Hey guys, I bought a G50vt-X6 a few months back and recently I've been playing World of Warcraft. I play the game at ultra settings and I'm getting around 25-40 fps in most areas like Stormwind which aren't the most populated places. I was just thinking I should probably be able to get more than this correct? Is it somethings to do with my drivers? Which ones would be best at the moment?

Another issue is heat, when I play WoW the laptop gets pretty loud and when I check heat with Hwmonitor the GPU goes up to 86 degrees, is this normal?

    Thanks.

o.o It depends on what GPU you're running usually I guess

Can we get the specs for your laptop?

9800M GS might get hot but 86 o_O Do you use a cooler or not? It looks a little big hotter than my 9800M GT x3 Mine tops at around 75~78 but then again I use a cooler o.o

Also, make sure you're not playing on a surface that may block the vents

86*C is not too bad, though I do not know what is normal for the G50vt; check the ASUS forum. My HP's 9600 GT gets to 96 - 98*C playing games.

As far as the cooling system goes, no you cannot change the heatsink or fan. You could apply Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound but buying a cooling pad would be easier and more beneficial. I suggest the Zalman NC1000; it takes about 20*C off my 9600 GT's temperature (75-80*C vs 96*C).

I think it may be the weather lately it's been really hot. Should I try spraying air in to clean out dust and maybe dog hair haha

No, I'm sure he means centigrade. I don't know the stress limits of the 9600, but some of the GTX 260m cards in the Asus G51 have crested 100C.

Hippy, what drivers are you using? The difference between stock drivers and higher drivers--or Dox's optimized ones--is huge. At 1280x1024 I got a 400+ 3DMark06 score increase using the same CPU and GPU settings.

I'm not familiar with WoW, but I was once a proud G50vt-X6 owner before the G51 stole my money. With Dox 186.68 and a little overclock on the CPU and GPU, I was not able to get satisfactory gameplay at high settings, no AA, and 1280x1024 resolution. I don't know if that's helpful or not, but there you go.

Yes, use compressed air to get dust out of the vents. If possible, remove the bottom panel that covers the fan to get direct access to it.
    Forge is right - I actually mean 98*C. It's toasty . . .

I'm using the Dox drivers you mentioned, so they're not good you are saying?

Dox drivers give a marginal performance boost I'd say but at the cost of increased temperature usually. Use the dox drivers if you think you can handle the increased temperature otherwise, the official drivers should be fine

Drop the shadow slider in the graphics settings right down to the minimum.

That's likely to double your framerate in a lot of cases.

do not play in windowed mode...
this alone will greatly improve your FPS...

in my craptacular laptop, i get 30-50FPS in full screen mode, 40 avg in raids...
in windowed... i've hit as low as 10...

cut down on some of your UI's...
yea, auctioneer is great, so is all the loot database...but still... do you need em?

simplify your UI as much as you can... get a decent button mod, map mod, bag mod, and a quest/leveling mod (if you're not 80 yet)...

i load auctioneer and other stuffs only on my bank alt...

For your Asus how much FPS are you experiencing in 25-man raid content? I'm looking for a laptop that can mainly handle WoW. In a busy a fairly busy boss fight (say Grobbulus in Naxx, or 25 Emalon), how well does a laptop with your specs do?

Also, as other has suggested don't play in Windows mode. I'm using an old PC and am trying to get as much FPS as I can when playing WoW (hence the reason I'm looking for a laptop upgrade). Changing from windows mode -> normal drastically increased my slowdowns in game.

For FPS don't worry about it, this laptop will do fine. I don't play windowed but I found the shadows to be the problem, it's happening to everyone else as well. Without shadows I can get over 150 FPS. As for raiding I haven't gotten into that yet.

What I'm mainly concerned about fixing now is heat.. I tried to install regular nVidia drivers by the way but they keep failing. It says I can't install the 64 bit drivers on my 64 bit system. It says that no compatible drivers were found when I try to install. Also if I change the drivers how much will this impact my gaming performance?
