Sorry for asking this, but I've come to believe that nothing in life is "free". So I was wondering if there are any catches to this promotional offer?

Well, HL2 Lost coast was pointless, since if you've got the copy of the game, you can update it for free anyway (right?). and guess what? To play, you will need HL2, so it's a win-win situation for them.

And it's not all Portal either, it's like the first 8 test chambers. They're still a lot of fun but it'll just leave you wanting to buy the Orange Box. (Which I ended up doing :D )

Though, portals is the demo only, and lost coast is a half life 2 map. Peggle extreme is also a demo as peggle deluxe is the full version.

Yeah you can add the games now and download later, which is what I'm doing. My laptop doesn't have the space.

Peggle Extreme is an extended demo, but it contains levels that are different than what you'll get in Peggle Deluxe. All the Extreme levels are Orange Box themed and quite fun. :)

You don't need HL2 to play Lost Coast? I have HL: Deathmatch and Lost Coast on my computer from the free offer, played Deathmatch quite a bit, but I've never had HL2...downloading both games was very quick.

you can download the games to 100+ computers if you'd like. But you can only play on one computer at a time.

you don't have to own half life 2 to play lost coast. if you just have lost coast, then you just have lost coast.

of course, it will be a pretty big download - you will have to download all the half life 2 assets... the engine, models, textures, everything.

steam is pretty cool in that it allows you to share common files. if you have half life 2 already, lost coast is literally like a 20 MB download (they share a lot of files)

the same is true for all source games. counter strike source, hl2, lost coast, etc. all share the engine files.

that sort of thing is really cool and only steam offers it. you won't see innovation like that anywhere else. battlefield 2 and 2142? completely separate. 6 GB or whatever install each.

Its too bad none of these games are fun. I wish they would make some good games free like half life 2 or something.

Is it me or is HL2 Deathmatch absolutely terrible? I tried a number of servers and they all had unrealistic and dull wide-open maps. The gameplay was repetitive and unsatisfying. In other words, it was the opposite of the game it is based on.

I thought it was pretty fun - OK as a straight foward shooter it's a bit bland but with a good server with most people using the gravity gun, it's a great laugh!
