    Hi

Both of these games are running quite slow on my notebook, which is:

    dell m1710
    2.16ghz dual core 2
    2 gig ram
    Geforce 7950gtx
    WUGXA screen
    Vista home premium

All other games that I have tried work pretty well. Company of Heroes runs great maxed out on highest resolution. Counterstrike too runs and looks lovely. Bioshock runs nicely at WSXGA.

But GRAW2 and R6 barely limp along at lower resolutions set at medium.

I've installed the latest drivers for my card and patched GRAW2, but it hasn't made the slightest difference.

    Any ideas?

First of all it's worth mentioning those games are a ***** to play, on my desktop 8800GTS (or rather, when I actually had it) GRAW 2 was prone to slowdown at high settings, as was Rainbow Six Vegas at max settings. I know you made a point of saying you were only running at middling settings, but my card is much better then yours. Both the games you mentioned, in fact, are notoriously poorly optimised for PC, and both work better on Ati cards.

That said the poor performance may not be 100% down to poor optimisation as the Go7950GTX is a very powerful card, but it's worth remembering.

    Right, cheers for that.

The difference in playabilty between high and low settings (and resolutions) was largely insignificant in both games. Even on low, they are unplayable.

Initially I thought it may have to do with the Unreal Engine, but of course, Bioshock uses that too and plays brilliantly.

What bothers me is that the games don't, at least in my opinion, appear to look as aesthetically pleasing as their system requirements would lead you to expect.

I really do hope the upcoming PC release of Gears of War doesn't run like this!

GRAW2 and R6 Vegas are both made by Ubisoft Montreal and are published by Ubisoft. Both games aren't optimized for the PC. Go figure.

I've got a very similar setup to you (see my sig for specs), and RSV plays fine for me at near max settings (the resolution isn't set to the max, because my laptop doesn't support 1600x1200, so I use the one just below that), but all other settings are maxed. I don't know my exact frame rate, but I do know it's not choppy at all, and looks amazing.

Which driver are you using? I've been using forceware 162.18, with no problems. I've also breifly tried 163.44 and 163.16 but changed back to 162.18 because I had a problem with Oblivion on those other two.

    Hey,

I'm using the Vista 32 bit 163.44 driver from laptopvideo2go. It really upped the performance on Bioshock from the ready installed stock drivers.

RV6 tends to run a little better that GRAW2, but it's hardly smooth.

I'll try the same driver as yours when I get home and see if that has any positive impact.

    cheers

Hi, i am recently looking forward to buy rainbow six vegas.

My question is, is the game worth buying? I mean, as you guys mentioned, its buggy and not meant for pc. So is there any possibility that ubisoft will release patch that will fix those problem?

And btw i will be playing it on my 5920G, i don't mind setting minimum setting to play the game and 800x600 resolution. I've seen my friend playing and its still quite nice.

Yeah the good thing about the game is that it still looks quite well on 800x600 on low settings, but I think the 8600MGT should be able to manage a good deal better then that. Though never underestimate how horrible a port that game is, there will be section where even a 8600MGT will get totally bogged down even on generous medium settings.

I would like to mention that you may want to do a few Google searches. I don't have the game for PC myself, but I know of a few people who told me there were several INI tweaks that could be done to the game(RV6 specifically, not sure about GRAW2) to improve it's performance.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's worth a shot right?

GRAW plays at 1280x800 on medium on my GDDR3 8600m GT averaging 30 FPS. That's with a fully optimized computer and game running on the BIOSHOCK drivers.

I maxed everything out and was running on a resolution of 1440x1050. But that caused some lag. By the way, I was running GRAW on my desktop.

You should be able to play the game at 800x600 with ~20 to 25 fps. The performance difference at that resolution with different settings isn't huge on newer nVidia cards, so you should be able to manage medium settings, maybe even some high.

And the problem with this game is due to extremely poor optimization, particularly with regards to texture compression, and it's highly unlikely any patch could fix it, as it would require a major rewrite of the codepath.
