Hey guys, I'm about to finally complete my long awaited purchase of a notebook, but before I do I need to settle on a GPU. My question is in regard to the ATI x1600 128MB (512MB/hyper, though we all know what a hoax that is).

Will this card be able to support the following games on at least MEDIUM settings?

    Supreme Commander
    Medieval Total War II
    Battlefield 2142

I know all about the dx10 about to be released, but I don't game enough to be that concerned with it..I did a thread search but didn't turn up much on these particular games, so any insight on how that card would run these @ 1680x1050 resolution would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    The Old Man

Depends on the resolution. If you're talking a 1680x1050 screen, no very likely. With a smaller resolution (1280x800 or so), you might be able to. I would consider waiting for the next generation laptops which are just around the corner. Even if you don't want the DX10 capabilities, you should still be able to get an updated laptop soon, which will last you longer.

Maybe i can help. I don't have the exact same card as you, mine is an
    x1600 w/ 256MB + 512 hyper. but it's near enough.

Supreme comander will be fine i'd expect, but that one's more down to the processor you're fielding, my 1.86Ghz Core duo (T2400) runs SupCom happily enough.

i've not given 2142 more than a passing glance but it did run at low - med settings and it was playable, but the whole BF series kinda rubs me up the wrong way recently.

Total war 2 will run fine on that gfx card, i play all the time at medium settings, even in large scale LAN battles it remains perfectly playable.

Again SupCom and Total war are much more dependant on CPU, but the
X1600 will happily run those games at mid settings. BUT this is at my laptop native resolution. 1280 * 768. honestly your expecting too much at 1600 or higher.

Thanks alot for the info! I wish the Clevo M570U could be configured with a x1600 256MB..but alas, the next step up is the 7800GTX. The CPU i'd be using is the T7200 2.0GHz along with 2gigs of ram. I could live with lowering the resolution, i just tend to use 1680x1050 as a nice benchmark.

Will I have two laptops, one with the 256MB/512MB HM Mobility X1600 and one with the 128MB/512MB HM Mobility X1600 version. On the 128MB version I've played Battlefield 2(same engine as BF2142) with all high settings at 1280x800, Counter Strike Source at all high settings without any problems, Armed Assault on medium, with one or two on high(depending on the map) and view distance at 768. Although there are a few differences between the 128MB and the 256MB X1600 GPU's, I've noticed they perform quite similarly. The card might not be future proof, but it can play most present games at mid-high settings at fair resolutions.
