I started playing CoD4 again last night just for the heck of it, and I got my *** handed to me quite a few times in TDM... Most of the time I don't even know how I died, I'm guessing that's the sniper's doing. And other times, when I come face to face with an opponent, I usually lose as well... I'm here asking you all decent FPS players, especially CoD players, how do you do well in CoD?

in MW2 you get a replay which is a good idea.
i suppose the more you play the better guns you get so you can get your own back. also dont forget there are lots of hackers in both games and even if you are well hidden they know exactly where you are as you light up like a christmas tree so you have no chance. -

Memorize the maps. Memorize the "enemy path", so you always know where and when to expect your opponet. In certian maps, the enemy spawns, and reaches a "landmark" at the same time every game. they run in the same direction, and you know they'll be there. It's about memorizing the "generic" patterns....and be sure not to follow these patterns yourself!
-
And as far as hackers go, they aren't problems in the servers that I play in. Just go to ones that have Punkbuster and have a good set of admins.
In order to get better though, just keep playing. It might not seem like it, but I'm sure you are slowly getting better. Get used to the weapons you like, then figure out the maps, and proceed to dominate.
Also, I stopped playing COD4 for a while and mostly played Counter Strike: Source. While they have their differences, I feel like CS:Source really helped my reaction time, so when I got back to playing COD4 I have been doing better. Any one else feel the same? -
I find the trick to many FPS games is not to 'try harder', 'be l33t', or 'owning the map', but rather it's just to enjoy the game. If you're having fun and are getting a decent amount of kills each time, you may find yourself at the top spot and not even realize it.
-
Here's a few tips from me
1. Move slowly... and keep your speaker high so you can hear footsteps.
2. Use noobtube and rockets a lot
3. Use hearbeat sensor to look about.
4. Use perks like bing which allow multiple attachments for more firepower...
and u should do well... -

With FPS games you are either good or you never will be. It starts and ends with hand eye coordination and reflexes.
But getting killed at first is not a problem, because other plays know the maps and ideal movement patterns and shooting locations. -
Practice practice practice! Don't rush into the firefights; take your time and try to figure out exactly where your opponents are. I've always been one to take the long way around a map (long in comparison) to flank my opponents. COD4 has pretty predictable paths/spawn points, so based on where I spawn I will know exactly where to expect the enemy to come from. It's not completely a question of "memorizing" a map, just practice practice practice and you'll get the hang of the game dynamics down pretty good.
-
some matches there are so many noobtubes going off its more like a fireworks display than a FPS.......
ohh well -
knowing the map is huge. knowing where people tend to spawn, congregate, camp, etc. is a major advantage. you're probably getting sniped because you're not taking the covered routes (which are sometimes hard to know unless you play a good amount).
-

I will admit, in MW2 I do love Killing people with the javelin. Oh, and the grenade launcher at point blank range. And then there's the tactical knife.... good times....
-
.
Seriously though practice fast aiming on random stuff. pick something and shoot it.
Watch better players. Youll notice they are always running and most of the time being super aggressive. Alot of times their aiming is average like me but they catch alot of people not paying attention and only looking at what infront of them.
Lead your aim i think its called.
If you hear someone wait.
Watch out for players who love to camp. Find camping spots and pre fire or nade.
Control a area. A house for example.
Watch out for P90 bullet spam, noob tubes, and last stand.
Use nades/flash/stunns/claymores/C4 like they are going outta style.
Last but not least try to play against good players. It will raise your game up for sure.
Im a super agressive player so i get alot of kills. Only thing holding me back is being able to stop running and aim fast enough to kill someone face to face whos walking. Me sucking at that results in a decent amount of deaths. Ill get good enough one day. Ping may also play a part. -
Dual M93 Raffica's + FMJ.....DM is all your's.

