I couldn't find any definitive answer to this question. I have recently upgraded to a 9600M GT DDR3 card and it seems to whine a little when under load. The whine stops once ati tools is aborted and load is removed. Is this noise acceptable as my old 8600M GT never made a noise

It is not the fan as it comes directly from the card this is with the panel off the bottom and ear to it to make sure. The whine is almost certainly electrical.

Lol really comforting comments! It seems there are a couple of threads on here where people had same issue but nothing much to go on..the card otherwise performs fine .. at the moment

CPU whine is quite common and is caused by the transitors oscillating at a frequency audible to humans. This usually can be fixed by a BIOS upgrade or in some cases by disabling the C4 state of the CPU (usually with RMClock).

The whine usually sounds like a high pitched sqealing and I only experinced it during idle and fixed it with a BIOS upgrade but that was with a Clevo M860TU.

It doesn't affect performance (of the computer at least, I know my concentrating performance was severely affected) and doesn't damage anything but is most annoying.

I assume the same whine could happen to a GPU and the solution would be somewhat similar.

It is the voltage regulators on the Nvidia cards. It is a symptom for nearly every new Nvidia model since the 8800, but it seems to affect individual cards at different stages. Nvidia hasn't addressed it with their reference design, but other custom designs have.

I haven't tried the nail polish method myself, but maybe it will work if you decide not to return your card.

I think the card might be faulty as it also runs very hot 100C + have seen it hit 105C in ATI tool at stock clocks. Heatsink is properly fitted and all. Previous 8600 never hit more than 86C overclocked to similiar level although it used slower DDR2 memory

Ouch, that is hot. I think you should consider returning it.

Did you use a good thermal paste when you were installing the new card?

haha I am not such a newb to forget that. Anyways I have decided to return this card while I still have right of return, a whine coupled with a good 20C+ more than it should be have made up my mind. Thanks all for the advice

edit: for laughs I OCed the card to 600/1500/900 and it was rock stable although temps hit 111C !! Thought I should mention that as it seems odd that it doesn't throttle at such ridiculous temps unless the temp sensor is screwed on the card ...

My 8600 overclocked gets at 86c and I find it high but now that I learn that 8800 reaches 111c I am happy with my 8600 :D

King of Interns, don't worry about it. This is perfectly normal. My GTX 280M also gives a faint oscillating high pitch hum when running ATITool's artifact scanner.

The C90S is notorious for overheating on both the CPU and the GPU. Walk with me to NBR Cooling Central.

I guess 9600M GT would never make a noise.
Because it uses heatsink, not fan.
Maybe your processor clashes with your 9600M GT.
So, your got tecnno music. XD!

Are you that desperate to increase your postcount to the extent that posting complete nonsense becomes a hobby of yours? Provide evidence that 9600m GT cards are cooled using a heatsink alone and not fans like practically all other notebooks equipped with fans.

I've a pair of 8800m GTX in my laptop, that noise you referred is apparently quite common; though it only occurs during heavy 3D load.
