I'm about to go into PC gaming and I really want to get into some FPS games. So, first of all, what FPS PC-exclsuive games are worth checking out?

And second, I know that many great FPS games that come on PC come on consoles too (I have Xbox 360), but are there any crossplatform games (PC and consoles) that are worth buying on PC over console? Maybe some reasons "why?" for these games?

Hrm... sorry I'm not aware of any exclusives.

Bioshock, CoD4, FEAR, and HL2 are all on both PC and 360.

Generally all 4 of those would be considered superior if you have a PC that can play them better than on the 360. Most would consider playing them on PC rather than the 360 due to mouse+keyboard controls vs. gamepad.

But of those 4... I'd recommend Bioshock for an amazing, creative single player experience. HL2 Orange Box has several different games. The normal HL2 game was good, but got really boring at the end (turned into same old rush of bad guys crap)... Portal was amazing and it also gives you TF2.
Haven't played CoD4... but most people say it's crazy good.
Lot of people liked FEAR, personally, I can't recommend it. Piss poor level design ruined it for me...

Was actually looking at Half Life (1). Seems quite rare to find now though. Is there anywhere I could find Half-Life?

I would second that. Start off at the beginning and get the true flavor of how the fps genre developed into what you see today. There is a ton of fun in those titles and they can be had dirt cheap now and they simply fly on today's hardware.

    *Edit*
oh, and to the question of crossplatform, I think most would agree that a keyboard / mouse setup is superior to the controller when it comes to fps games.

good call, those are great games too. Actually now that I'm thinking about it you can grab the id pack off of steam fairly reasonably which includes all the id titles.

NOLF rocks! One of the most hilarious games ever. For those that don't know... you play an undercover spy (ala James Bond) but it has great humor like Austin Powers (but better :p ). Great, great game.

Deus Ex 1/2 and System Shock 1/2 also should be mentioned!

Never played 2 only NOLF 1 and it was really good. And I wouldn't say James Bond since, well, you play Kate Archer (female character) in the game ;)

In fact Kate is my wife's User Account icon!

    F.E.A.R.

Haven't played COD4, bioshock, or HL2 yet... but I will. Oh I will.

Yeah, I just mean you play a James bond type character. i.e. spy!

But really there was a British show (don't remember the name) that was more akin to this than the Bond reference. They made a movie back around 98 or 99.

But NOLF 2 was really, really entertaining.

The whole orange box has great FPS games.

    Also COD4 and 2.

F.E.A.R. is also great, along with Unreal Tournament 3.

Majority of that game is played from the first-person perspective.

I'll continue to spur on the support for Call Of Duty 4 as well as the Orange Box.

I'd also suggest, if you plan to do any bit of multiplayer that you look into the Battlefield series.

My vote would be for Doom 3 + expansion. Full res, in a darkend room with surround sound will have you jumping out of your skin...

    It's and oldie but goodie.

    Just my 2p
