I have a 512 mb 8600m gt with 162.18 drivers (Vista 32), and I've been curious about over-clocking, as I've heard the 8600 cards can be overclocked pretty well. I wanted to check my gpu heat first though while running a game, so I downloaded RivaTuner and checked it out.

During heavy use (C&C 3 on high settings, high res) the gpu reached temps close to 75 degrees. Does this seem a little high for stock speeds? What temps are overclocked 8600m gt's reaching?

I also checked the temp at idle, and it was around 60 degrees.

If these temps do seem high, should I fiddle with the fan settings? If so, I've never done it before, so I'd need some tips.

Well then, lol. I checked out a similar thread right above mine and got about the same info. Looks like my temps are fine.

As for overclocking, I've read that the 162.18 drivers don't support overclocking? What happens if I try to tune things through rivatuner?

I believe it might overclock for a short while but will revert to stock settings when you reboot, or something. I remember reading that, but I'm not positive.

your fine as long as you stay under 80-85 degrees C... but like always, the cooler your system the better it will perform. i had an alienware that reached 79 C and the performance dropped like crazy. right now on my 8700M GT i never seen it go above 65 C no matter how long or heavy the usage is. idle it will stay at a cool 40 C.

i suggest you check out a chill mat :)

What model is it?? From what I'm seeing, I strongly believe the asus g1s has really bad cooling. As my idle temp is even higher then your peak. Mine idles at 70C and when gaming it reaches 92C!! :(

I have a Toshiba X205 with the 8700M GT, it idles at 55c and capped at 69c during heavy gaming with FEAR, STALKER, BF 2......
