Just bought GTA IV, and started a new game and everything. Everything running fine, and I notice there is a Benchmark test.
So I run it, and see how it turns out, the benchmark ran weired, you couldnt see the road or surroundings, only the vehicle, and the gun fire shooting.
I thought nothing of it, and continued to load my game, and after loading, I noticed that I can see squat. I could only see the horizon, and everything else was not showing.
I have tried to load, and reload it, and even start a new game. It loaded up fine once, and at that point, I set the settings to low, and re-started the game, but the problem persisted.
Is there anything that I can do to fix it, short of re-installing the game?

at least post what driver version you are using.. Actually scratch that, go update your drivers to 180.84 before posting again.

same thing happened to me, i couldn't see the player, cars, or any walls. I just tried out a downloaded copy tho to see how it would run, hopefully the problems are fixed by christmas in case i get it, if not i was planning on buying it.
EDIT: that happened with 180.70 driver, and after updating to 180.84. -
I am using the 174.16 drivers. Any other drivers I try to use, after 30 minutes of playing any game, my driver crashes, and resets. 174.16 drivers seem to be the best fit for my video card.

Then your pretty much SOL. You need to find out why you can't update your drivers, because performance is just going to get worse and worse for new games. GTA IV is a game that is showing it needs quality hardware and quality drivers to make it run properly. Other than testing texture settings there's not much you can do. Rockstar has already said current drivers are a must.

I am only guessing it was an issue with the current drivers of a few months ago. I am trying the new 180 driver right now, so fingers crossed on if it wil work or not.
-
After testing, please post your game settings and we can work from there.

Well they seem to work fine. I have only started the game once, but it is working so far with no problems. I am getting better FPS now, then I was, and the settings are:
Video Mode: 1440x900
Texture: Medium
Render: Medium
I cannot increase the Texture Quality any more than that because it is using 421/496 MB of Resource Usage.
So far it is running fine. I had no idea the had drivers that would help improve the GTA IV gameplay. Thanks bwhxeon, I will notify this thread when I reload the game again. -
What about your distance settings? Those and shadow settings will be the ones that hurt your fps the most at this point. Glad updating the driver worked.

Detail: 37
Vehicle: 26
Shadow: 3
I am using the recommended Auto Configure settings. -
That's not bad at all then if its playable.
