    Hey guys,

Back with a problem with my hp dv6-7000.
While playing Borderlands 2, the gt 650m (2 gb gddr5) acts really strange!
When i play the game, it runs really smooth initially. I play on 1080p and high settings while the fps is around 50-60.
But after 1 minute i see a drop in GPU usage which lowers the fps ofcourse...
The usage % drops from 99 to 70-80. This occurs every time i play the game! When i open the menu/pause, the usage increases back to 99%. When i continue playing it drops back to 70-80..
While playing bf3 this also is the case, but not as bad as in BL2.. Instead, the usage% drops to 85%
While playing far cry 3 on high, there is no drop in usage, but the fps is pretty low (25-35fps)

At first, i thought the heat might be a problem, so i bought a notepal u3 to lower the temps.
It works really great for me and the temperatures never exceed 75 degrees celsius while playing Borderlands.
I also updated the driver for the graphics card. Worth mentioning: i did a slight overclock( +135 core clock and +501 memory clock via MSI afterburner).

Any idea's what the problem could be?

    Greets,

    Mistyque

Lose the overclock and see what happens.

if the gpu is 75c what temps are you getting with cpu cores. this can downclock or throttle as well when high.

The cpu temps are also relatively low, i would say around 80c.
I will test the game tomorrow at lower clocks

I don't know.... isn't 80C pretty high? Although it does depend on the cooling. No idea how good the cooling is on that....

The cooling system on any hp laptop sucks pretty badly.
Without countermeasures the cpu will reach 105c

105C, that is the Intel cut off

Maybe the cooling vents are blocked, or HP used cheap thermal material (more thank likely), I would take it apart, apply a new themal paste and clean the cooling system.

What I am sure that is happening with your system is that it is throttling itself from melting, that would explain the low usage, as the CPU is being clocked down.

The heat is not the problem i think!
I bought the notepal u3 notebook cooler, and while playing for several hours, both cpu and gpu will get to 80-85C on Battlefield 3 (playing on ultra, 99% gpu usage and good fps)
There is no dip in gpu usage while playing bf3 or far cry 3, it's just borderlands...
    It also crashed twice today.
I undid the overclock, but it did not help increasing gpu usage. The fps also decreased.

Im aware of the cheap thermal paste HP used, but im afraid of breaking the laptop. I cleaned the fans a few weeks ago.
I have to stick with it for a while...
