The A8Js I just ordered will be my first real opportunity to enter the PC-gaming scene. So, some recommendations would be nice. A couple of RPGs, some non-RPGs, perhaps a beautiful game just to show off with, old gems. What should I look for.![]()

fable and oblivion are really good rpgs
FEAR, HL2, quake 4, doom 3, are all good fps
battlefied 2, 2142,CS, fear combat are good online fpsers
warhammer 40k, C&C are good RTS
black and white 2 is just fun, where you play god
nfs mw, gtr2 are both good racing games -
Beyond Good & Evil. It's not the newest or flashiest, but it does look *really* sweet, and much more stylistic and polished than just about every other game on the market. Proof that good graphics is about more than just high poly-counts.
It's also a **** good game. -
Thanks guys.
Anything else? Maybe some survival horror recs? -

FEAR, Battlefield 2 and Half Life 2: First Person shooters.
Oblivion: very good RPG (offline)
Need for Speed: good driving game.

Quake 4 is a really fun run-and-gun shooter.
I'm disappointed Far Cry hasn't been mentioned yet; the game is gorgeous and the Go 7700 should be able to run it at native with max settings and HDR. Even without HDR, though, it's a good-looking game and even better: it's insanely good. In my opinion it's probably the best FPS ever made.
Unreal Tournament 2004 won't push your GPU, but it's a lot of fun and it's a pretty good-looking game if dated.
World of Warcraft goes without saying. Set aside some time for that one.
While I'm loathe to recommend it just because it's so overrated and everyone squeals over it, Half-Life 2 is pretty good. Not great, not amazing, but a pretty solid game. -
horror survival? hmmm, try the suffering
and Doom 3 is FREAKING HORRIFYING!! and it is survival
also, silent hill 4: the room is a pretty good horror survival -
Oblivion, BF2/2142, HL2/EP1, three of my favroite RTS's are StarCraft, Homeworld 2, and Age of Mythology, Black and White 2 is real fun.

It's not out yet, but I played the demo and Medieval 2: Total War seriously rules. Just seeing thousands and thousands of soldiers crashing into each other and battling it out gives me a mental orgasm. I love it.
And a big thumbs up to Jalf for mentioning Beyond Good & Evil. Good on ya brother! -
Half-Life 2 (for sure),
Need for speed most wanted (or a new Carbon ... to be released)
Leisure Suit Larry 7 (because we shouldn't forget about the old-and-non-xtreme-G4m3rZ-qual!ty-games)
Company of Heroes (really interesting and nice looking)
Call of duty 2
.. and a few more
I forgot about the Civilization IV.
Really interesting one -
Still waiting for Bioshock though... Part FPS, part RPG, part survival horror. Katic, if you ever played the System Shock games back in the 90's you will want this game.

half life 2, oblivion, unreal tounament 2004

Total Annihilation?
(not to be confused with TA:Kingdoms.)
The best RTS yet, it's a bit old (1997?), but still OMG FUN in multiplayer!
There's nothing quite like it yet, but that'll change in about 1-2 months from now when Supreme Commander gets here!
Far Cry is pretty nice. Love both Half-lifes. Oblivion was fun. -

My top 5 games:
-Far Cry (I've been playing it since it came out - it never gets old and there are a TON of mods for it. http://farcry.filefront.com )
-Half-Life 2
-Unreal Tournament 2004 (a little old, but always fun)
-Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (RPG) - incredible storyline, really well rounded.
-The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay: it's a shame this game doesn't get more attention, as it is very different and provides a really unique experience. It is stressful on the video card so it will give your Go7700 a run for the money. -

Operation: Flashpoint
Golden Sun 1 & 2
Fallout 1 & 2
Advance Wars
Tie Fighter
A little bit of an obscure list, but these five games have given me the most fun of any games ever. -
Perhaps not the 5 greatest of all-time, but I really enjoyed all of these.
Far Cry
Unreal Tournament 2004
Rise of Nations
Rome: Total War
Sim City 4 -
I've seen one of my old stand-bys left out:
DukeNukem 3d. I still bust that game out and blast through it about 2-3 times/year. Many expansions/add-ons available, too. It won't tax anything on your system, except maybe your patience trying to run it in XP. -
Operation Flashpoint (the overall best ever for me) + Armed assault is coming out soon in Europe. Runs fast and has great mods (from WW2 to StarWars) - unmatched playgrounds (hundreds of km^2), good physics and war experience.
Fear and Fear Combat
Halflife and HL2
And a new horror survival I tried is called Penumbra (techdemo only for now) - very scary (more than FEAR in its best moments) - engine is absolutely great and you have to survive using your brain, not weapons. Very promising. (I suggest googling Penumbra and downloading 170MB or so tech demo).
Cheers,

I don't have a top 5 list (I've only played 2 PC games proper lol) but I know I'll be getting Resident Evil 4 when its released in December. Lets hope it doesn't get the same kind of crappy coding Oblivion got
-
oh man Operation Flashpoint, how could i forget that?