Play at least 20 hours a week for at least 3 weeks. Depending on how good you are naturally will determine how long it will take for you to "get good."
Use headphones, turn up the sound, and pay close attention.
Be quiet. Crouch, and move slowly. "The quieter you are the more you can hear."
Use a bolt action or semi automatic weapon. You will get owned even harder to start, but this will make you a much better player. Eventually, you'll laugh at full autos and "noob tubes" because a single, powerful, accurate shot > lots of inaccurate shots.
Learn to take cover and avoid fire (strafing, diving, etc). You will pick this up on your own when you play 20+ hours a week.
Finally, play SD. TDM is for winding down and for noobs. SD will make you value your life more, since it's one per 5 minute period. It will also help you learn where people tend to camp.
I haven't been big on the COD series since COD2, but I was in CAL-IM for COD2... -

Guess all answers sums up to practice! I'll get it to after my final exams are over
haha

To the OP- I agree with the others about learning the maps and how enemies usually become distributed through them. I'm actually in your exact same position, as I just started playing MW2 a couple weeks ago, and it's extremely difficult!
One thing that seems to have worked for me is, when starting out (since you don't know the maps, spawn points, etc.), play an objective-type game- it'll cause the firefights to be clustered around the objectives, and so you tend to have less of a chance of being picked off just running through the map. -

