Hey guys, I finished the game a few years ago but I saw some cool youtube videos these days and it brought back some nice memories. I would like to play the game again, but I am sure there are a lot of good mods that appeared since then. I am mostly interested in realism mods with some nice cars, and maybe even some performance improvments (I know I can't make wonders with my machine, but I remember there was some kind of huge pack that changed the entire game textures and improved the FPS a bit).
So, if there is still someone that is playing the game, I would like to know what mods he is using, cause this is the fun in GTA games :)
Also, I want to know at what game version should I update, I remember that if I pass above one of the patches it will affect my performance lot, is 1.0.5 the last one I should update at?

You should update it to 1.0.0.4.
    I'd recommend:
iCEnhancer (v2.0 is almost out) (you're gonna have to disable a few settings like Ambient Occlusion and FXAA for it to run smoothly)
    Better City Textures by 0hiena0
    Traffic Load v3

    Optional:
    Realistic Driving mod
    Sexy Hookers mod v3.0
    In-Car Animation Mod
    Blood Mod v6
Bullet Impact Euphoria v1.2 by Prof_Farnsworth

Thank you! Can you also recommend any specific site I can take them all from?

Nope, just google. Here's the modding guide, if you haven't read it:

I - How to make your version modable

--What's most important here is your game version.

--If you have the retail version, you can choose whichever patch you want to update to:

--If you have the Steam Version, your game is automatically installed as the 1.0.7.0 Version (EFLC 1.1.2.0),
but you can downgrade your version to any of the afore mentioned patches and use RSCG to run the game. Or follow these
      instructions:

--There are two popular and recommended methods to setting your game up to be moddable
There are pros and cons depending on your system and mods configuration,
so keep that in mind and always have a backup and possibly a second backup.
These pros and cons include FPS, stability, feature increases/decreases

      1. Fully Updated to version 1.0.7.0 (EFLC 1.1.2.0)
This version is less compatible with the majority of mods that have not
been updatedby their creators, but is generally most stable, full featured
and optimized (again, sort of speculative)

    II - Script Mods
    ___________________________________________________________

--Whats most important here is that you've completed part I and are iether running
      1.0.7.0 (EFLC 1.1.2.0) or 1.0.4.0

--Script mods come in various packages, but usually have instructions on what to put where
While its best to follow those instructions, it is good to know where basic files need to go

    	1. .Net Scripthook looks like this:
    		mymod.net.dll
    		mymod.ini
    		mymod.vb
Place these files and any other files that come with the mod in:
    	   				GTAIV/scripts

    	2. ASI Scripthook looks like this:
    		mymod.asi
    		mymod.ini
Place these files and any other files that come with the mod in:
    	   				GTAIV/

Some will also work if you place them in:	GTAIV/plugins
but some will not (simple trainer works but will
not read from its ini file if placed in plugins folder)

    --Popular places for mods:

    		 Mod Assistant: [http://www.gtagaming.com/downloads/gta-iv/tools/1828]
Might be helpful, but havent used yet

--Be sure to read the readmes of the mods u download, there may be instructions on how to activate
      them if necessary
Not all mods are active the moment you enter the game world... (AW2010)

--Now your game can run script mods, Yay--

    ___________________________________________________________

--Whats most important here is to BACKUP!!!!! Then once you have a backup, then you BACKUP AGAIN!!!!
Seriously, BACKUP, you probably will encounter problems and crashes before you figure this out on your own system

--There are two popular tools for adding/ replacing mods to GTA IV

    	1. Spark IV: [http://www.gtainside.com/en/download.php?do=comments&cat=326&id=28310]

    	2. Open IV: [http://openiv.com/]

--Either one you choose, extract their files to a new folder inside your GTA IV directory:
    					  GTAIV/SparkIV
    					  GTAIV/OpenIV

--Vehicle/object/texture mods will usually come with these files, but don't always have or need handling/color/veh data, but will
always have and or wtd files:
    		  mycar.
    		  mycar.wtd
readme.txt <----- mod authors usually put handling/color/veh data in their readme.

--These vehicle files (/wtd) are imported to vehicles.img using Spark IV or Open IV:
    					  GTAIV\pc\models\cdimages\vehicles.img
You will have to learn to use these tools from another more visual tutorial...theres plenty...google it
--The vehicle data provided in the readmes will be copied into and over their respective places in:
    					  GTAIV\commomn\data\handling.dat
    					  GTAIV\commomn\data\carcols.dat
    					  GTAIV\commomn\data\vehicles.ide
Use a standard text editor such as notepad to open these files

-- The steps are simple, once you get used to the program.
    	1. Import wtd/ to vehicles.ide with either tool - save, rebuild, exit program
    	2. Copy handling data provided into handling.dat
    	3. Copy carcols data into carcols.dat
    	4. Copy hehicle data into vehicles.ide

--Weapons objects and other spawnable game items are pretty much the same, but have their
respective img containers along with a couple other things

Use Grim's Weapon Pack as an example of how to get new weapons into the game:

--Now if your trainer spawns the right car, then your done, have fun driving a prius over pedestrians--

    ___________________________________________________________

    IV - Graphics Mods
    ___________________________________________________________

--Some graphics mods can be very involved, while others are very simple to install and look great right away; i will cover the latter...

--RealityIV, VisualIV, Overhaul, ENB and none other than iCEnhancer are considered graphics mods and are
      relatively easy to install.
Texture packs such as "Better Textures" are also usually easy to install, just follow their readmes
and your'll be fine (don't be a moron and you'll be fine)

--A general rule of thumb is that the mod creators will archive them the way they GTAIV folders are structured, so all you need to do is extract files and folders to their respective places in the GTAIV folders, overwriting where necessary.

Do you have the EFLC? If so, note that some mods may not work properly (graphically speaking).

Nop, I have the original GTA 4, I heard EFLC has patch 6 by default and runs like crap, my PC can't support it.

Hey I remembered the mod I used back then, it is called Realizm IV. I remember it is supposed to increase the performance a bit, but icenhancer looks really cool, will it run decent on my rig? 2.4 dual core is really low for this game.

That's right, the last two patches (5 and 6, if your count is right) really made GTA4 take a hit on many systems. I made the comment because I got it relatively recently and noticed that most of the best mods are not compatible with the EFLC (and consequently the latest patches).

If I buy the DVD version, can i control which patches I download?

I played this on the xbox 360 and really enjoyed it, so I'd like to play it on my new laptop.

Has anyone tried this game on a Dell XPS 17? I have model L702x with Windows 7 64 bit, 8 gigs of RAM, Ge Force GT 555M 3GB, I7 2760QM.

Just read the amazon reviews of GTA 4 and I think I'll pass on the PC version. All sorts of issues getting it to work on Windows 7. If I really want a sandbox game on my gaming laptop, I'll get Saints Row 3. I have SR2 on the xbox 360 and really enjoyed it.

No problems getting it to work on Windows 7 X64 but I would now recommend Saints Row The Third instead.

Yeah, I had no trouble getting it to run on Win 7 x64bit. Booted right up, installed mods, and played. Not a hitch.
