For those who play games on laptops like WoW, how come I dont see people mentioning laptops from Alienware or Voodoo. I know Voodoo laptopss prices are pretty high, but the alienware laptops are as low as 999 dollars and they're built for gaming. I was just wondering because I want to buy one for WoW too.
-
-
It's because there are brands that are as good/better AND cheaper than Alienware/Voodoo.
Why pay more for the same performance? -
You don't need a Alienware laptop to play WOW.
-
Because Alienware is just a name with little substance behind their notebooks.
A Dell Inspiron 1520 or Vostro 1500 at the same price would be much better than said $999 Alienware since it would have a better graphics card, the nVidia 8600GT instead of last generation's Go 7600.
And oh... anything can run WoW anyways. /end rant. -
Because WoW isn't a very demanding game and you don't need high-end laptops from Alienware and Voodoo to play it. Besides, Alienware and Voodoo are the two most expensive brand out there... You could buy a Sager for the same spec at a much lower price.
-
Alienware, and VooDoo are priced sooooo high because of the name. Like right now, you can get an Alienware Area 51 laptop on Ebay for 1,000 bucks, but it still has the 6600 GT in it... which is waaayyyyyyy out of date.
So why pay more for less, when you can pay less and get more? -
Wow a lot of people replied at the same time!
-
yep, got my asus g1, and it beats any alienware hands down (when i got that is).
-
Oooo luckily I didn't buy any from alienware yet. My bro was all telling me that it's the best choice (he knows a lot more about computers than I do). So if I were to buy a laptop that could play wow at half settings than the default and net searching or listening music... would a asus g1 do? Or is there any recommended one out there that I should look at? My price range is about 2000 dollars.
-
loL my connection Lagged so i posted the same reply twice... Gotta love internet.
-
-
If you need to play WoW on HALF SETTINGS.....the G1S is not worthy of your ownership, heh. It's 512MB 8600M GT is too good for you.

I sometimes stop in the alienware forums, its hard to explane to some of those people that they are paying out the bun hole for the name brand and not for the quality.
They have some very rarely seen "novlties" like a 1920x1200 resolution 15" screen.... but who the heck would want that anyways????
asus g1s is probably one of the best gaming notebooks around tied with the G2S if you dont mind the bigger screen (supposed to be better quality screen, and better for movies)
The Asus C90S is another alternative aswell and what I have, and it destroys almost anything2.93ghz C2D cpu?? 512mb Geforce 8600gt with 512mb ram?? yes please
BTW my C90S was only 1600$ with
a E6700 2.66ghz cpu
3ghz of DDR2 667 ram
a 250GB 5400rpm hdd
blue tooth
a/g/n wireless
every connection known to man (including hdmi 1.3)
dual layer dvd burner
ect ect...
It definitly has more raw power than almost any notebook out there and is very cheap if you know how to buy one. The G1S however for now (soon to change I think) is a better "gaming" notebook because the gpu is faster. It only has 256mb of ram vs the 512 of the C90's card but it runs faster.
When the HD 2600XT comes out for the C90 tho, I think the tides will change. -

With a $2000 budget, you could get a laptop similar to the one in my sig, which can completely own WOW at max settings.
Go to XoticPC and configure this:
-17" WSXGA
-Core 2 Duo T7300 (2.0 GHz)
-8700M GT (the 7950 GTX is a bit more powerful, but you don't seem like an extremely demanding gamer, so it should be fine)
-2 GB of RAM
-100GB, 7200 RPM hard drive
-Vista Home premium
Total: $1974
You'll be able to play WOW twice over with room to spare.I bought my 5790 from XoticPC, and have been very satisfied with them. You can read my review in the sig also to get an idea of how it looks/performs.
Edit: All of this assumes that you'll be using it as a desktop replacement, and don't really plan on using the battery. If you require portability as well as power, VisciousXUSMC configured a pretty mean system a few posts up that would be better suited to mobility. -
i was going to get an alienware computer for gaming but found that i could get a much, much better deal going with dell... Wish I had enough money to buy one because the alienware lappys are hot (pardon the paris F***in-hilton expression..)
ViciousXUSMC... love the cat expressions in your siggy, hilarious -

Oooo thank you all : )

2 words: too expensive

This is kind of off topic, but since we're talking about brands - I dream of the day when I can buy a Falcon Northwest notebook.
-
Well, I wanted a gaming laptop that would double as my travel/conference presentation machine. I didn't really want the Alienware head getting the students talking about my laptop whilst the professors wondered what the hell was wrong with it and the industry lot were shaking their heads at my lack of professionalism whilst they clutch their Sony or HP pygmy computers.
My Asus G1S happened to come out at the right time with a top graphics card (HP, Dell etc all came later), was the right size (no bigger than 15.4") and the only distracting thing on it is the side green lights that flash. That you can turn off in an instant. -
so many alienware haters.....

If you want a Falcon-NW experience, then go to Xotic PC. They sell the same chassis laptops, cheaper, and still offer paintjobs too.
If you want the same chassis as a Falcon (the DRX is actually a sager 9260) at the cheapest price possible, then go to Rock or Powernotebooks. By cheapest, I mean $4k instead of $7+k. lol. But hey, 3 grand less is 3 grand less. Still damn expensive though. Blew an entire inheritance on mine! :-X -

If the only game your ever looking to play on your notebook is WoW then anything with a current generation (8x00) or last generation (7xx0) dedicated graphics card should play the thing at max settings without a problem. In this situation the 17" notebooks (like the NP5760 would be overkill).
If you're looking for the most powerful gaming systems out there then any 17" with a 8700 or 7950 (the 7950 will not be able to run DX10 games/programs). The drawback is that the 17" system are higher priced and heavier than the 15". If you're looking for a good 17" system the NP5790/570ru, Toshiba X205, and Asus G2 are all good choices.
If you're looking for something more portable and cheaper than you should stick with a 15". Good choices in that area are the c90, NP2090/IFL90, and Asus G1 which are among the top performing systems in the 15" category. Other choices of 15" systems you could consider are Dell, HP, Toshiba, and Acer.
What else do you plan to do with it besides play WoW?
(It may be in your best interests to fill out a FAQ that you can find in the Which notebook should I buy thread, so that people can recommend the best system(s) to fit with your needs/desires). -
That's the awesome thing about Vostro, boring enough to look like a third rate business laptop, but inside awesome enough to eat your Blizzard game for breakfast
Honestly, I would feel silly to be seen with Alienware or Voodoo stuff...just knowing how much more it costs. Also, the Voodoo website is really annoying to navigate. -
Whenever I see someone with an Alienware I just have to LOL at how dumb they are.
OP, you should look into an HP d2000z. Those models from last year. With the AMD processor. And a Go 7400. That should eat up WoW for you, if all you do is waste money on a crappy game every month.
For those who play games on laptops...
