I have reinstalled and have been playing Rise Of Nations...

    But It has crappy resolutions...

Is there anyway to force a resolution of 1680x1050?

Or do I have to cope with the crappy res?

I'm pretty sure you have to cope with the crappy resolution. I tried all the ways I knew for Stronghold Crusader and it stayed at that 1024x768 resolution

I think you can force a resolution on any game. Can`t remember though.
However, for example Starcraft can only be played at 640x480,no matter what.
I guess it depends on the game.I`ll have to get into that, I`m playing Hostile Waters(awesome game, any adventure game fan would love it) at the moment and it looks hideous on 1024x768 on a WUXGA screen, I`d like to force it to WUXGA somehow... :-/

Games like BF2142 where they are only playable in 4:3 resolutions can be forced because it's resolution capabilities stretch that far, but the old games with the low resolutions are stuck at them.

Widescreen Gaming is a good source. They even have detailed explanations of how the games are rendered in widescreen, whether it cuts out vertical viewing or adds horizontally, or just stretches [and, effectively, distorts] your view.

    Here you go...

EDIT: On a side note, when [what year, probably] did games increase native support for widescreen? A bit disappointing that some games, even just around a year old, still don't support widescreen natively :(