CoD Secrets:
1. Classes
Give considerable thought to your class layouts. Aside from your skill, which goes a long way towards defining how good you are, this is all you can change to improve your performance. There are *definitely* good class layouts and bad class layouts.
1a. Complementing Layouts
Some perks / weapons give you additional benefit when you use them together.
cold-blooded pro + ninja pro goes a long way towards making you stealthy. they are more effective as a whole than the sum of their parts. get a silenced weapon and you won't show up on the radar, ever. sometimes using bling pro makes sense with certain loadouts here so you can get another attachment (like a scope) on your weapon.
same thing with marathon + lightweight (+ commando pro). These perks together give you an additional advantage in several maps: super-fast map traversal. Use a pistol with the tactical knife attachment and you will be even faster - you can start dodging bullets and zigzag in and knife enemies, and get to waypoints faster than everyone else.
the thermal scope and smoke grenades can be effective. people think they are covered because of the smoke, meanwhile you can see right through it. brutal combo when done properly.
riot shield + throwing knife can be effective since you can insta-kill someone standing in front of you while he contemplates how to handle you while barely giving up your defense. pulling out your secondary weapon is near-useless in this scenario.
In each class, try to focus on speed, stealth, or firepower (riot shielding / sniping with a sniper rifle is not recommended for common folk)
when you focus on speed as your edge, for example, you leave yourself open somewhere else (in terms of firepower / stealth), but you will be more effective just taking an edge and playing it than you will trying to get decent-all-around classes.
2. engaging enemies
-if you are doing stealth, don't focus on flanking. try laying in the brush and letting your enemies walk right up to you. knife them or fire. still flank when possible.
-if you are focusing on speed, try to flank to get the jump on people. engage crouched at least, if not prone.
-if you are focusing on firepower, you will probably be fighting head on a lot, since you won't have the speed necessary to move around your enemies. insta-prone when an enemy pops out in front of you. get used to that. they will usually continue to aim at where your body was for a moment, and your accuracy will increase as a result of being prone. use stopping power.
-use flashbangs and grenades when breaching (when you know someone is inside). not enough people do this but it is highly effective.
3. Learn the maps
(like everyone said, just do it. it makes you more effective). -
i disagree with running around, run from 1 point to another not everywhere like point A to B or this to that house, chances if u keep running you cant draw ur gun as fast.
also ALWAYS ALWAYS keep your eyes moving for any movement in your field of view, if a square on the right moves start shooting it, chances are its an enemy crawling or something.
really practice and just patience. lol -
I agree with most things said, like memorizing the maps, knowing spawns/paths people take, aiming quickly, etc.
A few things that I think help me out:
I usually go back for revenge on the person who killed me, and they are usually in the same area. So if there are were only a few enemy players left in one spot and I kill them, I try and rush away from that area and get behind them, before they find me.
If "cornered" by someone camping, sniping, or a group, I like to shoot a smoke (if I have one) one way, then run the other way. I almost never get killed doing this, and when I do, it's usually from a different player(s) that went around and I run right towards them.
Get used to jumping through windows or over things, not climbing. If you can do this, you can usually run back around/inside and get them as they are climbing over.
If someone is shooting at you from a distance and you can hide behind something, go prone, and randomly jump back up and shoot them. Just remember where they were and aim quickly.
Know when to reload, there is nothing worse than going into a fight and get caught reloading.
EDIT:
-
And if you're using cars/trucks as cover, try to ensure that they are utterly destroyed before you do so, as enemies can make your cover explode and kill you with less than a full clip from most weapons, or a single well placed explosive.
-
If you know the maps you may not need to be a good player, if you know where to be and when you can catch people off guard a lot, I wouldnt say camp and wait cause thats not fun, but strategically position your self so you have cover advantage, way harder to get a kill if theres little to shoot at.
-
seeing as COD4 and MW2 are VERY arcady, you just have to pull the trigger first. I have lost many a life by sleeping with the trigger.
-
There are many types of playing styles, and most of them are effective in at least some way. While some people play aggressive, I prefer stealth/camping. Sometimes when camping, it is better to wait until your opponent is farther away, so it's harder to figure out where you are. I've let many enemies live in order to keep my cover a secret. If you think your cover's blown, it probably is. Reposition yourself to catch any enemies trying to attack your old spot. Be patient.
-
Turtle Beach Headsets + MP5 + Smaller Maps = I own me some noobs. (CoD4, not MW2).
I could write a freaking book on how to better at CoD, lol.
Edit: Oh yeah, just reached 2.01 KDR.
Another Edit: Don't want to hear any negative things! But I play on the console. Couldn't bring myself to buy the PC version. -
I just run in and kill stuff. If I run into an enemy I can't knife, I start spraying and jump towards their head while spraying. Everyone has their own style so it's hard to give a definite answer. I rely completely on speed though for my scores so if you give me anything heavier than a assault rifle, then my KDR goes down dramatically. My recent gameplay has been using a tac knife with Marathon, Lightweigh, and Commando and I usually get a KDR of 7 or 8. People constantly forget that any shotgun can make that style worthless.
If you want easy kills and be the type of person I implicitly go after:
1) SMG or Akimbo anything with Stopping Power and Steady Aim
2) Thumper, grenade launcher, grenades with Danger Close
3) Camping -
AmazingGracePlayer Notebook Deity
-
also remember to use akimbo weapons like my dual G18... its super spam and with FMJ... it owns... managed to get a few headshots from all the spray...
-
But anyways, it's actually not that hard, if you keep a few things in mind.
*Takes a DEEP Breathe*
1. Cover: Cover plays a big part in this game. It's not like Halo, where you can run about and not worry because you have shields, you die much faster here. You always want cover, but not flimsy cover (Plywood, thin walls, aluminum, etc). You want something like (Steel, thick concrete, etc). Always try to have the above ground, as long as you have cover. If you are on top of the stairs, and someone is coming up, you have the advantage, because you have 2 options. Peek over the top, and kill them, or back away and let them come to you, which brings me to my next point.
2. Let them come to you: Now I am not saying camp. Camping is bad, and..well....don't do it. But better yet, play defensively. Hang out in a spot where you think they will be (this will be in #4), and let them come to you. But remember, do not stay in that spot for long (around 10-20 secs is good). That gives you enough time to pick anyone off, and make your way forward. But DO NOT push to far, especially if you are playing a game like Domination, because it will push the spawns around (like if you cap all 3 flags DO NOT DO THIS! Because it will make the other team spawn all over the place).
3. Stay with you team: To a degree. Don't go off trying to flank there whole team unless you think you are good enough. But stay near/around your team. But DO NOT bunch up, crowding corridors, all ontop of one roof, etc etc. This is how people get those really cool quad kills for there "epic" montages! Staying near your team will also insure you will have a fair share of action, because your team is always near the enemy. ALWAYS watch your flank, for those few people who do like to run behind your team. As well as ALWAYS watch your corners/rooftops, basically anywhere you would think to chill out for a bit and wait for enemy's, there will be someone.
4. Spawn Trap/Know There Route: This one took me ages to master, some people even longer. But once you know it, you can best any team, and I will try to explain it. See, wherever your team is, the other team usually spawns somewhere near them, but mainly farther away where the team is not. See Diagram below:
So as you can see, the enemy spawn will be different if your whole team where to rush them. Now they wont always spawn far away, they will spawn at the same place if there is only 1 or 2 people left from your team in there original spawn point. So if you are with your team, and there is a few enemy's where you are pushing up into, there is almost always going to be a few that are opposite of where you are.
I left out ALOT of stuff, and I know my explaining skills are sub-par, but I wasn't really looking for A+ effort.
Maybe one day I will get around to writing that book.Attached Files:

