    Hi,

A couple days ago, I ordered an HP dv5t notebook with the 512 MB 9600M GT graphics card. I read that this card could come with either DDR2 or DDR3. Would anyone be able to tell me which one HP uses in their dv5t notebooks?

    Thanks!

Thanks. I was hoping. At a minimum, it'll be a significant upgrade to my current 5-year-old notebook.

What's your budget? Maybe you can afford an Asus G50Vt-X1 from Best Buy instead?

Should try a refund if you really want the GDDR3. Apparently the difference is noticeable. Or.. an exchange and pay the difference for an upgrade to a more powerful notebook.

From a 5 year old notebook it'll be night and day.. this is consumer technology we're talking about... Here today and gone tomorrow.

Even the DDR2 version can sport some impressive numbers and should be more than enough to play some decently new games at medium-high settings. A couple of exceptions can be had, but who really wants to play those games anyways *cough* Crysis *cough* :p

Also keep in mind the notebook surrounding the GPU can lead to more performance as well. You may only score a ~4,400 in 3DMark06 with that low end C2D Cpu and 3GB of ram, but if you up it to 4GB, a 64 bit OS and throw a P9500 in there you'll see performance in the 5,000+ in no time.

If the difference between a 512mb DDR2 8600M GT and 256MB DDR3 8600M GT is anything to go by there should be a solid 15-20% increase in performance with DDR3 9600M GT especially as it comes with 512MB DDR3.

I configured the dv5t notebook with the following:

    C2D P7350
    2GB DDR2 RAM (I'll upgrade to 4 GB separately)
    512MB 9600M GT
    1680x1050 screen
    Vista 64-bit
    250GB 5400rpm HD

... for $730 before tax. That's about my budget. It's pretty low, so I'm not expecting to get really high performance or anything. Really just wondering if I might have lucked out with DDR3 on the graphics card.

Considering my current notebook is so old, I really haven't played any of the recent games. What do you guys think are some of the more recent games that should play well on the configuration above? I'm not a big fan of FPS. I tend to enjoy Civ4, flight sims, RTS, and RPG.

I wouldn't consider a DDR2 over GDDR3 a deal breaker anyways. The performance increase is noticeable, but I mean, if you want a performance increase, I'd just skip over to a 256bit bus interface GPU(i.e. the "high end" ones).

As for your rig wuhoo, most RTS and Flight Simulator games are CPU intensive, so they should run relatively well since your CPU is a decent one. As for anything else, we'd need a distinct list of games, but feel free to post in the "Can My Notebook Run it?" thread :D
