This is one of my favourite games of all time, i had like 8 years ago, but could never play it on XP. Thank you for this, i am downloading it now, and now i have seen this i cant wait for Red Alert 3
-
oooh free game I'll have to try it out, thanks
-
Too bad when I tried to install the games from the actual CD, it says I need Windows 95.
Such a shame, C&C RA1 was a great game.

Will these downloads work okay on Vista?

Ermm.. what are you supposed to do after you have downloaded it? Burn it to a disc to run it?
-
The game can definitely be run on XP and Vista. You will need to do some searching on the net to find out exactly how to run it.
I have the C&C decade DVD which I played the game from last year on my Vista Inspiron 9300. -
Now if only I could get the darn thing to work. -
Saweet!
I think it'll even run on this relic! *kicks* -

I actually found my original Red Alert discs gathering dust, but i just can't get it to work. I have installed it, installed the patch, but get an error message half way through loading the game up. Anybody got any ideas?
-
With the "The First Decade" release of C&C games, they made them all compatible with Windows XP. On the site where you downloaded it they said there are known issues with Vista, but don't give a solution.
Try running Virtual PC from Microsoft. It's a free download. But you need an actual XP disc to make it work. -
Try running it in Windows 95 compatibility mode.
-
go here to get it to work with vista:

Thanks Magma. This download IS still up.
-
Still working at the time of this post. Never played Red Alert, so I'm going to try it out.
-
Never played it, want to though.
Downloading all 6 disc. -
one for Allied
one for Soviets -
For installing on XP
- download the two discs
- extract them (with a program like WinRAR or 7-Zip)
- then you can Burn the ISO's onto blank CDs (or mount them on a virtual drive like Daemon Tools)
- insert the newly burned disc (or mount the image)
- (close any autorun stuff) browse into the disc.. through My Computer or Windows Explorer
- look for the SETUP.EXE, right-click on it and go to Properties
- (under Compatiblity tab) check "Run this program in compatiblity mode for" ... choose Windows 98 /ME
- hit OK to close that window
- (back in the root folder of the CD) double-click on the SETUP.EXE
- now it should install with no issues (dont install the Westwood Chat, its useless)
For playing on XP
- (after installing it) go to the "XP_Patch" folder that was extracted with the RAR files that was download (does not matter which one you choose Allied/Soviet, both are the same)
- copy the RA108USP.EXE to the folder where you installed the game
- double-click on the RA108USP.EXE to extract three files (PATCH.EXE, PATCH.RTP, PATCH.TXT)
- double-click on the PATCH.EXE to let it do its thing, then the game should be patched.
- you need to go to the Start Menu and "Westwood\Red Alert" folder
- right-click on the "Red Alert Windows 95 Edition" shortcut, choose Properties
- (under Compatiblity tab) check "Run this program in compatiblity mode for" ... choose Windows 98 /ME
- hit OK to close that window
- now you can click on that shortcut and it should play fine.
-
For whatever reason, I've done all the steps Gophn mentioned and the ones Westwood told us to do and I still stall at 24% when installing. I'm using Daemon tools lite 4.3 to mount.
-
thats strange man.
I just did the exact same thing on two different systems to test... works fine.
- one with Daemon Tools 4.xx
- one with burned CDs
it should not stall since there is not much being installed (~33MB) since this game mainly runs off the CD. (since back when this game came out, HDDs were 2.0GB and lower) -
Wow. Thomas. Just. Wow. WOW.
There's only two discs. And three mirrors for each. In other words you're downloading 3 of each disc.
Wow. WOW.
Hehe.

Put your guide up Gophn. T-t-triple post. -
My computer must have sensed that I was serious about installing the game this time and it worked. So far, I think I have to say I like Starcraft over Red Alert.
-
Man, sucks that I just installed Vista x64. Time to break out the old Ubuntu...
-
-
tried a bunch of ways to get it to work but it didn't end up working; oh well!
-
-
I lost my The First Decade disc ='(
-
Such a good game. I've had 3 different copies through various packs and freebies.
