The GeForce Go 7900 GS in my Inspiron E1705 decided to start running hot today. It's running about 20 degrees (celsius) hotter than it usually does, and nothing I can do seems to affect it.
Basically, I tried playing HL2 today. That game should run fine on my laptop, but it was stuttering and freezing. I decided to install new drivers. After uninstalling the old ones and restarting, I noticed my GPU's temperature was steadily rising into the sixties, and even reaches the seventies before I finished installing the driver and turned my computer off.
The problem persisted after I turned it on later (I gave it time to cool off) so I decided to stop overclocking. I flashed it with the stock bios and even after that it was running hot.
I've now gone through several drivers, ending up on the official nVidia driver for this card. I've also cleaned out the vents as best as I can. It idles at 70-75 and it peaked during some gaming at 92, which I fear is rather hot. It used to run at around 55 and peak at 75 or so.
Any reasons you can think of as to why it's running so hot now?
EDIT: I also have the fan control program forcing fans to high speed right now.

How about using some air cans to dust out the laptop vents? Not that clogged vents would increase your temprature by 20 deg so drasitcally, but maybe that might help lower the temps a little.
-
Just a guess here but could it have been that you started to dry out the thermal compound by cranking it up too high? I also second the compressed air if you haven't already done that. But 70/90 idle/load? That's crazy, my HD2600 hits ~47/~55 under idle/load under max performance settings. You should definitely be getting something closer to that.

Well, I guess I was just stupid, because I just tried cleaning out the vents and fans one more time and suddenly I'm idling at 43.
Sorry for a useless topic. -
). But anyways, that's what we're here for, help out with things you don't know. And there are lots of, more "useless" threads than this one so you're still in the clear.

For the G1s, it has unreasonably high GPU temperatures. So high that when compared to other laptops, its like overheating at idle already. It's a sad fact, but that is normal for a G1s.
I believe the G1, with the Ge7700 had idling and gaming temps near other laptops with similiar cards. I really want to know why our 8600m gt is running so hot. The GDDR3 memory could be a factor, but faster memory causes temp to be higher by 20-30c? Don't understand the logic behind this.
I might consider opening up it someday to apply some AS5. -
most places say AS5 is worthless (comes from resellers too)... they say they put it in to make customers feel happy and safe

AS5 is a good amount better than most stock cheap TIM's. When I replaced the stock stuff on my c90 with AS5 I got nearly a 5c drop in temps.
When I replaced my motherboard chipset on my desktop with AS5 I got a 7c drop in temps. -
AS5 is absolutely worth it, I've been using it for years. Every time I've purchased a new product with a hsf I've used as5 and had a noticible improvement.

I don't think anything short of liquid nitrogen will bring down my G1S temps.
