Fun open-ended, sandbox games? (I really like large scale games like Mount and Blade)

Any good open ended sandbox games? I really liked Mount and blade and are there any similiar games? I would appreciate any suggestions. Also please say if it's demanding or not.

near everyone is going to recommend TES4 Oblivion, Fallout 3 which are both fairly demanding in terms of graphics.

edit: Gothic 3 is another good one.

    GTA's
    Far Cry's
    Garry's Mod

Those are my top 3 and I cant think of others right now...

    Others would be:
    Cryengine 2 (Crysis Editor)
    Farcry 2 Editor

Those are more advanced but definitely allow the most freedom

    Others deserved to be mentioned:
    Skate (Open-ended Skating)

Depends what you are looking for... WoW is technically open-ended but not very sandboxish... etc...

    Sim City. Not Demanding
    Fable (Kinda Open Ended)
Black & White 2 (Pretty Much Open Ended) Used to be demanding, not really demanding any more.

You can always try Oblivion for the PC, like BHD said before (your laptop should be able to run it, easily; not at max settings however) It's a lot of fun, and there's mods out the wazoo out there for it, not to mention DLC from Bethesda themselves.

And if you liked Oblivion, you can also try its predecessor, Morrowind for PC. Beware that Morrowind is pretty HARD to start off, but gets more fun if you stick with it, and also has a lot of mods for it and DLC. As for specs, if you can't play it with your current laptop, go get it fixed, because it's broken. This game is that old. (Might have a problem with Vista, just run compatibility mode for it).

Or you can try Fallout 3, made by the same company, for some post-apocalyptic fun, also with Mods now, with the G.E.C.K. being out and all, and also some DLC from Bethesda too. (Some hardcore Fallout fans would want to tear me to shreds for saying this, but Fallout 3 was pretty fun imho). If you turn down the settings, you should still be able to play this one.

Also, I would recommend the older Fallouts too. Fallout 2 was my favorite, but both of them deserve to played by anybody willing to call themselves gamers.

If you liked Fallout 3, there's also S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl which was okay, aside from all the bugs and stuff. Fallout 3 is better though, imho. Fun game if you want to practice your Russian, however.

There's Assassin's Creed, which is a spot of fun, but not quite as open-ended as the other games I've mentioned so far. It is demanding spec-wise, so beware on playing this one.

If you're more into the Wild West and cowboys, there's Guns for the PC. I actually haven't beaten the game yet, but I like it so far.

Finally to round off the list: Sci-Fi.

There's Mass Effect for PC that you can try; I've played the Xbox 360 version, and the game isn't half-bad (except when the bad guys are screaming "The enemy is here!" while foregoing taking cover to rush your position and blow your brains out, but that's when you use some Biotics to suspend your enemy in midair for a few seconds, hum a little tune, and then use your shotgun to blow him/her/it across the room. Much, much joy in that.) Not to mention they put A LOT of effort into making a backstory for this game (paragraphs of history for each race, planet sometimes, etc.) and more; certainly a game worth trying. As for specs, maybe demanding, wouldn't know until you try.

And for old school folks out there, there's The Ur-Quan Masters, fondly remembered as "Star Control 2" by those who actually played the game back in the days. This game is very fun, and while the controls might take some getting use to, there's a lot of planets in this game to explore and a lot of space to fly in. Plus, the ship fighting minigame is something of an art form to become good at with practice, and plenty of ships to try (not mention that the ship-fighting game is also multiplayer, which is interesting.) I believe this game is also the inspiration for Mass Effect; there's so many similarities, not to mention that some parts of the game seem a little "copy and paste" from Ur-Quan Masters (e.g. Mining). Overall, great game, and considering that this game was made for DOS, you shouldn't have any problems running this game at Max Graphics Settings =)

You can download the game from here

Well, this is my two cents and then some; I've played all these games at one point or another, so if you have any questions, just let me know.

Just remember, most of all, to have fun and remember to get up and eat once in a while =)

As for this question, Hmmmmm..... I guess there's the Total War series of games, like Rome Total War, etc. where it's BIG on micromanagement of army strategies, etc.