I played VBS1 (The optimised version sold to various military organisations around the world) against the Army Reservists at my local base. It was so funny hearing the Officers go off at the enlisted guys for for shooting them out of the pilot seats of their own choppers before stealing them. -
These are my favorite:
America's Army
GTA: 3, Vice City, and San Andreas
Command and Conquer Generals
Medal of Honor(s)
yea... -
Thanks for the info on Penumbra, ikovac. Sounds promising.
Here's the link to their site: http://frictionalgames.com/penumbra/
Check out the minimum system requirements in their forum:

If my desktop will run it, I'll check it out. -
I have to throw in two "old school" games:
Heretic II
Hexen II
Both play very well on new systems. Heretic I and Hexen I can be played using Dosbox.
I've been trying out the demo for Black & White 2. Kind of like Sims on steroids. Interesting, but the demo seems mostly be learning to play and not actually playing (at least that part of it is long and drawn out, but it has good info on playing). Kind of a drag. Slow on my NB, but fine on my desktop. I won't buy a game that's just a an intro to how to play or mostly video. Need to get a good feel for it before plunking bucks down. -
My laptop is in transit (actually as I type this out, I am simultaneously on Dell Canada chat to get specifics on how I will actually recieve the laptop) with a Geforce 7400 Go installed. It will be able play games, with some sacrifice of graphic detail in the most recent ones.
It's been an agonizing wait, so I've thought of a couple games I'd install immediately after the laptop gets into my hands. I only have three I'd like to emphasize; far for it for me to sound like a broken record and repeat what has been said of the popular titles.
1) The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay
A big shout-out to Chaz for pointing this game to everyone. I also attest to the pure awesomeness of this title (yes, awesomeness is a word in common usage). Amazing voice acting, plot, fluid animations/detailed graphics and very satisfying melee combat, make this an easy recommendation for any FPS fan.
2) Max Payne and Max Payne 2
Solid third person shooter all around, and renown its classy noir plotline (thick with exposition and intriguing developments) and for the origin, or at least, popularization, of the " bullet time" mechanic in videogames. Also, due to its mostly narrow environments, it should run easily on many a laptop.
3) Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
A gripping story, accentuated with grandoise BGM and brought to life by very convincing voice actors (I like my games with a tinge of authenticity to them), makes Dreamfall a requisite experience for any gamer that enjoys an entralling narrative with their videogames. Though admittedly light on gameplay, the story carries the game so well, you'd be hard pressed to notice in the middle of it all. -
Guys. It isn't necessary to recommend "must-play PC games" that are available on console systems.
-
It is if the person in question doesn't have those consoles.
Or if he prefers the PC version for one reason or another. -
Well this topic wasn't made with non-mes in mind!
Though I actually never got around to playing Beyond Good and Evil. Probably should.
But as far as GTA, Max Payne, Resident Evil 4 and other HUGE console games ... I've already played them or know enough about them to not be interested.
I'm sad for the lack of space sims ... Hasn't anyone around here played Privateer or Wing Commander?
It also looks like there's a lack of FPRPGs ... -
Cheers,

Hmm, must play games..well heres my selection of games that are at the top of their game in their genere.
rpg: well saddly, aside from the anchient FF7 pc port, offline rpgs have kinda sucked for the pc. Oblivion was a gorgious sandbox game, but as an rpg, the game play was the worst. Online, I would go with WoW or Guildwars. Both are easy to get into. Otherwise buy a PS2 and get all the final fantasy games and xenosaga 3. (if you have a gameshark, get 1 and 2 and cheat just so you can watch the 24 hours of movies.)
Driving: need for speed underground 2. mostwanted cops are fun, but the tracks in underground 2 are better. Carbon could be a winner too.
FPS: Doom3 rocks with the scare factor simular to the original doom (lights going out, panels opening up or doors busting down with monsters), but Half Life 2 is a clear winner. Unreal 2k4 for multi play, nothing comes close here. I have given up on any more online fps games untill unreal 3.
I WOULD say tribes 2 all the way..but its kind of hard to play now.
None of the above: Beyond Good and evil is a great action platformer. battle for middle earth 2 is a great RTS. Black and white 2 is a great god sim. -
diablo 2 lord of destruction ( requires D2 to play)
titan quest
counterstrike 1.6/source
everquest2 + expansions
TES: morrowind/oblivion -
For me:
- Deus Ex (best game ever)
- FarCry
- Half-Life 2
- GTA Vice City
- Need For Speed Porsche
K. -
Counter-Strike: Source
-
Fear fps
Oblivion rpg
Runescape mmorgp
Wolfenstein Et. (online first person shooter)
Fear is great offline.. never played online much..(our comp is a really really weak one.. too much online lag).
Oblivion because if nothing else its eye candy.. (plus since its online.. you can download mods to alter pretty much ANYTHING in game you don't like.. leveling system, vampirism, w/e)
Runescape- strangly addictive but, enough jerk other players and graphics that will make you appreciate anything else you play. I played it and got to lvl 96.. I enjoy the game because it does have alot of things i find fun.. but, it also has alot of bad things which make me truly appreciate oblivions graphics and other things.
Wolfenstein Enemy territory. While everyone obsesses over how "great" halo is I personally don't like it.. online or off.. to me its just an over hyped mediocre shooter.. I played wolfenstein et.. loved it.. played halo few minutes.. and went right back to wolfenstein.. Et Is free.. its fun and can last for hours

Hmm let me see...
40k Warhammer DOW - Dark Crusade (or any other previous series)
COD2
BF2
NBA Live Series (07 was dissapointing because pcs dont have the next gen graphics like xbox)
Lock On - pretty fun game actually -
I'm not sure if you can buy it anymore but Grim Fandango told one of the most memorable stories I've ever experienced (in any medium). It's a 3D adventure game from Lucas Arts (made before they learned the words "star wars" and forgot the word "quality") and absolutely worth a download, if you're willing to hunt for a torrent.
Speaking of downloads, Valve's Steam offers some pretty awesome NON-HALF-LIFE (!) games. Darwinia and Defcon come to mind - they're both from the UK developer Introversion, and have amazing retro-graphics, great atmosphere and are fun to boot. Check them out! -
I like,
S.W.A.T
HALO 2
DOOM 3
MS FLIGHT SIMULATOR
GTA 3 and above.
Thats PC tho ..
ALL sports games are console only for me!! -
