You have heard about Call of Duty ?

worked fine on a celeron 1.5 with geforce 420 16MB which is often found in the hp/persario line ( don't know what you have ) .

imo looks and runs better on the old quake engine then newer games with fancy engines .

But most important it is fun .

Well buyrodents, you are in luck, because i am a die-hard FPS fan...However, you will never be able to find a good FPS for free, unless you can find something that is open source, but finding a good open source FPS will certainly not use "cutting edge technology". So, now that you know you probably won't find anything free, i will give you some great reccomendations on some games that i feel meet the following:
    1) Fun
    2) Addicting
    3) Cheap

A)Call of Duty/Call of Duty: United Offensive- great game, not cutting edge, but can be maxed out and then played for hours.
B)Far Cry- Awesome game, certainly close to cutting edge, amazing water detail, somewhat long game.
C)Doom3- the most demanding game ever made for the PC. You can certainly expect to get the Sh** scared out of yourself at least once while playing this one
D)Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix- Not cutting edge at all, but can be played for hours and hours while having endless loads of fun!

    Hope this helps you out!

another fun/cheap one is Counter-strike 1.6 and all the other half-life mods. You can buy half-life for 10.00 and then you have access to all of the mods counter-strike, team-fortress, action half-life, day of defeat, etc.

America's Army is a free FPS that looks pretty good. Plus, it loads completely on your HD so you don't have to take the CD with you to play.

If your looking for a FPS that uses actual weapons used by the military, and a game that it only takes one shot to kill you or your enemy I would definatly recommend Americas Army its now up to v2.4 and running on the unreal 2.5 engine (will be updated to the unreal 3 engine in the fall)

Battlefield 2 is looking very promising as a FPS.

It will come out in another month.
