    Hi,

I have a desktop pc (now sadly killed to bits) that was c2d 2.5 - 4gb ram - and a Gainwood 9500gt 1gb ram. Now i'm in the market for a laptop and have got a bit confused about GFX power. I play Quakelive mostly, the desktop got a solid 125fps (most of the time). I don't want any less GFX power than the 9500gt offers, and ideally want more! Some of the latops i have be considering (like the Samsung 9) only have the Intel onboard HD3000 chip. How does this compare to what i have? I know if i got a discrete chip i would good to go but also this is more heat and noise. So if the onboard chip exceeds the old 9500 it would be nice.

Sorry made a short question looong...

P.s I have looked at comparison charts on the web got really confused, as there are so many and i'm not familiar with any bench marking programs. Cheers, J

The Intel HD3000 is weak, weak, weak, weak like pretty much every other video chip Intel did. Did i mention weak? They are at best on par with a 8200 onboard, more realistically, with a 6200... If you get a really fast processor with it then maybe it'll do something... but that's an expensive solution. Now people will argue that there are tests that show it is actually half-decent. But they were done with a top-of-the-line i7 processor. And that ain't cheap.

The fact that nVidia also did a great big relabeling doesn't help either. I'd look for something with an ATi video chip. I have the HD3450 in one of my laptops but that's tech from 2 years ago, so you'll probably look for a 5000 series model. Anyway, a HD54xx should be roughly on par with the Geforce 9500 you had in your desktop. Maybe a tad lower but no big difference.

Thanks uN1Qu3, your first sentence gave me a big laugh. So this kind of rules out any laptop without a discrete chip. At-least i know that now. I do not want to go any lower than the 9500, so i will use the level above the HD54xx as the base spec.

KLF - i did check that chart but got bogged down with info overload pretty fast.. Also i don't know how a desktop chip compares to a mobile one, so i get more confused again. Never run any benchmarks, sorry.

Intel 3000 is between the 310M and 320M, no really it is. 3DMark06 with a SB i5 is~3700-4500.

I don't know the comparison either but if you can find some benchmark results on your 9500, then you know what mobile cards are as powerful as those you'll find in the list.

I'm just too lazy to google the reviews myself ;)

The following are the generations of the cards
    ATI.....old stuff.....9--- x--- x1--- 2--- 3--- 4--- 5--- 6---
    Nvidia..old stuff.... 5--- 6--- 7--- 8--- 9--- 2-- 3-- 4-- 5--

Replace -- with numbers from 10 to 90, and --- with numbers from 100 to 970. This number corresponds to an exponential increase in performance of the card in a generation. 5870 isn't 13% better than 5770; it's ~twice as powerful.

Desktop cards are roughly 1.5x - 2x better than laptop cards with the same number.
