I recently got into modding single player in GTA IV and since I haven't seen this mentioned here I thought I would share my favourite mods with you guys.
Before I do that I will briefly go over what you need to Mod GTA IV single player, beware that Multiplayer will get disabled if you use some of the mods since they can be considered cheating. Any Mods that change files such as the speed your vehicle can travel at or anything that will allow cheating will disable Multiplayer (and rightly so). I also suggest you do a copy your GTA IV folder and do the modding there.
GTA IV version 1.040 is the most mod friendly but 1.0.04 also works pretty well. Modding on the latest 1.0.05 patch also works perfectly as well as using Mods with the EFLC DLC.
However, modding the GFWL version is more straight forward than the Retail Disk version. With the GFWL version, you can just update to the latest Script Hook and (most) your current Mods will load but with the Disk version, you will need to Decrypt all of the content using this. Some say that some missions will no longer load in the EFLC (party over) after being unencrypted.
The following are what you need to Mod GTA IV:
Note: The last time I checked the official links for Scripthook were no longer working so I uploaded the latest one along with Dsound.dll for anyone who still needs them.
ScriptHook for 1.0.04
ScriptHook for 1.0.05
My upload mirror of Scripthook for 1.070 and Dsound.dll here.
Dsound.dll
To enable modding in GTA IV, you need to place dsound.dll and ScriptHook.dll into the main GTA IV directory where GTAIV.exe is. After you have done that you place the .asi file from the Mod you have downloaded into the same folder and then you will see it during gameplay. Some Mods will require different files but the ones I am using are simple since you just copy them to your directory and then edit the .ini configuration if you wish to change the activation keys or controls.
There are thousands of different GTA IV Mods and if you use any that you think others will like, please post here. Also feel free to post any questions you have on how to get any to work.
I found that running GTA IV patched version 1.040 alongside version 1.0.04 in different folders would cause a crash that I discovered was due to different settings existing or missing in either version, so I created the following batch file:
For increased safety you could replace the ''del *.*'' with the individual file names if you wanted to.
Before being able to do this I created a folder with my settings for each different patched version and saved that into a separate folder. This has allowed me to play my GTA IV on the latest patch both modded and unmodded with the performance increases I got with version 1.0.04 as well as allowing me to play at the older version 1.040 to test / run mods etc.
Using GTA IV patched to 1.0.04 along with a copy patched to 1.0.05 does not cause any crashes but you will need to change graphic settings to your liking each time because each version sees the settings as different.
The following are the Mods I am currently using:
1) Police Pursuit Mod
Police Pursuit Forum Thread WIP
Play as the LCPD and be the good guys for once. This mod allows players to take on the role as a Police Officer conducting police pursuits. Criminal offenses range from the minor traffic light runner or vehicle theft to a man carrying a rocket launcher. You can either wait for random police calls out or manually activate a pursuit mode. The mod focuses on police pursuits mainly and you can call backup and spawn police vehicles.

2) LCPD First Reponse

This Mod will only work with patch version 1.040 and not 1.0.04. When ScripthookDotnet has been updated, there is a chance that it might work though. This Mod seems to be more about the overall Police experience as opposed to the Pursuits.
3) VIP Kill & Rescue
This Mod adds many submissions to the game such as drug dealing, terrorist hunt, vigilante, delivery and more!
The last time I played this missions, a drug deal went wrong and I immediately got 3 or 4 stars and a police chase ensued. Another time the customer refused until I put away my weapon!
VIP Kill&Rescue forum release thread
4) Health regeneration
This Mod makes your health slowly increase over time. The rate is adjustable from the ini.
5) Robbery Mod
This Mod allows you to rob bank and museum vaults for cash rewards if you can escape the police!
6) Prison break mod!
This Mod places you in the Alderney State Correctional Facility if you are caught with too many wanted level stars. It's your mission to bust out - you have several options such as making bail, starting a riot, and more!
Note, you need to either use a Mod to unlock all islands or already have them unlocked for this one to work properly.

7) Car Bomber Mod
This Mod allows you to use an unlimited number of Packie's car bombs. Simply walk up behind a car and press the activation button to set the bomb. You can set bombs on multiple cars before detonating. Then press the detonation button to watch the cars go up in flames!
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2egmj8OVH4U&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2egmj8OVH4U&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='560' height="340"></embed></object>
8) Ride Along Mod
This mod allows you to enter the passenger seat of random vehicles on the road. I have found that you can do drive bys from the peds car and you will get chased by the police or rather, they will!
9) Bodyguard Mod
This mod allows you to spawn bodyguards in-game.You are given the ability to choose whether or not you want the guards to spawn invincible and what character model and weapon they should spawn with!
This Mod makes police chases, tough missions or general mayhem so much more fun!
Note that the person in the below clip went a little over board with the number of bodyguards they spawned, when I use this mod I spawn only 1 or 2 to keep it reasonable.

