Hey peeps,
I am looking to move from my Alienware M15X to the Lenovo Y510p which comes with the GT 750M SLI card.
I understand that it really depends on whether anot the games are optimize for SLI. However should the game could only utilized a single GT 750M, I would like to know how will it fair against the 3-4year old 5850M (Stock timing)?
Reason being for the upgrade is that I will like to move towards a more power efficient 4th gen i7 instead of sticking on the M15X with 1st gen i7 and just upgrading the card.
Thanks again for your time and valuable input~

A single 750M would be a bit faster but not by a whole lot, assuming you have the 5850 GDDR5. But the Y510p with SLI is well-known for overheating, something which is probably a foreign concept to your Alienware.
What I really think you should do is get an i7-920XM or 940XM and Radeon 7970M and upgrade the M15x instead of buying a whole new notebook. It would be cheaper than getting a new Y510p SLI as well as faster. Once you overclock the XM chip it should hold up well in modern games. One of the greatest strengths of the Alienwares and Clevos is their upgradeability and you've still got good options to modernize that M15x so I think it's too soon to consign it to the pile of has-beens. It still has a lot of life left in it.
Also I think you should post this in the Alienware section as I'm sure many M15x owners on here have done the exact same upgrade I've just proposed so they can give you some helpful advice and pointers. -
Probably could even just upgrade the GPU only depending on the games you play.. A first gen i7 can still eek out enough gas

Thanks for fellow forumers for the prompt response. I am running the M15X on the 920XM. but I was thinking of trading the unit in for a Y510P with GT 750 SLI with a couple of hundred of top up.
Thus my question on performance, on the single GT 750m against the Good,o 5850m as I understand the SLI GT 750 blows it wide open.
open to more feedback..before joining the Y510p club.
Btw anyone have a pic of the y510p board with parts expose? will like to see and understand the heatsinks and cooling areas. -
Please don't get rid of that M15x, the upgrade potential it has is amazing, just check out the forums about that machine.
Edit - just noticed this was pointed out already.....
Really though with a 7970m it would be a sweet machine.octiceps likes this. -

But if you already have a 920XM, is there any reason why you won't upgrade the M15x? You could get a 7970M and 1-1.5TB SSD and extra RAM for the cost of a Y510p and it will be considerably faster, not to mention the better cooling and build quality of the Alienware. The Y510p runs very hot and throttles to keep temperatures in check, and many SLI owners have found out to their dismay that their Ultrabay GPU's run close to 100C no matter what.

I definetly would suggest you OC your 920XM with some good thermal paste applied to it and get a 7970M... It will be more than enough for your 15x to last for 2 years...

The 770m is also a good cheaper option for the M15x

Thanks all for the valuable feedback on this matter.....

Greets to all,
Yes, I have swap the M15X for the Y510p SLI.... after a day of use, I realize that heat is simply a major issue with this laptop.. kinda miss my m15X cooling structure and keeping temps in-check. I am particularity impress by 4700MQ CPU performance over the 920XM, even at clock for clock and single thread application 4700MQ have a 10-25% lead over the 920XM.
Right now since the deed is done, I am looking to optimize the Y510P performance and heat ratio and is looking to underclock the GPU & Ultrabay GPU to prevent overheating. Anyone have any ideas how to reduce clock rate and unvolt if possible, let me know.
Cheerios~ -
For GPU - NVIDIA Inspector.
Also try repasting the GPU/CPU, if you haven't already. Often you can do a much better pasting job yourself than the assemblers of the laptop do at the factory.kyo86sg likes this. -

I think once the warranty is over, I got to make plans to mod the base chassis to enhance cooling of the system. *realise that without the base chassis, differential of idle temps are 10-15 degrees~ -
I am guessing you where drawn to the flame (did it again, can't help it... it's a sickness really) by the sweet temptation of SLI. Am I right? If so, I understand that. I struggling with the same regarding my new laptop purchase. I am most likely going with a Sager 17" model of some sort, which of course has more cooling capacity. -
*realize how silly Lenovo comes out with a whitelist for its Wifi cards on laptops now. Gone are the days , where one just could mix and match. -

Lol and now he is looking to underclock the gpus haha. Considering he had the 920xm he simply have stuck the 680m and enjoyed superior performance at a cheaper price......
