Hey guys...wow been a while since i've posted here now......
anyway, my problem is that i just brought DOD:S (Day of Defeat Source) via STEAM and it's constantly freezing up in game with looping sounds....sometimes tho it goes back to normal but most of the time (98%) it just stays frozen......
now i've gone to the STEAM support page and done one of their new self scanner thingys and it says that my graphics card (ATI X1600 256mb) is "very severly" out of date......ok so i went to www.omega.net or watever that website is called and downloaded the lastest drivers for my x1600 but that still didn't cure it......and since ATI themselves don't actually have ANY releases for their mobility ATI range graphics cards i'm really stuck.......
i've tried downloading one of those driver mod tools (DHmodtool4) and tried converting the desktop ati x1600 to my lappy...managed to update my ati x1600 that way but the **** game still bloody locks up with freezing sounds!!!!!

can ANYBODY tell me what is wrong?!
-NOTE: Asus A6JA -- ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 256mb
-
I believe the latest AT Mobility Cats will work with the X1k series. Previous releases never installed on my Acer X1300 based laptop, but the 6.8s did install successfully.
But to me it sounds like a sound card issue, have you tried what is recommended HERE. -
yeah i download the new bios and sound drivers but i have ABSOULTELY NO IDEA where i'm suppose to extract them to!
cause i'm not "that" much of an expert wen it comes to laptops/computers
.......there is also one thing...wen i run the sound checker from dxdiag......during the 20th test with the sound acceleration at full......it fails.....there's no sound........until i pull the slide down 2 bars -

Are you having any problems with other games? Sounds like this problem may be related to DOD:S and not your laptop.
In any case, do a manual Windows Update and see if it finds any driver updates. Install those if you find any.

yes, i had this problem with css. set the launch options to dx7
and then you shound have no problems. Like after 2 rounds the game would crash for me. in steam, right click on the game, and properities>set launch options and type "-dxlevel 70 " no ". tell me if that fixes it for you.
-
there is also an option within steam that allows you to check for corrupted game files. I would run that and see if it works before goin down to dx7. Also, i have found that deleting the local game content and then re-downloading it will give you an improvement as well......

no CS:S works fine on my laptop it's just DOD:S that freezes.....i'll try both the options and tell u which one worked or didn't work

Hey guys.....this might be an odd question, but where do i install the new driver files that i download for my laptop? they don't come with one of those self install files......
My laptop: Asus A6Ja
i mean i can download the new files, but how do i install them and where?
this is what the guys said:
"I just went to their website and downloaded the Catalyst Drivers for your card.
Here's a link to the drivers page you can download from:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=293
And here's a good list of other troubleshooting that may help your issue:
Please take the following Steps. Please be sure to complete each one and reboot your computer after each step as these have been found to be some of the most likely causes of the error you are receiving.
1. Update all graphics card and motherboard drivers. *NOTE* Be sure you are using the driver removal tool on your card manufacturer's site to fully remove the old drivers before installing the new one, this step is necessary!**
2. Download and install the most up to date version of DirectX
3. Download the newest drivers for your sound card
4. Update windows
5. If none of the above works, disable the soundcard via device manager and try running the game.
If you still have the same crash after completing these steps please try the following:
Right click the game name in the Play Games menu in Steam, then select advanced, launch options. Add the following line in the bar for launch options:
-nosound -window -dxlevel 70 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0
If that works then remove -nosound and set the directx hardware sound acceleration to "BASIC"
You will also want to run a memory test to be sure your RAM is not faulty, one popular free test is linked below:
http://www.memtest86.com/
In addition to checking your RAM, you will also want to verify your RAM's timing matches what it is set to in the BIOS, you will need to review what latency your RAM stick (be sure they match, example: If you RAM is set to 3.0 timing in the bios you should have 3.0 timed RAM in your PC)
After each step be sure to reboot the machine and try running the game, if none of the above works, please reply to this message, and attach the error logs from whichever game you are attempting to play.
Additional Troubleshooting:
Please do not attempt these steps unless you are familiar with the system BIOS.
Disabling Fastwrites may increase system stability. You should find this feature within the system BIOS.
If you are using an AGP 8x motherboard, with an AGP 8x Videocard, try reducing 8x to 4x.
Try rolling back your drivers to the previous known good version for your card.
The following settings are for advanced users, do not attempt if you are unfamiliar with these settings.
AGP Aperture or Graphics Windows Size should be set to 128 or 256
Disable any 揝hadowing?or 揗emory Hole?br> Disable "Cache Video BIOS"
AGP Driving mode should be set to 揂uto?br> Adjust AGP voltage to 1.6v in Bios
If you are overclocking your computer, please revert memory timing and voltage to standard settings for your machine.\\
Finally, be sure to check your videocard manufacturer's site for any sofware/driver conflicts that may be known issues with your particular card/driver version:
http://www.ati.com
http://www.nvidia.com
http://www.sis.com
Once this has been completed, Please click the following link:
steam://support/?Issues=*
This will run a diagnostic program on your computer, Please copy and paste the output, or attach the html output file in a reply to this message.
If you cannot click the link, copy and paste it into and address bar to run the tool."
now like i have said before.....I AM NOT A WIZ WEN IT COMES TO COMPUTERS! so reading through all the rest of this has made me very confused.....i understand the first 5 steps....but not the rest....
Help would be appreciated
