid, The Witcher has a cooler developer?) are very basic and have no substance, I guess that is your opinion but certainly are preferential choices. The difficulty was also on normal, something you can change to a higher setting if your finding the game too easy. I am also quite sure that most enemies died within "3-4" spells in DAO, mages were very OP.

The game's said length is between ME2 and DAO, so we can expect 40-60 hours possibly depending on the player and difficulty, and now that your main is voiced you can feel more involved. It seems your asking questions that won't be answered until it is out! And please, elaborate on these "known bugs", I have heard nothing of the sort.

Next Tuesday, Feb 22nd, there will be a public demo released most likely similar to what was shown in the developer video. Will be released on all three platforms, more info here.

Im only concerned about two things- story and gameplay.
To me the witcher had both. It took you to an altogether different setting and the moral choices just made it less juvenile. The gameplay was novel too and im def looking forward to witcher 2.
Me2 just took rpg gaming to a different level. Someone commented that it is the best scifi experience in any form of media for the past years and i do have to agree with him. The story, presentation, and gameplay were just so refined and spot on , you just played it again and again.
Im hoping da2 takes some cues from these games to give us a more mature, novel story with interesting gameplay.
Nice graphics would be a plus, but i really wouldnt mind even dao sle graphics with an awesome story

trvelbug--do you think you'll be able to play DA 2 on highest settings with your laptop and get decent fps? I noticed you have the 280m. The laptop I am looking to buy has a comparable card (460m). One of the forum members estimated that I would get 30 fps on high settings with the 460m, but, if true, seems too low for DA 2.

    Thanks.

Ive actually sold my 8690 and have an 8150 with a 485m on order in prepoaration for the only game im really looking forward to paying - shogun total war 2
Imho 30fps on an rpg is kore than an acceptable framerate and i wouldnt be so worried about it. The good news is that your 8130 overclocks quite well and ive seen guys push it to 11k vantage from 7.5k stock. Thats something like a 135% overclock! And thats nit even the max as afaik no overvolting has been applied to that o/c. Tyat alone should get you at the very least5-10fps more on average.

Based on what the devs have said in Bioware forums, the DA2 engine is an improved version of DA:O's, and performance is a bit better in terms of optimization.. so at comparable settings in dx9 mode, you should get more fps then you did in DA:O. However, we don't know how DA2 will handle the dx11 stuff, since it's not been talked about much yet - that really depends on what they are setting out to do and how good they are at doing it. On bioware's blog, they're talking about the game tech at the moment ( BioWare Blog ), and an update on the dx11 stuff should be there sometime soon.

Shogun 2 is another game I am planning to play. Do you think that game will require a 485m for decent fps on high settings? Or will the 460m also be sufficient?

    Thanks.

Surprised my post got deleted but oh well. Anyway, I do hope they do not to to DA2 what they did to ME2. In my opinion, ME2 was too much shooter and not enough RPG. I would like the game to be a little faster paced than Origins but I hope they do not make it more action/adventure than RPG.

I really havent read the system requirements for shogun2 but i do like getting the best video card available when i purchase new laptops.
I think your 460 will be able to play shogun2 on high(but not max) as long as you o/c. But thats just based on pure conjecture...

Tw games are much more gpu dependent. Although i havent seen the sys requirements, im thinking of getting max at dx 9/10 and high on dx11 without aa.

I actually just picked up a copy of DAO Ultimate a week or two ago so I can work through it on PC (played it on PS3) so that I can play DA2 when my new laptop comes... I'm assuming the new one will be able to max DA2? I can only play DAO on medium on this one.

I am wish the same. And even if possible to increase a bit more the RPG aspects (long term consequences, wider variety of builds without making them redundant, etc).

da2 demo comes out feb 22. I are excited.

"Dragon Age II will be using an enhanced graphic engine and the controls are more responsive. The combat system will be same as the previous game for the PC version but different in console versions, tailored to the strengths of the control pad."

    from wikipedia.

    Yay.

That I am glad to hear, as I played the 360 demo this morning and didn't like the button mashing. Will download the PC version demo when I get home tonight.

In the short demo there did seem to be too many cut scenes though.