10) GTA IV Radio Mod
http://www.gta4-mods.com/script/radio-mod-f3651
I got fed up of changing the radio channel to my favourite one (IFM) each time I entered a car so I used this Mod to set my favourite as default. This Mod also allows you to play radio on foot as well as set the default radio for all safe houses.
11) Taxi Missions Mod
Taxi Missions Mod forum release thread
This Mod enables over 400 Taxi missions
12) RealiZM IV 6.2 Mod (without the textures and maps)
This mod improves graphical textures, improves vehicle handling, increases grenade explosions, adds more realistic blood and with the additional map textures download, some say it gives them better performance.
Earlier version here RealiZM IV 1.0
I used to use the earlier version because I got better performance with it until patch 1.0.04.
Realizm IV 6.2 will not work with 1.0.04 if you use the auto installer because it installs the incorrect script files and filecheckfix. I got this working with 1.0.04 by manually installing. In other words, use the auto installer to install into an empty directory then copy that over to your GTA IV directory with the correct script files.
I have also got Realizm IV 6.2 to work perfectly with path 1.0.05, just copy over the biggest folder first and when you copy over the smaller sized ones, do it one folder a time and check that it runs. I have also got this Mod to work with patch 1.070. I have found the best way is to install GTA IV, install Realizm IV 6.2 full and then update to the latest official GTA IV patch.
Note: This Realizm IV 6.2 Mod improved my overall performance by about 10 fps. Repeated benchmarks also confirmed this.

13) Nerdook's Side Quests Mod

14) Ambient Wars Mod
Download and info
This will only work on version 1.040 until ScriptHook.Net has been updated for the latest and even after that, it is not 100% guaranteed to work again although it is likely.
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mPsTIh6IGVQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mPsTIh6IGVQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width='560' height="340"></embed></object>
15) No Into Mod
Forum download
This speeds up your GTA IV startup quite a bit.
16) Increase the mayhem!
Gangwars
This mod edits the relationships making it more likely that peds / gangs will fight or shoot you / each other. I have had the opportunity to test out this mod for a while and I notice a big difference. There are more peds being chased by police, if you discharge a weapon peds will try to shoot you with other peds joining in and often trying to shoot each other. Sometimes a huge shoot out will be the end result. It makes a nice change from before where 99% of the peds were just too well behaved for a GTA environment. Of course, if you want all out mayhem then the Ambient wars mod is more suited. This one is better suited to every day GTA game play.
17) Traffic Felony Mod

I had the multiplayer problem just from modifying the timecyc file meh... it gave me slightly better performance but gave us since it broke the MP... I hope they change that with the next patch...oh and Team Mafia Wars is epic lol
-
Oh now that is just to awesome. Going to have to try them all out, lol.

I didn't want to reply to this thread even if I was interested, since I thought of game modding as a gray area. However, it's still fun for Single Player.
What I did (THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS) I backed up the WHOLE GTA IV folder and made two separate folders for modded (single player) and unmodded folder.I also made the timecyc.dat mods, and installed a few visual tweaks here and there to make it run better on my entry-level 9300M GS.
Oh, and I did install a few car mods.I have yet to try these ones though. I'll try them when I get to upgrade to a 9600M GT.
-
Outrageous is the best way. I went a step further haha. I backed up the entire GTA folder, made one folder patched to 1.040 modded, one folder patched to 1.0.04 unmodded and then another folder patched to 1.0.04 modded. Then I used a batch file to run each version. Details can now be found in my original post. -
hey i'm interested in that realism mod,i googled it but couldn't find any good guide, it just says i need to patch it with "magic 4" or something, aplication, then i apply the mod
whats it talking about? -
Your best bet would be to google ''realizm iv 6.2 full version download''
I am currently using the Realizm 6.2 Mod with the standard missions, Bodyguard Mod, Police Pursuit Mod, health, carbomb, radio, Vip missions mod etc. To get that mod to work on 1.0.04 I recommend you use all of the auto installers and point them to an empty directory. After that, delete scripthook.dll, filecheckfix.asi, g4mhook.dll and dsound.dll. Just use those files from the links in my original post. -
googled it and can't find anything, only some torrents wich require $$ to download, and some of them im pretty sure are viruses

