you can grab for free the nomadic pack dlc, it unlocks 3 steppe factions so you can bring your horses to battle
You have to get it before 29th of october to be free

The review I read in MaximumPC said that turns take forever. There were other complaints too. They gave it a six out of ten.

That's not entirely accurate - at the mid-end of the game, when most of the nations are known to you, the game grinds to a screeching halt. Turns then take between 2 to 5 minutes, which is getting on my nerves. Historically accurate, perhaps, but in terms of gameplay - too many different tiny nations. I'll just wait for a mod that might sort this mess up.
Other than that, they improved the stability of the game a great deal, and the mods really enhance the gameplay. Now is not a bad time to jump in, actually. -

indeed mid late game the turns still take a lot of time, instead of mere 0-2s per faction, it takes 1-5s. I solved this with books
the dlc aint free if you get it now just for one week, you have to get it now for it to be free. I should have linked CA announcement, but given that people were still getting confused with it, I chose not to -
2-5 minutes between turns is a super long time. How do books fix this?

though I do recommend that you don't go for classics like sylvia plath they may hurt people -
