So ATI is pwning nvidia in terms of GPUs (mobile and desktop) right now, and with the new Fermi soon to be released, when can we expect a new gen of mobile nvidia GPUs?

of course, problem is that the GTX200M is still running on the older G92b core (desktop 9800 GTX equivalent), so with the new fermi release, it may be that the next gen mobile cards from nvidia will be upgraded to the GT200/GT200b core on the current desktop GTX200 cards, although it will be interesting to see what name it will be given, likely GTX370M/380M since the desktop GF100/Fermi will be named the GTX470/480

I'd say in at least 6 months...

Sadly I don't buy ATI. I think they work for some people but I have always had better experiences with Nvidia cards. Same goes for AMD chips. I don't touch them at all. To me the future is Nvidia when they decide its time for that step.

The GT360 already released and as you suspected it's a rebranded GT240. The 300 series got bad press so it seems Nvidia plans to skip the 300 and release the GF100 based as 400 series.

Do I think the GF100 as it's marketed be release for mobile? Unlikely. Everything I read saying the GF100 is breaking records for size, power consumption and heating.

GF100 was designed to be a desktop part from the onset. That's how nVidia works...built it big, powerful, and hungry...then shave it down to smaller less powerful (and cheaper) cards after the big splash has been made.

Fermi will hit laptops, probably 6-8 months after the desktop release.

I think Nvidia needs a new naming scheme for their cards, all the numbers are rather ridiculous and quite confusing if you don't know what you're looking at.

    Then again, so does ATi.

From what little I know, the Fermi core won't be laptop friendly anytime soon (and its not seeming to be too desktop friendly, either).

At least ATI's numbers are somewhat sane. A bigger number is pretty much always a faster card in the same series. NVidia is the one that does stuff like having the 260M, the GTS 260M, and the GTX 260M, and just expects people to know what's faster. They want the slower parts to catch the "Oh, it's a 260, but it's cheap!" crowd that doesn't notice that it's missing the "GTX" bit.

Well, if nVidia's numbering scheme made more sense...people wouldn't come to our forum nearly as often to ask about performance differences between the cards :p.

    Lol agreed.

I used to go NVdia not because I am a fan boy, but they always seemed better at the time i needed a card, but always had the odd problem here and there. And the whole renaming card thingy just insulted me eventually. Add to that my GFs laptop 8600 burning and I went over to ATI. I now got a 5870 in my desktop.

All this to get my point across, there is no future for me in NVidia :p

My number one reason for buying nVidia would be this new Optimus tech, if it is implemented on a real high-end gaming notebook. Then again, if there is a nice ATI laptop with switchable graphics I'd have no hesitation getting that, even if switching the GPUs was more involved than the Optimus setup.

Only product I'm looking forward to from Nvidia is ION 2 and the rumors of it being some kind of mini-PCIe/Express card discrete GPU.

Just a heads up. On the HD5870 I get 2 hours and 30 minutes browsing the net. I've read GenTech getting even better results, almost 3 hours. How much battery life were expecting? Is this a high performance laptop, business, or netbook?

But Nvidia's new update on the switchable hybrid is interesting.

looking at the next few months , NVDIA will be pwened by ATI... nothing it has compares to what ATI has now... but when ferni comes out , i don't know... This new optimus tech looks great but i prefer having just 1 GPU and not one that switches and causes lagg or what... maybe in a few years , switchable GPU's will become standard but for now , i would stay away from them.