+rep for that! and I gave +rep for others as well, but I can only give so many in 24 hours, so have to wait till tomorrow to give more! I tried playing TDM on Crossfire today, and improved from my past few days' 1:8 KDR to roughly 1:1 KDR! I'm slowing remembering all the CoD4 maps again. Also played a game of FFA on Rust and had a 1:3 because opponent got quite a few Pave Low kills on me, otherwise I did pretty well running and gunning with my SCAR.
-
great points xTank Jones16x. Knowing the spawn points and where to expect the opposing team to be has helped me tons while playing this game.
A few more tips...
With regards to running around the map: although running gets you places faster (for the impatient players) and closer to the action quicker, you cannot shoot while running. There is about a 1 second delay between running and walking for your weapon to come up and be ready to fire; one second is all it takes your opponent to kill you if his weapon is already up! I used to get caught with my gun down running around corners, down corridors, into firefights, etc etc.
- Run when you know the coast is clear or you notice a teammate running through an area without being engaged.
- Run if you are being overwhelmed and need to fall back.
- If you need to run, run where you can find cover quickly to bring your weapon up without being in the line of fire.
With regards to spraying: keep in mind that the longer you hold down on that trigger, the lower your accuracy will become. Recoil will cause your weapon to loose its' aim, and you'll end up shooting the lights on the roof instead of your opponent straight ahead. Short, controlled bursts are the way to go, and always try to use your sights (if playing Hardcore Mode). Your sights help increase your accuracy and decreases the effects of recoil.
i'll add some more when I have some more time! Hope this help.. -
my secrets always been run and gun. If you can't beat them die in a flash of blazing glory.

Some great tips here, Mine is to stick to specific servers and make a mini community with the regular people on it, you get to know people and their style soon enough. (on COD4 anyway)
-
Camping if you're going purely for kill to death ratio.
-
-
I use P90 a lot. Have extreme conditioning all the time. My strategy is always to get into the fight quickly and move a lot. Find good spots to defend or attack and stick to it. I'm usually at top 3.
-
My advices are:
1. Choose the proper weapon for each map. You have 5 customisations.
2. There are very good combos for perks and weapons. Here's my favourite combos.
Assult:
-RPD with Grip
-Perk 1 - None cus of the Grip
-Perk 2 - Double Tap
-Perk 3 - Last Stand
Stealth:
-RPD with Sliencer
-Perk 1 - Claymore
-Perk 2 - Double Tap
-Perk 3 - Last Stand -
I've always been "run and gunner". I just run toward my enemies and wreak havoc. This gets you a lot of kills, but plenty of deaths as well.
-
it depends on map, experience etc etc
generally if you're noob try play some medium-heavy weapon(lighter and heavier ihmo are for someone who dead as much times as he know where shot, sit etc etc)
my fav weapon ak47u

Rust is the one map I always get a great KDR and win most of the time. -
lol@automatic weapons on Rust.
I use my Intervention sniper bling'd with silencer and FMJ, get up to the top of the central tower, drop a tactical insertion as soon as I get there, go prone, and have a field day. If someone manages to kill me, as unlikely as that is, I spawn right back up there and drop another tactical insertion.
I've gone 30-3 that way before. -
Find a 24/7 Broadcast server and play there all the time. It's an easy map to learn. I have been almost exclusively playing that map for about a year now, and I'm pretty good now.
