What cards are equivalent to the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.Which are worse which are better?
When it says Pentium(R) 4 2.4GHZ
does that mean its better than Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26 GHz?
-
no...any core 2 duo will beat the p4.
-
Most game developers refer to Intel's embarrassing Pentium 4 in order to describe game requirements. The problem is that the Pentium 4 relies on sheer clock speed for it's performance, while modern CPUs such as the Pentium M, Core Duo, and Core 2 Duo do not. These Pentium M based CPUs are not only dual-core, but they also complete more executions per clock; meaning that they don't need to run at 3GHz to match a P4. As the member above said, even the lowliest Core 2 Duo will beat a top-of-the-line Pentium 4 simply because the architecture design is superior.

How bout the graphics cards? Rep to both of you

i also keep seeing core quad. Is that better than the 2.26 I have?
-
Performance benefits from quad core CPUs depends on all the elements in the equation. If the game is multi-threaded, then the software will utilize all 4 cores, and that CPU will complete tasks more quickly than a single-core or dual-core CPU.
Because silicon technology reached the thermal envolope and stretched it's stability years ago with the Pentium 4 architectures, chip makers are relying on cramming in more cores on to a CPU die in order to continue on with the tradition of improving performance. So, for today's games, a quad core CPU is somewhat impractical (for a laptop); but, in time, they will become mainstream as chip makers figure out how to make them run cooler and software developers design their products to execute across multiple threads.
I believe that ATI's 4650 would rival Nvidia's 9600M, but don't quote me on that.

Thanks i also just read the thread about the graphics card explained. I feel like Im set to play games at atleast medium settings for the next 2-3 years
