I know this was brought up before but the problem could be something else (read on for explanation).

I'm trying to update my 6990M from the stock driver the Sager placed on the laptop. However, like discussed many times, windows reinstalls the driver automatically after restarting. Even after disabling auto update, it still continues.

To get around this I tried uninstalling the old driver then installing the new one before I restarted my laptop but when I went back into device manager after restart, the old version 8.850.0.0 is still showing as current driver. Do all the drivers come up as the same version or am I indeed running into the auto update problem?

I suggest you uinstall all ATI drivers. Run Driver Sweeper to remove all traces of older driver. Now i don't know what this auto-update thing is but disable the setting. Reinstall the latest drivers.
