Just my thoughts. -
The minimum requirements are quite low though and its a 2006 game
Minimum Requirements:
Microsoft Windows XP SP2 / Vista
PC with 1 GHz equivalent or higher processor
256 MB of system RAM for Windows XP SP2
14 GB available hard disk space
DVD-ROM drive
32 MB DirectX 9 compatible video card required
Sound card, speakers or headphones required for audio
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
56.6 Kbps or better modem for online play
Recommended Requirements:
VISTA - 512 MB RAM -
It plays well on High settings (30FPS+) on my 8600M GT. I imagine you could get 30 FPS at Medium/Medium Low settings.

Even though i do have 4gb ram and gonna be running it on lower res compared to you, its my gpu thats always the bottleneck. Im still hoping to try it on high settings though. The service pack 1 for FSX apparently speeds things up
Are you using a joystick?
I really need a new game to play after work. WoW was my other option but i dont wanna pay fees for something i dont cant play much. Lately ive just been playing Warhamme Dawn of war and CS:S but im getting sick of it -
Well you can always try it and see if it works. If it doesn't you can get a refund right? (On the game that is...)
-
Out of curiosity, what got you into flying? People think I'm a bit off since I enjoy flying... lol. -
Try the demo first

I used to play flight sims and flight shooting games a long time ago, back when joysticks still used gaming serial ports and on PS1. Flight simulator x looks relaxing compared to the violence packed games ive been playing
They have removed the demo from the Microsoft site, i actually tried downloading it beforehand. Any alternatives? -

The microsoft website must be refusing my connection. The gamershell link is working, thanks!

Your CPU and RAM should help too, as FSX is fairly CPU intensive... Also, the full version is up to service pack 2, which helped performance, so the demo is a worst case scenario, and the full game should be noticeably better...... good luck!

It should play at medium high settings fine. It played on my GMA 950 on medium low settings- a little choppy at airports and dense stuff.
Other specs...
Centrino Core 2 Duo T7200
2GB 533Mhz RAM
GMA 950 w/128MB VRAM
14" LCD at 1440x900. -
I put everything on high except for the airport traffic bar but the graphics still looked like crap? It didnt really lag. I think there was something wrong with the resolutions. I set it to my native res 1280x800 and it looked like it didnt fit in and all weird.
I put it on ultra high the thing lagged and still looked like crap. Even the game menus looked like it was low quality
Might need the service pack to fix this, it was just a demo after all -
I play it with my GMA 950 with many of the settings set at medium. The one thing that happens with my game play isnot really too much lag but the ATC and menu labels take a ridiculously long time to load. It can be frustrating when trying to follow the controllers directions when ya cant read em. I'm hoping my next PC will play the game without any problems.

Any other flight simulator/shooting games i should try?
Im will be using my hdtv as my external monitor, this should make the graphics quality and experience alot better -

How did you manage to get 30FPS+? I have almost the same specs as you, except a T7250 rather than a T7500, and 1280x800 rather than 1440x900. Nontheless, the lower resolution should get me better frame rates. Is there any particular settings combination? Do you have autogen, and scenery complexity at max? and these framerates, are they in big cities such as Chicago, airports such as O'Hare?
I got FSX a couple of days ago, and performance is superb when flying around little towns with most things maxed out, but when I jump to big cities and such, it drops to around 12 to 13 fps, and sometimes jumps around from 15 to 19 which I find fine sometimes at the ground.
I am also getting certain mad stutters, like the game pauses for a couple of seconds, and everything sound and everything stutters so bad, as if the GPU couldn't take it, what drivers are you using with your 8600M GT?
Thanks in advance, I'd really appreciate the help. After I got FSX and saw all the sweet effects, it's hard to go back to FS9, even if I can run it maxed out with amazing frames. -
Trying the demo would be good to get a feel for it but just remember it should be slower than the performance you will get on the actual game. If FSX does not work for you I would recommend Flight Simulator 2004 as it still looks very good and it will perform excellently on the 8400m.
Here is a video of it running with some info on FSX:

I think this card is with 128mb though. Hope it helps.
