    My Laptop is DDR2 9600m GT 512mb. Will this mean my machine is inferior for games?

    I edited the thread title to the correct terms. :)

    GDDR3 is essentially a die-shrink of DDR2 meaning it runs cooler thus allowing for higher memory speeds. The difference is not ''dramatic'' and it certainly isn't a deal killer. It will do just fine. The GPU core is identical.

    I thought that DDR3 really does make a difference.

    But that doesn't mean your machine is INFERIOR for games. Just look at the poor s who have the 8400 or even worse... (no offense obviously - just trying to make a point).

    It's a mid range GPU so you won't be able to play modern games at very high settings but you'll get by with medium and sometimes even medium-high settings on games. It will be hard to run games coming out in a year on this card though. The GDDR3 version of the 9600M GT is a bit faster but still a mid range GPU so not a huge difference.

    The difference is usually around 15-20% in speed.

    Well it will be fine a year one for sure. 2 years? Probably. Depending on his screen resolution. 3? Most probably not. My HD2600 is certainly doing very well for a year old GPU. :)

    It does make a difference, but there are other important factors. In no way is having a GDDR2 version of a card suddenly going to make you that much worse off compared to the other GDDR3 version of the same card since the other specs of the GPU are exactly the same. I'd probably change GPU altogether rather than worry between GDDr2 and GDDR3 memory on the same GPU lol :p.

    The main differences is that his will run cooler and it'll be better for overclocking, but actual performance gain will not be the hugest thing in the world, but it'll be noticeable.

    gddr2=\=ddr2.
    gddr3=\=ddr3.

    gddr3 is more similar to ddr2 than ddr3. and gddr2 has been phased out, it's based on ddr rather than ddr2.