SO what exactly does the realizm mod do? Is it a GFX only mod, or does it do anything with the physx/core of the gameplay?
If it makes the graphics better then I will download it for sure. -
I actually can no longer play the standard GTA IV without this Mod because it looks so dull in comparison. Quite a few people don't seem to like this Mod though because they say it has too much bloom and it can look pretty bright.
Note that there are many other graphical Mods though, for example Visual IV, Environmental Mod and Enb series. You can also take parts of your favourite graphical mods and mix them together.
Note that the full Realizm IV 6.2 Mod is almost 5GB in size! -
1. How do I check the game version, or patched version I have?
2. Will this Mod work with D2D versions of the game?
Thx and +rep -
I am not sure if this Mod will work with D2D but if you do try, I suggest you do a complete copy / backup of the folder first before trying just in case it fails. The problem is that D2D uses its own protection, as you mentioned, so I can't be sure that filecheckfix will still work. Filecheckfix allows your modified files not to be blocked when you run the game so without that, it wouldn't work. I would just experiment.
There is another graphical mod I might try called ''Better City Textures'', it is 7.40GB thoughRelease Thread

spradhan01 Notebook Virtuoso
I just installed the mod of Lamborghini reventon and its succesfully installed. But I dont know how to get that car in game? Should I go to some specific location or use some cheat codes?
Thanks -

Noone interested in Lambo?

I have never installed any car mods so I have no idea. I would imagine that it would just work like any other car i.e you having to steal one somewhere. You could also try the mobile phone car spawn cheats to see if any of them spawn that particular car. -
Thanks for this thread.. It taught me how to install RealizmIV 6.2 on version 1.0.04! That's awesome.. At FIRST, I had perfectly followed your method of installing it manually, but my system was STILL crashing every time I tried to run the game.. I finally fixed it though.
Turns out, in addition to needing those updated script files you mentioned (& provided links for) above, I ALSO needed to AVOID using the version of:
Grand Theft Auto IV/common/text/american.gxt
which comes within "RealizmIV v6.2.exe"
The overwriting of THAT file is what kept causing my system to crash, and gave me a headache for a few hours. Through trial & error, uninstalling & reinstalling the game, & the mod several times, process of elimination, I finally determined that I simply needed to just KEEP the same version of "american.gxt" which I already HAD been using with my 1.0.0.4 game, and NOT the one from RealizmIV. NOW everything works fine
I'm even using the textures (the WHOLE 5GB realizmIV) now, on 1.0.0.4. More than ANYthing, I think I just like the shiny leather jacket I get to wear, instead of the dull brown jacket Niko originally wears. That's really the BIGGEST improvement I can see -- I guess because he's the main character, so I SEE it all the time.. or perhaps I'm just easily amused (I remember being SIMILARLY impressed when graphics had improved to a level where Super Mario had visible pockets sewn onto the back of his overall pants, in 16bit - LoL). Other than that, there seems to be a SLIGHT improvement to the smooth-ness of my frame-rate.. But not TOO much, considering that my computer is near the LOWER end of the recommended requirements, and I ALMOST have no business even RUNNING gta4 until I get a new graphics card with my income tax return money
Cheers! -

Realistic Water... lol
Man & Motorcycle fly from 50 feet above at 80+mph and dont even make a splash.
I never finished GTA4 started playing another game and never went back, may have to revisit it. Thing is now I have Burnout Paradise Ultimate Box and its like all the stuff I like in GTA4 with none of the stuff I do not like and since its all car based I can use my force feedback racing wheel instead of the controller. GTA4 obviously I have to use the controller since there is so much on foot. -

I am glad you identified what was causing your modded installation to crash although I never had any issues with american.gxt. I wonder what they changed in the modded version of that file and I am curious if you are missing out on the changes it made to the game, if any. I am also using the full 5GB of textures but I think you won't see all of those until you unlock other islands, I haven't unlocked any yet. Been too busy messing around with the Bodyguard Mod.
If you compare the roads of the original and the modded there is a big difference as well as with the cars and how the environment looks in general. I am assuming that you have a copy of your original and unmodded GTA IV in a separate directory right.
By the way, one of the things that has made the game so much more fun is the Relationship Mod (Gangwars Mod), this makes GTA IV what it should have been, more trouble making peds. As an example, without the Mod if you discharge a weapon maybe a policeman will be alerted and give chase but after this mod, in addition to the police, peds will also start coming after you, possibly firing weapons at you and at any police. Sometimes discharging one weapon starts of a gang war which is hilarious in game.
