For FPS's - mouse+kybrd, joystick or controller?

Which set up is the best for playing FPS's on a PC?

I have only ever used a mouse+keyboard set up and using W, A, S & D to move is okay, but then having to press C or X to crouch or lie down is not instinctive to me so I was wondering if people preferred another setup instead. Any thoughts anyone?

Personally, I use a keyboard+mouse. I used to console game all the time and loved the XBOX controller for FPS. The other days I was playing some console title after PC gaming for a while and I must say that the keyboard+mouse combo spanks a controller!

 

So, Imark84l, is there a 'best' mouse for gaming?

Mouse and Keyboard, no question about it. I've found that one keyboard is pretty much like another, as long as it's a relatively good quality one, but I've just recently moved from a MS optical mouse (several years old, optics were starting to die) to a Logitech G5 and there's a world of difference. It's much nicer on the hands if you're playing for a long time, and it's lore reliable in terms of pointer skipping/jumping. I also have a Razer Krait for my laptop (got it on sale for $35) and the click sensitivity is much nicer than a cheaper mouse.

 

From the little bit of experience I have trying to play FPS on consoles--I'd have to say I feel that the mouse/keyboard setup is the most intuitive. That's not to say that some guys out there are really good with the controller though. I'm sure with some practice you could get good enough with whatever input device you choose.

As for gaming mice--I have both the Razer Copperhead and Logitech G7. They are both excellent and will give you some nice performance upgrades over the standard mouse.

 

I'm old fashion, I still prefer to play FPS games with keyboard and mouse. I've seen some people play Halo so good on the Xbox as if they were playing on keyboard + mouse.

 

mouse and keyboard unless im playing need for speed or gta, then i have to use the ol usb ps2 clone controller

 

id have to agree with streather there are only one or two games that i would play using a joystick such as gta ...i jus cant stand playing fps on a controller (i will make the exception for halo1,2 and 3 when it comes out )

 

You know, I couldn't answer that. I think it changes from person to person. Maybe there is a hard core gamer that could answer the question better, I am more of a casual gamer.

 

Mouse+Keyboard for me

On the face of it, what the 2 analogue sticks do in FPS; alternating movement and strafing is good. But for me I find the keyboard + mouse more intuitive and accurate. I just find analogue sticks to be too loose. I also can't quite get the hang of press left stick for crouch in Halo (unless some remap it). Saying that, when I see some mates on their 360s and PS2s, they look quite good. A cross-platform contest would be interesting

Ironic when it does happen, the game studio will turn the mouse accuracy down (can't remember name of upcoming title)

 

Mouse + Keyboard will offer you the greatest degree of precision and accuracy. I got very good with Halo2 on Xbox, but the joystick is no match for the mouse in making those pinpoint headshots across a map. Halo2 compromises this problem by subtly auto-aiming for the player---ever notice how your targeting reticle moves more slowly when it is red and tries to stay on the target? Sometimes it even messed me up, because I would be dueling this one guy with BR and his teammate would run across my line of fire, forcing my aim to fall off my primary target and chase after him. It's subtle, and no you can't turn it off.

 

Mouse and keyboard because it is faster, more accurate and comfortable.

 

yes you can. go to options and you can turn off auto aim.

as for me I also prefer the keyboard and the mouse for most games. but I think that if you play with a controller long enough you can be very good. I played halo 2 for about a year before I realized how good I had gotten with the controller. my strategy sucks, but I was hella accurate and could dance around most of my friends. but I haven't played in almost a year and last week I had my butt handed to me by everybody.

 

Without a doubt, the mouse and keyboard seems to be the fastest and most accurate setup for me.

 

There is technically a 'best' mouse for gaming but it's not as big a factor as actual decent skill. I play all my games on a budget optical mouse - I don't have any problems really.

And - joystick?? How could anyone play an fps with a joystick...I remember when I first played Quake at a friends house....I was horrified when he told me it was controlled using the keyboard and mouse. I had to go get a gamepad just to play it...
