AM running GTA 4 on a dell 1710 Gefroce 7950GTX OC'd and a 2,2 GHZ core 2 duo CPU and 3 GB ram. I run it all on lowest and 1024x768 resolution. I only have textures at medium, but the game still lags very much, i guess like 15 fps and each 3 seconds it does 0 fps for a half second.

is this normal for this game?

I use the newwest dox drivers, 195.xx

Try downloading processxp (microsoft's better task manager) and seeing what's eating up your CPU cycles / IO bandwidth. I had an issue w/ periodic stuttering from the dnscache service accessing a hosts list once in a while because spybot configured my system to do this.

Make sure you are updated to patch 1.0.04 for the best performance. I do not recommend you update to the latest patch on that system.

Did you always get 2000 in 3dMark? I can't imagine playing GTA4 on anything less than maybe 7000 3dMarks.

I run about 20-30fps with a lightly OC'd 9800m GS. OCing the CPU really helps this game, it's quite physics intensive.

I think that should be getting ~4000-5000 marks in 3DMark06.

Use Game Booster, closes unused background processes. If you want an advanced program, use Advanced SystemCare, which cleans and optimizes your PC, has a lot of features.

I dunno what went wrong, but now am getting slightly over 6000 3dmarks06 and i overclocked my gpu.

The game runs now 1024x768 all other settings lowest possible averaging 24 fps in the GTA4 benchmark. It looks however so horrible i might just play San Andreas.

The game is in steam so i dont know what patch it uses, i guess the latest one.

That sounds a lot better. GTA4 is very finicky with settings, I sometimes got equal or better performance from medium settings.

the ingame benchmark is not accurate, most of the time you will get ~5-6 fps lower, and even if you get ~25 constant fps, the gameplay still doesn't feel smooth, because that game is basically made for console controllers, on keyboard it sucks

The Steam version will be patched to the latest automatically which means you will miss out on the better performance of the 1.0.04 patch.

make sure you are not playing on power saver in battery options.also try to select medium setings and your native resolution and i bet you will be getting same fps as your cpu is the bottleneck in this case.

yeah this sounds about right. I can run it with a go 7950 at stock clocks with a core 2 @2.3 and average about 21 fps. It's borderline unplayable.

I think it´s your GPU that is the culprit. GTA IV is pretty shader intensive and the go 7950GTX just can´t play the newer games any good. It´s not using the unified architecture of the newer GPU´s. I am pretty sure even a 8600m GT plays the game better at that low res of 1024x768.

I see, il try exchange this laptop for a 5730 and a core3 something. That should be enough and run more quiet as well

2 things: - His system is not good enough to run the game, at those settings anyway.
    - GTA IV is still a cheap port.

Yup the game is horrible optimized, now a play Crysis Warhead at high settings which should be a demanding game, so i guess GTA 4 is just retarded

yup it is... if u run crysis , ur laptop should be good enough.. it looks like u have a driver problem.. u should be getting 5000-6000 3D Mark 06.. update to latest 186.81 or 195.62 drivers...
