Hello everyone, i just picked up my new laptop yesterday, a toshiba p50-b-103, i actually first bought an asus k450jn, but it had a little problem with the mousepad so i went to the store again and noticed this (i think better) machine.
    The asus had a 2gb ddr3 nvidia gt840m and this one has a 2gb gddr5 amd m265x, i hope i did a good choice :p

Anyway, reading around the interwebs i found out that my gpu is basically an underclocked m270x, so i decided to install a program to try and overclock it a little bit.
However, when i opened up the oc'ing program (even before overclocking it) i noticed the temperature indicator was stuck at 511ºC, which obviously is a bug.
I played a few games without ocing it and ocing it and i noticed the indicator sometimes showed a more "realistic" value, like 60, 70, 80, but then always switched to 511.

I downloaded a few other monitoring programs but in those the temp was always 511ºC.

Should i worry much about this? I just picked up this laptop and still havent installed office and suchs because im afraid ill have to take it to the store again :\

Any help would be great :)

It sounds like your internal temperature sensor is broken. You could RMA it for that reason, as you wouldn't know if it was realistically overheating or not.

And now on that OC'ing program (sapphire trixx btw) the "real" temperature is appearing every 5-10 seconds for a few moments and then switches back to 511, i might pass by the store again :\

Just return it and get a new one - exchange it. Problem solved.

Most stores allow returns up to X amount of days after purchase for any reason.

Sounds a bit strange that a resistance sensor could break and work /once in a while/.. But yeah, if the sheath for the thing breaks, the resistance should increase and get stuck at whatever maximum the material has pretty much right away. So it sort of sounds like that's what has happened.

You should've gotten an NVIDIA GPU.

I was gonna get a 840m but this one seemed better on paper (and on benchmarks...)

..Are you sure it's not just the overclocking program reading the wrong sensor, or putting the wrong number in the wrong bracket, that sort of thing? Those r9 cards are fairly recent, after all.

And yeah, if you're not interested in the dynamic clocking on the maxwell cards (if you're playing games and want stable performance -- in all probability you're not), the other card is a good one. Also, mantle optimisations. Unfortunately, you need an apu paired up with it to get the most out of the setup. But still..