    Read about it here

I hope this helps; if I think of anything else, I'll repost it here.

Edit: Are you looking into RTS games? Because I can help in that arena; otherwise, I think Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War/ Dawn of War II might also be interesting for you.

Absolutely Oblivion and Garry's Mod, check Garry's Mod on youtube. The bad thing about Garry's Mod is that you have to buy it online (isn't that bad) and you have to get either CS:S, HL2, Team Fortress, etc... Those games are kinda cheap anyway.

you'd probably like mass effect. No massive armies, but they make the universe in-game look huge, when in reality it's about 20~ planets.

another goody is of course Oblivion and a game called GTA:SA

Mass Effect is one of bioware's best work imo. can't wait for dragon age.

already mentioned but closest thing to mount&blade is probably total war series but you don't get to control single character.

you may be interested in guild wars as well.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Knights of the old republic. (Or K.O.T.O.R.) Very fun game made by Bioware back in 2003, I don't know where you can pick up a PC version though. Also I think they still sell KOTOR 2 for the PC at Bestbuy (Last time I checked)

GTA: San Andreas has "Gang Wars" in it. Your player char teams up with NPCs to battle other NPCs over "hoods" in the game. You can even steal a bus to transport like 10 of your homies to the fight.

Saint's Row has it too, don't know about Saint's Row 2.

Grab Rome: Total War Gold for 10 bucks on steam and see what you think. I think its amazing. Like Civilizations meets age of Empires and the gold pack has 2 expansions with it as well. Really worth the 10 bucks and you'll gt hundreds of hours out of it for sure.

Also if you get GTA San Andreas and grab the SA=MP (mulitplayer) there are server that old 200 people and you join gangs and have wars and its TONS of fun and the game area is an entire state with big cities and little towns and country side you really can't beat that in terms of experience. Cars, plans, helicopters, tanks, buses just so much to do and so much fun to be had!

Hi guys thanks for all the answer. Just trying Rome Total War right now. More answers would be appreciated. So there are no other games that's like Mount and Blade?
P.S. I don't like "ganster" theme games like GTA.

"Crysis" has objectives, but the way you go about completing them is pretty open.

Also, I thought I would suggest "Civilization IV." Not sure if it is what you have in mind, but thought I would suggest it anyways. Great game.

    Hope this helps!

If you want something similar to Rome: Total War but with a medieval setting then the obvious answers would be Rome's precedessor game Medieval: Total War and its sequel Medieval 2: Total War.

Man, since you guys mentioned Mount and Blade, I decided to download it and try it out for myself.

It's freaking awesome =) I've been playing this game for nearly 9 hours straight and it's a lot of fun. I guess I should buy it now, now that I've reached the level limit and all. I hope TaleWorlds make a sequel to this game; I would love to see what they do next.

PS Horseback fighting kicks butt, seriously. I can't fight any other way.

    I second this! :D

Though it IS also fun to fight out of the horse. The arenas were fun at the beginning.

I only guess that the tutorial could also teach a bit on how the game works, rather than just how to battle.
I had to figure all the map/party/battles/prisoners/skills dealing out myself...

Mount & Blade reminded me of some online game called Savage. It's somewhat simmilar for the battle part (assuming you play as a player and not as the commander).
It is basically an RTS game where the soldiers are controlled each by a player (in 3rd person view) and 1 guy for each team is the commander which has RTS view over the scenery, builds stuff and gives orders to the folks playing as soldiers.
I guess that they even have a 2nd version now, Savage 2.

Might not be just like M&B, just that it reminded me this other game :D

I remember hearing about savage when it was first being released. I thought the idea was very cool, but heard there were severe lag problems with the servers when it was first released.

I have to agree with you guys. I have like 300 people and its fun capturing castle. I won 50 on 500 while I was defedning my castle. But now I'm trying Rome Total War and I g2 admit, I love it. I really look forward to Mount&Blade 2 lol. I also tried StarWars mod and it's interesting but needs more work.

The guild 2 ... slow but seems like it fits what you are asking
