Hi. I have an Alienware M15x with GT 240m and no matter what i am doing, be it games or typing a word document gpu-z says it is constantly at
    core: 405
    memory: 324
    shader: 810
I have it overclocked using EVGA precision to core880/memory948/shader1936 and even if i put back to default it says these same clocks no matter what i am doing. Does anybody have a solution to this madness?

    Use Nvidia System Tools instead.

880 Core & almost 2k Shader ?????? did you test these speeds ? thats way too much I think your GPU is throttling

Try rebooting. My M11xR1 locks to those clocks if I crash in 3D.

its running those clocks at 48 celcius i thought throttling is for when it overheats. Im sort of new to like overclocking and stuff so what is testing the clocks?

hmm..... I dont think there is any chance in the universe you can run these clocks with 48 C temp. I think ur overclocks aren't applying .... try to use another program

try msi burner. see if that works or evga precision. then run furmark. and watch temps

WOW. this brings a whole new light upon me. I installed nvidia system tools, overclocked it to 700/900/1500 and ran furmark. this is litterally the first time i have heard the gpu fan go on in the 4 months i have owned this computer. after about 10 minutes at that clock in furmark it was steady at 69C. what is a good temperature to have it at and also is there a certain ratio i should be following as far as the clocks?

It is best to keep the core:shaders:memory ratio identical to the stock one.

69C in Furmark is a good temperature. Try running it in extreme burning mode though.

You can go up to 80C without any concern (in extreme burning mode).

If You OC any component in Your laptop, get a decent laptop cooler.

Also test ur overclocks in different games & do a through stability test like for a couple of hours .... some games may crash on certain overclocks or show artifacts while others dont on same clocks

luckily this is the only component i will be overclocking, because i have the i7 720qm which is impossible to overclock to my knowledge, although today was the hottest day so far this year where i live, does the outside temperature make any impact on the inside temperature of the laptop? or just how much heat i feel. the furmark test i ran was a stability and it seemed to not get any hotter after about 10 minutes at 69 C but i will try burn now and see..., also thanks for the tip on the ratio : )

i7-720QM can be overclocked using SetFSB tool, however You need to know, what PLL chip does Your machine use.

Ambient temperature has direct impact on temperatures of laptop components.

Why? I find that boosting memory on my (admittedly red-team) Radeon 5730 provides a much, much larger boost to performance than boosting core speed. I just maxed both out and to heck with the ratio-- it's how I've always overclocked, how I learned to do it, and how I get my best results. Should I not do it this way or...?

Keeping the ratio applies only to nVidia cards (and only in laptops). With ATi it has no use.

An artifact is simply an error in displayed graphics. It can be caused by many factors, some of them being: overheating, too little voltage, too high GPU and/or RAM clock, error in a driver.

    Artifacts may look like this:

several times since the first time i OCd my graphics card my computer will freeze and have these little things looking like the ones in the first picture all over the screen but i cant move mouse or do anything except power off with power button. was that an artifact caused by weird clocks?

Yes, it was. The clocks were way too high though if the computer froze. You could either lower the clocks or increase the voltage on the GPU a bit.

how does one increase voltage to the gpu?

I think you will have to do a Vbios mod for that ... but I really don't think missing with the voltages is a good idea if you don't know what you are doing .... it is safer to overclock within your current voltage pool

Ok I don't think I should take that risk. I think I will upgrade to a gtx260m soon anyway and hopefully I will be abble to get higher clocks with that.
