When I started playing Crysis I had all my settings on High (default for my system) and the resolution set at the native resolution for my external LCD (1680*1050) yet the picture was very fuzzy and out of focus. About 5 minutes in my computer shut down with no warning despite the fans spinning at full speed (I am guessing it overheated.) Could the fuzziness be caused by heat issues, bad drivers or a faulty video card? The only other game I play a lot is World of Warcraft and assuming I am not in a capital city, I get ~60-100 fps and nothing is blurry.
Any ideas on why Crysis is blurry for me? Does it start off that way on purpose? I did just update to the nVidia 169.09 drivers on the laptopdrivers2go.com site.

High all, on a M1710? you gotta be kidding me.
First of, upgrade video card drivers to 169.09 or .04. AT LEAST.
Try lowering res/settings to see if it helps.
I have a hard time believing you can play high, with 60-100 fps, not even a 8800GTX can do that. -
I said I am getting 60-100 fps in World of Warcraft.
Crysis is a totally different story. I do have 169.09 drivers installed. Also, I have settings on high only because Crysis claims that is the optimal setting for my system; I will try running it again whit settings lowered to medium. -
Can you try running it on your main screen at a lower resolution? It could have something to do with the external monitor. I don't think the fuzzyness would be a symptom of overheating. Overheating causes artifacting, not generally "fuzzyness". In other words, if it really was overheating the GPU (not considering the CPU), then you'd either start seeing colored lines shooting off everywhere or missing/corrupt textures or little dots all over the screen. On second thought, if you are seeing "fuzzyness" in terms of little dots all over the screen, maybe it IS overheating.
The computer should never overheat unless it is clogged with dust. Clean out the vents and fans with a can of compressed air unless all of the dust is out. You many need to open up the computer to get it out of the inside.
There is a natural fuzzyness added to the screen when you are using iron sights or the zoom function, but that probably isn't what you are seeing.
Good Luck with this. -
My bad, just got home after a 700 mile drive and did not see that part.
Optimal settings in Crysis are a bunch of BS . On your system, medium and 1280 is perfect to get both performance and good quality.
Maybe you can post a picture with the problem? -
Fuzziness? Are you sure about your external monitors native resolution? Fuzziness seems to be a property that is more related to using a resolution that doesn't coincide with your native resolution.

I tried turning down the settings to medium and 1280*800 resolution on my main screen. The picture was more clear, but the frame rate reminded me of a slide show (with 3-4 second pauses now and again) more than a game. Also, about the time where you find the guy hanging dead upside down in the tree on the first level my system turned itself off for heat related issues.
This notebook is only a few months old and there is little to no dust preventing air flow (I opened it up three nights ago and double checked.) I am guessing either the CPU or the GPU is faulty.
When I first posted that the game was fuzzy, I was using the native resolution of my external 22" LCD (LG 226WTQ.) The textures loaded like one shade of grey and black for rocks, white and a second shade of white for sand and two shades of greens for trees. It was like I was walking around with my glasses off and could make out general shapes, but no detail at all -
Based on that recent information, it really does sound like a hardware issue going on there. If the computer is performing a hard shutdown with zero error messaging before occuring that only supports the idea.
Based on the slideshowyness you mentioned, I was about to suggest defragmenting your hard drive...but really, based on all of the other information you have put forward, I'd say some internal component is borked.
You should definately consider calling up Dell. They'll walk you through some procedures to help them identify the issue. I'd assume it is the GPU that is faulty, but it could also be your CPU. Less likely, but still possible could be a mainboard malfunction. -
Has anyone else been getting a hard shutdown issue with the 169.09 drivers?
Fuzzy out of focus Crysis !!
