I found one Chiniese Forum where both versions of the card are testen in benchmarks and games.

The cards run same GPU speed but:
Card 1 has DDR3 clocked at 900mhz. Memory bandwith of 28,8GBs.
CPU of the notebook is i5-2.
Card 2has GDDR5 clocket at 1000mhz. Memory bandwith of 64.0GBs.
CPU of the notebook is i7-2
So heres the results:
3DMVantage GPU score:
DDR3 29671
GDDR5 35334
Difference +19%
3DM11 GPU score:
DDR3 2145
GDDR5 2156
Difference +0.5%
Heaven 2.5
DDR3 750
GDDR5 777
Difference +3.6%
Games:
Street Fighter 4
DDR3 136fps
GDDR5 163fps
Difference +19.4%
Resident Evil 5
DDR3 66.5fps (weaker CPU bound)
GDDR5 121.4fps
Difference +83%
Lost Planet 2
DDR3 26.6fps
GDDR5 31.8fps
Difference +19.5%

Discussion welcome.

Good post. I wish they did testing on some more games though. I wonder how high the 650m GDDR3 can OC.

I bought a lap with a GT 650M on board for a awful cheap price. Will test it soon.
The lap has 1024mb on board so i assume it's GDDR5 cause DDR3 seems to come with 2048mb of memory.
Anyway even if it's ddr3 performances seem awesome compared to previous gen. -
I think you should be able to overclock this GDDR5 GPU up to 570M performance since GTX 660M is exactly there. And still enjoy the same cool temperatures as 660M. After all, 640M, 650M and 660M is the exact same card.
Thanks for the benchmarks Supranium. Interesting to see how faster memory acts -
GDDR5 GT650M is identical with GTX660M.
Even bios flash should work. -
-
Read again and think before you post.
I was talking about flashing the GT650M with GTX660M bios. Obviously the card would run with GTX660M voltages and speeds if flashed.
Ofcourse IF GT650M is not MXM version of the card, it probably will not work. However, it shouldnt harm to try, since u can always flash back from Intel IGP enabled. -
Even if it were MXM, there's no guarantee that it'll run at 650m speeds. Depends on how well the particular chip is binned.
-

Also depends if the power circuitry supports the new voltage.
-
Yes, theres several but´s.
However, if flash works, it will run at GTX660M speeds ofcourse. -
I don't think a flash 650m to 660m will work, even if it crazily worked out, one of them is 75W the other is 45W, then the cooling solution of laptop would be dead I guess (assuming you buy 650m in an ultrabook)
-
Ofcourse the safest solution would be just to OC 650M with AB for games which need additional juice.
-
LOL great thread
-
Is 650M MXM 3.0b like 660M? I've found a seller on ebay that sells 660M mxm3.0b modules but my laptop is compatible with 3.0A only and I would like to upgrade the graphics card.
-
I don't think there are any mxm versions of the 650m right now.
-
GT 650M is soldered on most laps i think. I asked DevilTech and their msi barebones have a soldered GT 650M. Same for GT 650M clevo barebone i guess.
-
Yes. Clevo W150erq is soldered and has 1GB GDDR5.
However, there should be MXM version coming soon, because Malibal said they will offer it on P150 soon.
Perhaps they made mistake and its still GTX660M instead. -
Nice find, thanks
kinda sad there's such a difference..
-
-
Say, why did they use crappy resolutions (1280*720 / 1366*768) ? The higher the res the bigger the difference between the two is supposed to be.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
native res of the screen, also likely the native res of the screen you will find this chip in.
-
I'm more interested in a more direct comparison such as between a w110er and a w150er as they can both have the same CPU.
-
The difference will be about same. Only one of those games in test were CPU bound. In most games, same clock speed i5 = i7. Difference is non existant.
-
-
so does anyone wanna try flashing to a gtx 660?
-
Wait a sec, I don't think the GT 650m and GTX 660m are the same card and can be flashed:
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
Sure, they both have a GK107 core, but a glaring difference I see is that the 650m has a memory speed of 900mhz while the 660m has 2000mhz. Do you guys really think an 1100mhz overclock would be feasible? And is this the biggest reason why the 660m is faster than the 650m? -
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
DDR3 = 900mhz
The higher speed is quoted for GDDR5. -
-
proof that it runs at 2000mhz:

Meaker@Sager Company Representative
yep base clock 1000mhz which since GDDR5 gives you twice the bandwidth per mhz is quoted as 2000mhz
-
so back to my original question, anyone brave enough to flash a gtx 660 image?

i would totally do it but i havent gotten my new computer yet
besides if it didnt work you would be able to flash it back from the intel gpu! -

Since your graphics "Card" is a soldered chip, the video bios is integrated into the system bios most likely which means it's not so straight forward.
Also you risk bricking the entire machine. -
been there done that.. haha, if you brick it, i just pulled the cmos battery for about a minute or two.

I'm also brave enough to try

1. Extract system bios 2. Extract vbios 3. Struggle to decode the strings and edit the values 4. Compress everything back to normal 4. Flash 5. Hope

Kind of silly question but i know no other place to ask regarding the gdd3 version.Would you expect it to run games like diablo 3 and guild war 2 on hd+ full details ? I`m about to chose between a laptop with the gdd3 version and a gtx 570m but i don't know what is the real difference between them :-s

thanks a lot.your answers helped me

Baenwort (and anyone else who could help) Im thinking about getting the Asus N56VZ and was wondering if it would have the same performance as it does on your clevo. It is also the GDDR3 version. Im not really very savvy when it come to graphics cards. I play Skyrim and sometimes Crysis and BF3 and want to make sure they will run well with it before i get it.
-
If the N56VZ has a IVB Quad core and the 650M GDDR3 then it should run about the same. You're best bet is to find someone with that exact machine in the owners thread for it. I'm not following 15.6" and larger machines at all.
Typically if a system has the same CPU/dGPU and >4GB of memory it will perform about the same for gaming. This is provided that the system is able to run everything at full speed with out heat or power issues causing throttling. From all I recall Asus typically doesn't have heat or power issues, and consequently, like Clevo, tends to have thicker and heavier machines as a result. -
I've heard that the GT650m has a problem with overclocking because of the turbo. Can anyone else confirm this?
-
Also, I plan on oc'ing my 650m in my W110ER, good idea?
